Hello reader!

For my Capstone, I created a number system for organization that will be implemented when using new tripods for projects, whether they are a class or personal use within school. With this system, said lost tripods will be found with much more ease. Each tripod and its corresponding microphone have been labeled with a number 1-8. There is also a notebook where students must sign out each tripod they are using with their name and email address. I was also able and privileged enough to collect multiple pieces of student art that have been displayed in the halls of SLA Beeber. Art is important in schools because creativity helps us learn, and school buildings can be bleak, however, SLA Beeber is not. There is art in almost every hallway, but I felt as though it needed more that was created by students who want their art to be displayed. Art is a way of expression and a way to be heard. Being able to express yourself through more than words creates a healthy environment for learning. During these stressful times of sickness, corruption, and a betrayal of human rights, art is a way to bring us together and make us stronger as a community. Thank you to everyone who contributed to my project, and a special thanks to Zoe Strauss for allowing me to be a part of her space for two years, Mr. Rosen-Long for helping my project move forward, and of course, Mr. Lawrence for seeing me for who I am, and always encouraging me to continue down the path I am on!

The mini course, Bask In Your Beauty (BIYB), targeted girls in grades 7-9, aiming to impart knowledge about self-love, positivity, and personal growth. Throughout the course, the journey was not always easy, but the girls were consistently engaged in enjoyable and valuable activities that encouraged interaction and sisterhood. The experience provided profound insights into the diverse experiences faced by each girl, which broadened my perspective. Understanding the unique struggles and triumphs of these young girls highlighted the importance of empathy. Furthermore, the course led to a profound personal transformation, allowing me to learn more about leadership skills and a deep passion for helping others. By guiding and empowering the girls through self-discovery, I discovered my own potential for leadership and witnessed the transformative power of instilling self-love and positivity in others. The BIYB mini course emerged as a testament to the significance of encouraging a safe space for young girls to explore their inner strengths, embrace diversity, and develop a foundation of self-acceptance that will shape their future endeavors.

Together with Saif and Brandon, we executed a Capstone Project to establish a music production program tailored for high school students. This project was designed to equip the students with the necessary skills to either venture into music industry careers or broaden their musical interests. Our initial plan to teach music theory was recalibrated as we found our participants were already versed in it. Thus, we moved directly to practical applications on a Digital Audio Workstation, FL Studio. The curriculum also exposed the students to various music genres through special sessions with guest producers. In the face of challenges like equipment breakdowns and time constraints, our team maintained steady progress through effective communication and adaptable scheduling. As the Capstone Project draws to a close, we’ve recorded a song and are presently filming a video for its presentation. This experience has bestowed us with invaluable competencies such as project management, efficient communication, and problem-solving. The project’s successful realization, in spite of significant plan alterations, demonstrates our team’s adaptability and the potential for continued growth in music production.

My senior capstone was a series of interviews asking students about school and how they feel about school. Coming into my first few months of school I had no idea what I wanted to do for capstone. To be quite honest I didn’t want to do the project at all, but I did want to graduate. Now originally I wanted to do a podcast but that ultimately failed so I decided to make an informational video that teachers and staff of our school could use in order to improve on making Science Leadership Academy Beeber a better learning environment. The process was sort of a struggle. There was a big change of plan. Like I said before I initially wanted to do a podcast but people had their own assignment and couldn’t all get together. So I then changed it to a series of interviews that can have as many people as I want in there. I think everything has room for improvement but I did the best I could for this project and I am proud of it.

For my Senior Capstone, I had the biggest opportunity to travel out of the country and attend a Missionary Trip with my grandfather. The missionary trip was a 7-day adventure in Tortola British Islands where we were able to spread joy across the community. My task on the trip was to work with the younger kids since I’m a teenager. I was able to set up 2 classes where I was able to help and learn about the children of Tortola. My first class was an all-girls event where we were able to set together and create vision boards. This allowed us to get to know each other more and discuss our possible futures. In the second class, I was able to set up an art class during church service. I worked with younger kids, talking and painting the things we enjoyed. After my classes, we were able to provide the kids with many art supplies that they could use in the future. Experiencing this trip allowed me to realize how fortunate I am but also how much I enjoy working with kids. It was a blessing exploring different communities and getting to know different cultures.

For my Senior Capstone, I created a film about SLA. I always had an interest in film, but never truly had a chance to create a film of my choice. My goal was to create something for others not part of the SLA community to view and gain a better understanding of SLA Beeber. I began collecting small clips and videos for my film. Throughout my time filming, I also conducted research on how to use my iPhone to create a film and how to film creative shots for my movie. I conducted interviews and asked questions to get the full experience of someone part of the SLA community. I then began to edit and piece together a layout for my movie. I tried my best to use motion and music to relate to each other. I shared a portion of my video at New Family Night and everyone loved it. I am most proud of this because I worked very hard and ultimately my goal was to share with families and students interested in SLA. I hope to continue to share this video with new families in the future. I loved seeing everything come together. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Just like everyone else in my senior class, our high school years were cut short. I came into SLA at beeber with the world at my feet, excited to see what high school had in store for me. When a senior capstone project was brought to my attention, my immediate thought was a yearbook. How can the core values be incorporated into the SLA Beeber 2023 Senior Yearbook to remain for the generations to follow? The yearbook required a large amount of collaboration from start to finish. We needed to brainstorm ideas, edit, communicate, and research in order for this project to be successful. We started off with finalizing a theme, after that, all our input really came from the senior class as a whole. We would run to each advisory and present our ideas or concerns and receive their feedback. Being able to work on this yearbook in my free time taught me about time management skills and creativity. I worked on the formatting, uploaded the pictures our senior class wanted to incorporate into the yearbook, and helped with the design. This project is beneficial to my community because it allows the senior class to leave with memories and positive notes on their high school experience. I would say my senior capstone project was a success because not only did I complete it in a timely manner, but it’s also something that the senior class can keep with them as they go onto the next chapter in their lives.

The reason I chose the title “voicing” for my capstone is that, to me, it means to be heard, and I believe that students in this generation need to be heard. For this effort, I canvassed the neighborhood to assist as many children as I could in feeling more cherished and at ease around people they believe they can trust. For this initiative, I visited libraries, schools, and YMCAs to interact with children and assist them with projects or assignments they were working on or simply to spend time with them if they were feeling lonely. I became friends with youngsters I hardly knew because of this project. Because many children in this generation either had both parents absent or had just one, it taught me that being vulnerable and paying close attention to children will make them feel more at ease. Having parents is important because they will help you get through difficult times that you might not be able to handle on your own. In order to make them feel comfortable and to support them, my goal was to assist children who might not feel as at ease talking to their parents or who might not have anyone to talk to. I did this by offering them advice on personal matters as well as on life, school, and activities outside of the classroom.

While my original plan for my Capstone was to work with English and Reading-challenged students to help them better understand and comprehend what they’re reading, the actual practice rapidly diverged from that plan. While the core of the project remained, that is helping students comprehend their work, what work I assisted them with broadened into anything they needed help with. At school I helped them keep on task, reminding them they have work to do and even assisting with some work, and after school, I’d tutor one of the students in math over a Zoom call. I’m particularly proud of the tutoring sessions because it wasn’t even my idea, it was kind of sprung on me and I adapted to it, even coming to enjoy it somewhat. I feel that my work benefited the community of Science Leadership Academy at Beeber, which is both the students and faculty. The students benefited by receiving assistance with their work and staying on task, as well as the enrichment of their experience. The faculty benefited because by assisting the students myself, I freed up some of the workloads from the teachers because they don’t get paid enough to deal with us, so any help is probably appreciated.

Torres Aamiyah, Capstone.

In this paper I was most proud of myself for actually sticking to it. No matter how many times I wanted to give up and just stop working on it all together I didn’t. I pushed myself to do good ! I pushed myself to do better if I wanted to really graduate. I know what I had to do to get it done. This paper was definitely a process especially because I was doing it on my own and it was like taking on a lot. While this would have been way fun with a partner I am so happy that I got to do this. What I learned about myself is that I could really master a lot of things. Working alone, I get distracted easily. I learned that I can really procrastinate but still get it done at the last minute. What I also learned about myself is that I care about other people and I care about my community enough to really do a project on this and really come together with this. I am very interested in keeping kids safe ! While I want to keep everyone safe In the real world only kids under 18 are dying towards violence. My project Benefits the communities in so many different ways such as raising awareness. Discussing gun violence can raise awareness of the problem and its impact on individuals, families, and communities. It can help people understand the scope of the problem and the need for action. Encouraging action. Discussions about gun violence can encourage people to take action to prevent it. This might involve advocating for policy changes, supporting community programs that address the root causes of violence, or simply being more vigilant and aware of their surroundings. Building community. Talking about gun violence can help build community and foster connections between people who share a common goal of reducing violence. It can provide a forum for people to share their experiences, ideas, and concerns. Empowering individuals. Discussing gun violence can empower individuals to take action to protect themselves and their loved ones. It can provide information on how to recognize and respond to potentially dangerous situations, and can encourage people to seek out resources and support. Fostering dialogue. Talking about gun violence can foster dialogue and understanding between people who hold different views on the issue. It can provide an opportunity for people to listen to and learn from each other, and to work towards common solutions. Overall, discussing gun violence can help raise awareness, encourage action, build community, empower individuals, and foster dialogue. It is an important step towards reducing violence and creating safer communities.

This Proposal paper is about Gun Violence. Why ? Because I feel as though this isn’t talked about enough. Well it is talked about A LOT but nothing ever changes. I feel like this is a topic that needs to be talked about, especially when younger kids are involved. What makes it worthwhile to me is not seeing any kids get hurt and making this madness end. I want to be a nurse. My reason for this is to help people when they are hurt because of people who want to shoot people or hurt them so badly. I will get to the bottom of my Tipic. As I research and get information on this Topic I will understand why our city is so violent. I want people to understand where this rage comes from and I want it to stop. I want people to put an end to the Violence and the rage. Because taking a life is so sad. Watching people’s families suffer as they bury their kids YOUNG BABIES. I personally picked this topic because I feel as though Talking about violence will benefit our community in so many ways. It will help us understand each other, Keep others safe. We can talk about it and talk about what we want to change. Though some people will not agree because of situations that they feel as though they need to get people back for hurting their loved one. This could benefit our community in so many ways. I might face some bad challenges with seeing this topic through. But I know that there are people who really want to stop violence so I know that I will also face some good challenges and I know that I will have a lot of support during this project. I can talk to people who have already been through this kind of stuff, Research people who have been through this. Get answers and etc. I feel as though I will get somewhere with this, I might not get far but I know people will hear me and I know I will be heard. My question is: Why can’t everyone stop killing ? The end goal for this project is to get to the bottom of why can’t people put an end to gun violence or any kind of violence and make peace with each other. I am interested in this project because, to me, I feel as though it is an important topic to bring to people’s attention. I just feel as though Gun related violence threatens our most fundamental human right, the right to life. Gun violence is a daily tragedy affecting the lives of individuals around the world. More than 500 people die every day because of violence committed with firearms. This should never be okay and that’s why I’m interested in this project to talk about this more. It will serve a community by talking about the problem and having people come together to really get it together and change the world. Nobody wants to die because people wanna be trigger happy, or because people wanna kill and then if they can’t find the main person they kill their friends or family. Nobody wants to lose their loved one’s for another’s doing and the community needs to talk about it honestly. They need to hear about those things. Because most babies die due to the fact that they are caught at the wrong place at the wrong time. Philadelphia is so dirty, They are so careless and inconsiderate. During this Paper my timeline will be pretty simple. I stated my topic now. I will start my research and start talking to people about this topic etc. After all of my research and information is in I will start putting it in and recording the information I gathered and putting it into a doc. After I am done all of that I’ll answer my own question letting people know why this stuff happens. Following all of this I will present my project and give people this information I came up with. I have so many family members that have said situations where they felt as though “ they got one of mine so I have to get one of theirs”. I did an interview with 2 of my uncles! Like a podcast. And this is how it went. Aamiyah: What do you think the reason for gun violence is ? Uncle R: The reason for gun violence is someone takes a person’s life for anything like money, a job, drugs etc. When they take that person’s life then the family of that person or friends is gonna take the life of that person. For example king von if you listen to his songs “Wayne’s story” He talks about how wayne tried to rob someone because he was broke and the other person was rich. Wayne didn’t kill the man so the man started looking for wayne. Wayne was hiding out so they couldn’t find him. The man that Wayne tried to rob found Wayne’s cousin and he murdered him. He murdered him to send him a message that he was not playing around. Wayne found out his cousin was dead and started killing the other boy’s family. The cycle became a whole thing and they started killing each other’s family until one of them was dead. And even after they die, their friends/family will still find people who are around them and kill them. Uncle K: Most violence starts because people who are caught at the wrong place and the wrong time. While I have known this I just want to know how we can put an end to all of this. Sometimes Conventionally, violence is understood to be often driven by negative emotions, such as anger or fear. For example, a person might become aggressive because they were enraged at another person, or they were afraid the other person might hurt them. Also History of violent victimization. Attention deficits, hyperactivity, or learning disorders. History of early aggressive behavior. Involvement with drugs, alcohol, or tobacco. Low IQ. Poor behavioral control. Deficits in social cognitive or information-processing abilities. High emotional distress. I feel as though there needs to be a change in the law such as reducing firearm access to youth and individuals who are at risk of harming themselves or others. Hold the gun industry accountable and ensure there is adequate oversight over the marketing and sales of guns and ammunition. Engage responsible gun dealers and owners in solutions. Time and again, we are heartbroken by the news of another mass shooting. Part of our healing must be the conviction that we will do everything in our power to keep these tragedies from happening in a nation that continues to face a pandemic of gun violence. It’s not only the high-profile mass shootings that we must work to prevent, but also the daily deaths by guns that claim more than 30,000 lives every year. I want to go from neighborhood to neighborhood to find out why people are so careless and what we can do to change it. I know that there will never really be a solution. There are several reasons why it is important to talk about gun violence. Public safety for one Gun violence is a major public safety issue in many countries, including the United States. Discussing gun violence can help raise awareness of the problem and identify ways to reduce the risk of gun related injuries and deaths. Next we have Human impact. Gun violence can have a devastating impact on individuals and communities. It can result in physical injuries, psychological trauma, and loss of life. Talking about gun violence can help raise awareness of the human cost of gun violence and promote empathy and understanding. Policy change. Talking about gun violence can help inform policy change at the local, state, and national levels. It can help identify areas where policy changes are needed, and encourage lawmakers to take action. Prevention: Talking about gun violence can help identify ways to prevent it from occurring in the first place. This might involve promoting education and awareness about gun safety, identifying and addressing the root causes of violence, and providing support and resources to individuals and communities. Community building is a good one because Talking about gun violence can help build community and foster connections between people who share a common goal of reducing violence. It can provide a forum for people to share their experiences, ideas, and concerns, and work together towards a common goal. Overall, talking about gun violence is important because it can help promote public safety, raise awareness of the human impact of gun violence, inform policy change, prevent violence, and build community. It is an important step towards creating safer, more peaceful communities. but we need to keep our families safe.

Alexandria Thompson Capstone

For my capstone project, I chose to take on the challenge of creating the school’s play from scratch. I took part in writing the script, designing costumes, and even helping in directing. This experience taught me the invaluable skills of collaboration and creativity. One of my favorite parts of this project was having the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse group of individuals. Each person brought their own unique skills and perspectives to the table, and together we created a cohesive team that fueled the creative process. In addition to writing the play, I took on the role of designing costumes. From finding inspiration to choosing materials, and sewing, this aspect of the project pushed me to think outside the box. By the end of the project, everyone I worked with could try new things and find new hobbies that they enjoyed. Whether it be acting, dancing, or being a part of a crew they tried a new skill. My senior capstone project experience was an unforgettable journey of collaboration and creativity. The process taught me the power of working with others to bring a vision to life.

For my Capstone project, titled “Self-Expression: Embedding Healthy Habits at a Young Age,” I developed a mini-course aimed at fostering healthy habits of self-expression in lower school children. Through interactive activities such as journaling, coloring, and vision boards, I provided students with outlets to express their emotions and learn effective communication skills. Drawing on research highlighting the negative consequences of inadequate self-expression resources for children, I aimed to address this issue and promote emotional intelligence and self-awareness. By incorporating techniques like color psychology and daily reading check-ins, I sought to equip children with the tools to identify and manage their emotions. Throughout the project, I discovered the value of teaching children healthy expression habits and the positive impact of activities like dancing, dream boards, and journaling. Following a lesson plan that included journaling, analyzing inspirational quotes, and engaging in creative activities like painting, I witnessed positive reactions from the students and fostered an environment where they felt heard and understood. By providing students with options and opportunities for collaboration, I enhanced their engagement and sense of control over their education. The project highlighted the importance of teaching healthy self-expression habits to children, laying the foundation for their personal and social development while preparing them for a brighter future.

Food Insecurities.

I chose this topic because of the Food Insecurities. Food Insecurities is a real thing and it’s effecting people all over the world. I decided to talk about WHY we are having these problems WHAT we can do to get rid of them and HOW we are going to change that or how we CAN change that as a whole. What I did well was really put this together. Research the problems and put all of the pieces together on how we could make it better and what we should do to make it better. What I could have done differently was come about the information way more clearly and added way more to what I had. The most meaningful thing was knowing I could help people and knowing that we could make a change to this whole thing.

Excessive heat - Gavin

I chose this topic because it was an issue I had to face at one point in my life because the heat at my mom was acting up so it was really hot in the house. I think I did a great job at acting however I should’ve tried to make it more of a PSA not a short film. the most meaningful part of this was the research because it gave me a deeper understanding of the issue itself.

Managing Your Waste PSA by Amadou Dia

I choose this topic because I believe it is significant and under-discussed today. I believe I did a good job of producing the video, though I do believe I could have found more useful articles for my research and completed it more quickly. The fact that I learned more about waste management and my partnership with my partner while making this PSA was the most meaningful aspect for me.

Joseph Watson- Excessive heat

My topic is on excessive heat issues inside homes in the summer time . I really enjoyed being able to act out in this video and learning more about excessive heat in homes. My group was really good with coming up with great ideas as we went along and making quick decisions. One thing I feel like we could’ve done better is time management with this project.

Air Pollution

We produced a film on how air pollution can harm you and what causes it. Additionally, we discussed how to reduce air pollution. Because of the negative consequences of air pollution and because we want our community and family members to be as safe as possible, we believe it is crucial for individuals in the community to understand what they can do to prevent it.

I believe we did a good job of planning the video, but the timing of when we recorded it prevented it from being as good. Despite this, I believe we did a good job of getting the job done. Although I believe we should have really planned out what we were going to do, I still believe we did a very good job overall.

The film, which I believe illustrates what people should know about air pollution, what it is, how to prevent it, and what causes it, is the PSA’s most meaningful component, in my opinion. because I believe it is crucial for everyone to understand that.

Water Pollution PSA

Provide a summary of the contents of your video and a rationale for why YOU chose this topic, in paragraph form. - In this video, you will learn about water pollution, its causes, solutions, and how you can help. This video also shows people in the community who make a change to actively and positively affect water pollution. I chose this topic because, after the most recent chemical spill in Philadelphia, I felt it was important to inform people about the water they drink.

What did you do well and what could you have done differently? - Something I did well was editing the video and providing as much information as I could in the video. I think that I could have filmed more visuals because there are more images than I expected to be in the video.

What was the most meaningful part of the experience of creating the PSA? - The most meaningful part of the experience was doing the research and the impact that the shared information will later have on people.

Managing Your Waste PSA by Alana Baggett

This Video about Waste Management includes content about littering, dumping, and how trash affects the environment in Philadelphia. We zoom in on the amount of trash that is affecting and has been affecting the Philadelphia and Chester areas. Included in this PSA are videos about the issues it’s caused residents and how people have tried to fix the issue and what to look forward to reduce the issue. I chose this topic because I live in North Philadelphia. Usually, when people hear North Philly, they think of or see trash, which is sad. I see with my own eyes how trash is affecting our city.

I think there could have been more inclusion about what people do to hurt our environment, such as more insight into littering and dumping. I think our video includes multiple perspectives on the issue.

The most meaningful part of this project was seeing that there are actually people trying to do something about the issue. I feel like you don’t actually see what’s going on with topics in our community until you look further into it and I enjoyed seeing how many people are involved.

Excessive heat in houses

My topic focuses on excessive heat issues in houses during the summer. What causes the heat, and different ways of avoiding it. I enjoyed being able to use an example from a real experience that happened to me when I was younger because of the heat. My group was great with coming up with ideas on the spot without really creating a script, so recording wasn’t too difficult in that aspect. I just wish it didn’t take us as long as it did to find a location to film.

Asbestos PSA!

Our video focused on the presence of asbestos in various Philadelphia schools and how it has affected the students in these schools both mentally and socially. We chose this topic because this is an issue that has affected us directly and altered our high school experience. I personally regret not being able to enjoy physical gym classes in our gym due to the asbestos and am concerned for all the schools that have been temporarily closed at one point or another because of it. I believe we did well at showing how asbestos has affected the SLA community. I believe the execution of the video could have been done better. The most meaningful part of creating this PSA was learning how this issue can be combated and prevented. Also seeing how we as a school were able to overcome this obstacle and continue on.
