My responsibilities for this project was a lot. I was the go to person to keep our section of the project going. I completed the Daily Work Journal and the Daily Organization Chart for every checkpoint. I also made sure we were caught up with our assignments and completing the aquaponics system for the fish. Filling the tank, picking out the right fish and making sure everyone has something to do was mostly what I did the time. Of course I had help, but I was mostly directing the team to get the work done.

Water and Fish

Aquaponics System

My responsibility was to design a poster that explains the Nitrogen Cycle of Aquaponics, specifically how fish poop helps feed plants without harming the fish at the same time. It starts off with fish eating food and then excreting waste (aka poop). In the process that waste is eaten by nitrosomonas and excreted into nitrites. Next, nitrobacter eats the nitrite and excretes it into nitrate. Then, plants eat the nitrates and any leftovers are eaten by dokdonela and thermomonas. Finally, dokdonela and thermomonas excretes the leftovers into nitrogen gas (aka water bubbles), which float out of the water's surface.

What I did for my project was present the current issue dealing with HIV into peoples lives and how we should continue to stay safe from this. Not all people look at their health all the time and I want to make sure that people have a public awareness on their intentions and how it might affect people. I did a lot of things like ask around a hospital for patients who have it and what it  did to them. I learned that people take public safety lightly and don't realize their surroundings like having intimate relations with some who contains a STD. I was going to bring in condoms for everyone who doesn't have it or cant get to one. Another thing I learned was that I must show others that keeping your own health in check benefits you and the others around you. Showing others you care for your health let’s them know that you are aware about your health and you are doing your best to keep it good. People like this show others it can change someone’s life, and people around the persons live’s.

LGBTQ Self Love Course

For my capstone I wanted to create a course that the teachers would be able to use. A way to get the students comfortable with the topic and be able to speak about these types of things. So I created a lesson plan for them that's simple but should work when talking about this with their advisory class.

Hair Discrimination

Overall, this capstone was very successful. This topic wasn't our first option. At first we just had an idea of giving back by doing a food bank. We later on found out their was many issues with that idea. We found an idea that both interest us, which is hair discrimination. This topic isn't something that people find as important but it is a small problem that people are experiencing in our communities. I am happy with the final project. One thing I wish we would've did differently was find more examples in social media.

For our project we decided to take a polaroid picture of every senior in the class of 2019. We did this to show the experiences of every student in the class. To do this we asked every senior a question to put under their picture. We asked if they coud describe their high school experience in one word. We also made a slideshow presentation and we will hang up the display in our school to leave a lasting effect on our school.

For my capstone my group and I ( Jeremy, Sergio, Naji, and Khayri built a go-kart. I joined my friends, in the projects because I always wondered about behind the scenes how things work and how things are built. And I thought this would be a great way to find out. We set up shop at SLA Center City. Before we starting building we needed to construct an outline sketch of the go-kart and figure out what person would be building what part of the go-kart. Once we decided on those things, we drew out how we would build it, we drew and wrote down everything before we starting grabbing any tools. Once we felt that we were ready, we let Mr. Lawrence know and we began ordering supplies. It was a little challenge working around everyone’s schedule and taking our time to make sure everything was going to work properly.

I did my capstone with three other members and Elijah Banks, Brian Bess, and Kashawn Gilmore. We decided to host a basketball tournament for the younger grades in order to teach them about the importance of sportsmanship, Collaboration, and communication because they will need these skills for the rest of their time in SLA and in the real world.  Our plan was to coach the 9th, 10th, and 11th graders that are interested in basketball to improve their learning and collaboration skills. Our Inquiry questions were, What made us want to have a basketball tournament?, How will the kids participating benefit from this tournament?, and what will we gain from this tournament? Throughout this whole process I learned that you can teach life lessons through activities that people enjoy and it can positively impact their lives.

For my capstone, I paired up with Mekhya Johnson and we donated clothes and shoes to the covenant house. The covenant house is a center that houses homeless teenagers. We decided to do this because we wanted to help those who can't help themselves. Throughout the process, we faced some difficulties. In the beginning, it was difficult for some people to donate so we started to reach out to outside sources such as our family members and the people in our community. For the final product, we received 12 pairs of gently worn shoe and 78 particles of clothing. Throughout this project, I learned a lot about the difficulties behind being a teenager. I thought my life was hard but there are teenagers out there with no support system at all and no one to run to when they are in trouble. School could be the least of their troubles. They are neglected by their parents and forced to raise themselves. They are pregnant and alone with no source of income or help. They are stuck in the streets with no way out. They are homeless and depressed. I met with some of these teenagers and talked with them and it made me appreciate what I have at home and all the things I am able to do. It made me want to give much more than clothes and shoes.

For my senior capstone, my friend and I decided to create a collection of poems for young girls. We would have our poems divided into different sections for each stage a heartbroken young girl goes through. We decided to do this because people don't recognize what a lot of young girls go through and they normally end up dealing with everything alone. 11th grade year was when we decided on this idea when it was mentioned by a friend. The process was simple, and the fact that I was actually going through things when I wrote most of these poems helped a lot. What I learned is that most of out experiences are they same so we shouldn't feel uncomfortable talking to each other so that we are not alone. The product turned out great. We created a website to showcase what we accomplished.

My Capstone xoxo

For my capstone, my good friend Haajirah and I decided we would write a bunch of poetry for young girls who are going through things. It was decided 11th grade year while we were talking to a friend. It has sections for each stage girls go through when they are heartbroken. While I was at my lowest, I was hardly able to talk to anyone. Nobody knew how I actually felt because I’m not that good at expressing myself verbally. Instead I started writing poetry, putting all of my feelings in writing. Being as though I was immensely satisfied with the turn out of that, I would encourage other teenage girls who are going through things to also write poetry. Without poetry I was unable to focus on schoolwork and other important things. This caused my grades to slip and nobody deserves to go through what went through. This process has been amazing for me, just knowing that in the end I would contribute to the flourishing of many young girls.

The final of my capstone is a photo album with designs created by Imani and I along with some of the students from SLA that has a unique style of clothing. The main goal of my capstone was to create clothing to express the history of my culture and to embrace myself on who I am and where I am from through the clothes.  I wanted to make sure that all of the designs had a meaning behind it and was all unique in their own way. Starting of it was very difficult to know what needed to happen in order to get my designs created. Some materials work on certain fabrics and others don’t. I searched online for multiple tips that people suggested I do to make sure everything comes out the right way. I tried a couple of things out and they ended up coming out the wrong way. I realized that I was running out of time so I kept in contact with someone from a professional designing store to make everything happen. We talked about all kinds of fabrics, colors, and styles of the shirt not long after I received my shirts and automatically started with my photoshoot. Overall I am happy with this whole experience. I went through a lot trying to get this capstone done and I am happy with the way it came out. I put a lot of time and money into all of the designs and they came out the way I wanted them to. If i were to change things I maybe would have design to go a different route with how these designs got done.

For my capstone my partner Jhalil Allen and I thought that we should host a sports ceremony for the student athletes here at SLA Beeber. The reason why we chose to do a sports ceremony is because we wanted to have all the athletes be recognized for their hard work and dedication because both me and Jhalil are both athletes and we know how it feels when the hard work and dedication that you put in all year isn't recognized. In our process we had to do a lot of planning ahead so that the ceremony could go smoothly without any mishaps. We had to make our own flyers for the event which we posted up around the school and posted it on our social media accounts, we had to check with Ms. Aziz to see if the auditorium was available for us to use for 30 minutes and then we had to talk to multiple coaches and players in each respected sport so that we could figure out what student athlete deserves what certificate we were giving out (MVP, Most Improved and Most Team Spirit). In the end we had an 'okay' turnout there wasn't as many student athletes there as we would like but some still showed up and that's all that matters. During this process we learned organization skills and also how to promote and create events.
