This tower gardening experience was interesting to me before because this is the first time I was not gardening out in the middle of some got sun digging holes up in the soil and getting my clothes and shows dirty. It was cool to realize you can garden without being in a garden.
Growing for me wasn't that much of an issue because my plant was able to sprout and grow strong without any problems. In unit one we went over our individual ecological footprint and realizing how many earths we all take up to fulfill our everyday activities. In unit two we focused a lot on environmental justice, and also the uses of land and water in Philadelphia. This plays a roll when it comes to gardening in Philadelphia. The thing is that with these tower gardens you can garden anywhere even if that is right in a class room. I learned a lot and It is interesting to see my cucumber plant grow.

Reflection
-----------
Unit 1: In this unit, I have learned about natural systems and how they are sustained throughout the world. Along the way, I developed a better sense of how different systems bounce off of each other and require different inputs of energy to maintain consistency and health in all systems involved. Specifically, this is in Earth Systems and how each system affects each other and requires the assistance of one another to thrive, like how the biosphere needs the hydrosphere as a source of energy and how the geosphere needs the hydrosphere to stay strong and sustainable for all organisms in the biosphere. Over vast periods of time, these spheres work together to improve upon each other but have diminshed from human inputs.

Unit 2: In this unit, I gained a clear view of what environmental justice is, and how it is centered around defending the environment because of how it affects us in the short/long run and all animals involved. It is about how one group's carelessness in one part of the world will immediately affect another group all the way across the world and will eventually strike them even harder. Humans in particular have a knack of using resources carelessly and refusing to put up efforts to restore such resources. In doing this, many areas across the globe become less sustainable and lose the proper nutrients needed to sustain life there. Ultimately, systems change over time because of the human inputs that affect them and how the each sphere interacts them in response, and finally how each sphere is, once again, diminished and destroyed.

In Environmental Science, as students/explorers, we were encouraged to find our own answers as to why things are the way that they are, and think critically about the conclusions we draw from research.

The course began with us discussing Earth Systems, and Resources. We wanted to not only identify ways that we as humans alter our environment, but try to be more aware of the ecological footprint we leave on this Earth. We talked about how we can make the Earth more sustainable, which still doesn't have a clear and concise answer. We continued the discussion with the topic of environmental justice, and what it means to be environmentally just.

To end the semester, we ended the class by doing a lab which related back to how we can alter the environment by certain factors, and how we can make the Earth more sustainable. The lab consisted of planting our own seeds, taking care of them, and monitoring them on a daily basis, to see if there were certain factors that prevented them from growing as quickly, or factors that enabled them to grow quickly.

The way that we were going to do our garden was in the style of a "Tower Garden". Now, I can be one hundred percent honest and say that before this class, I had never even heard of the term "Tower Garden"; nor seen one or knew how it worked. I can admit that I was ignorant to the world of gardening, but it was only because it never interested me. Tower Gardens, according to their official website are defined as "vertical aeroponic growing systems which allow the gardener to grow up to 20 vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers indoors or outdoors." The topic of being able to grow plants, still didn't interest me, but since it was for a grade, I had to do it.

My group, which consisted of Samir Smith, Mark Palmer, Savion Cummings, and myself decided that we would plant sweet basil, cherry tomatoes, peppers, and gourmet lettuce. I didn't want to get my hands too dirty, I decided that I would be the organizer of the group, and keep track of the observations, and organize all of the documents.

As you look at the photos from our photo journal, you will see that our plants didn't grow as much as we wanted them to, but it could just be because we either watered them too much, or we didn't water them enough. It also could have been because we planted our seeds at a later date, so we were behind (because of the class schedule). Based on these observations, I do believe that if everyone planted their seeds on the same day, we would all have similar results, or if we all followed the same routine of watering our plants. However, one additional observation that I made was that we could have damaged our soil, or our seeds prior to planting, so that could have had a major impact on the growth.

As I reflect on this project, one thing that I think I could improve upon was keeping track of the temperature inside of the building during the time we were in class, as well as the temperature outside, and took a ruler to measure the growth of the plants. I do think that this was a fun project to do, and I do believe that tower gardens are a more sustainable way of living because the plants aren't altered in anyway, they're one hundred percent organic, and full of pesticides.

I hope that you enjoy the photo journal below, and hope that you get some type of motivation to go start your own!

Tower Gardening

The Tower Gardening project was a fun and cool experience for me. I enojyed having my own plants to grow, and the whole process of basically gardening was fun. I did not know anything about Tower Gardening before doing this project, so it was interesting to learn about it.

The gardening was a little bit of a tedious process. It took some time for our plants to begin to grow which was a little frustrating. One observation that I personally made was that out of all the plants, the lettuce was the fastest to grow. It seemed like everyone had their own little shrubs of lettuce. Another observation that I made was that the peppers take the longest to grow. It was frustrating for my group because our three other plants were growing except for the peppers. We began to question ourselves if we made a mistake or had done something wrong while planting the seeds. But when we began to look at other groups' peppers, theirs were not growing either. Just today we finally began to see a little green sprouting.

After doing this project, I feel like I have learned more about the environment. I learned how tower gardening can have a positive impact on our environment and is a good way to make a difference in our community by tower gardening. It's not hard at all, and it makes me want to tower garden myself.

I had a great time planting, it was easy because I have a green thumb. But seeing your plants growing everyday and having all your hard work and focus pay off is amazing. Each day I take a picture and observations of the plants and it's great to see each day how my plants have grown. I am glad that I was given this in a class where we want a more environmental Just world.

THE FACTORS THAT AFFECTED MY GARDEN WAS THE ENVIRONMENT, WATER SUPPLY AND SUNLIGHT. THE CONCLUSIONS I CAN DRAW BASED ON MY OBSERVATION IS THAT DIFFERENT SEEDS GROW AT DIFFERENT NO MATTER HOW CONSISTENT THE SUPPLY OF RESOURCES ARE. THIS TOWER GARDEN SHOWED ME THAT PLANTS CAN GROW AT A VERY FAST PACE WHICH I NEVER KNEW. THIS COURSE HAS GIVEN ME A BETTER OUTLOOK ON THE ENVIRONMENT ITSELF AND HAS HELPED ME SEE THAT THERE IS MORE THAN ONE WAY TO DO THINGS AND THERE'S BARELY A WRONG WAY TO DO THINGS.

Working on the Tower Gardens was a very interesting experience. Before Ms. Aziz's class I didn't even know what a Tower Garden was. I was responsible for growing the peppers in my groups tower garden. The process was very long, but there is currently a sprout appearing.

During the process of growing my peppers in the Tower Garden, I was able to learn about what factors affect the growth of a plant. Sunlight was a big factor for our tower garden. Our sprouts were required to be under artificial light.

Based on my observations, I can conclude that peppers take a long time to grow. My plant was the last to sprout out of all my group. The reason I predicted for this is that these pepper may need to grow for a longer period of time in order to develop the flavor inside of them.

In conclusion, the Tower Garden was an interesting experience. It also helped me step out of my comfort zone being that this is the first time that I have been responsible for growing my own plant.

While working on this project I didn't know what to expect. I had no clue how to garden, or even the many methods of gardening there are I thought it would be simple. But planting, and caring for a seed requires a lot of work more than I expected. Planting the seeds probably had to be the funniest part of this project. Even though  My seed hasn't shown no signs of life yet, but hopefully  it will grow soon.  My group mates, and classmates their plants have sprouted all over the place. So I think it's cool that not everybody is planting the same seeds, and that there is some variety. I can't wait to see the plants when they've grown even more. I think the tower garden itself is pretty cool too, because this is something we came together as a class to do that will not only affect us but our community, and environment as well. I hope we can continue this project, and expand even more why stop here. This is how we affect our environment in a positive way. Fresh vegetables, and foods  can lead to a  happy healthier life, and stop the issue of food insecurity. This helps me understand the actions we can take to make the world a better place, the earth is

Rockwall Plants:

Marketmore Cucumbers

Peppers

Cherry Tomatoes

Sweet Basil

Day one

In the beginning stages of planting we had a lot of problem with our seeds growing because other plant’s started to sprout faster than ours.

Day two

I think that the sweet basil will sprout first. Which wasn’t the first to sprout, the first was tomato then the basil.

I also think that if we didn't have much vermiculite on top of the seed the would have grew faster.

Day three

The plants the tomatoes were beginning to sprout. I can also predict that the basil will be the next to sprout because the seed was starting to sprout.

Day four

The only two which have started growing is the tomatos and the basil which are continuing to grow. Also still no growth with other two plants.

Day 5

We have not yet transferred any of our plants to the tower garden yet because the basil and tomatoes were not big enough

Day 6

Our basil is starting to sprout up more as well as the tomato plant.

Conclusion

Seeds, water and light and following directions was has an affect on planting, they all have a major role on the effect of plants. The conclusions that I have based on my observations is that plant grows do not grow at the same exact time or pace.

At the start of this project I kind of had an idea of how things were going to since i have done gardening things with my grandmother many of times. I was happy that we were doing a project I already had prior knowledge too. That way I could be of better help with my group.
During this project many of my group members doubted my plant and how much it was going to grow. I had lettuce and although it didn't grow as large as other plants, it grew larger than my group and I predicted. So I was relieved in some ways and disappointed in others. I wish we had more time so that we could really see how large our plants would grow.
The best part of the project was probably the photo journal,it allowed us to keep track of everything, and it allowed us to really look at the new changes that was happening to our plants. Overall this was a very fun project , I actually got to see my work come to life

When it comes to gardening I have done it before, but never like this. It was always the traditional way with my mom. Tower gardening was a whole new experience for me. It was my first real time handling seeds, as my mom used to just transfer over plants with soil to our garden. So it was my first time having something I planted grow. The rock wool process is pretty easy to learn, as rock wool is just kind of a substitute for soil. The real difference in tower gardening was the difference of spheres. As traditional gardening uses the lithosphere as your planting in soil. With soil being out of the picture you instead plant in the air with the tower garden and rock wool. Your plant is mainly using the moisture from the atmosphere and the nutrients you gave it in the rock wool to support itself. Now after using tower gardens for the first time I have to say that they do have a form of Environmental Justice to them. First of all you don't have to worry about damaging soil since you're not using any. Second is that if you get one for a community or classroom everyone can use it. Lastly it doesn't release any carbon emissions and is eco-friendly. In the end tower gardening was a new experience for me and it gave me a new perspective on doing something that you already thought you knew how to do.

This project was very interesting. Knowing that a lot of areas in Philadelphia and the world are food deserts and that they've become environmentally unjust due to pollution of the hydrosphere and the biosphere (soil in Bangladesh being too salty; BP oil spill that destroyed ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico), tower gardens can really help out these places. It's a sustainable way of making food, even though some plants might take longer than others to grow. I hope to continue to check on my plants.

This project was a learning experience on growing the non traditional way. Although my plant just started to grow after weeks it was still fun. This taught me that there is more than one way to do things. This has opened up new ways to help the environment get justice to not only the environment but to people who live in places where the weather is unpredictable. This course has made environmental science a fun learning experience in learning how to plant, different ways to get environmental justice, learning about different natural systems and resources around you. This course helped a lot.

For this assignment i didn't really know what to expect. i had never heard of a tower garden so i was a little confused when I came and saw what it was.  Originally i had thought that it was just when  the seeds were growing over on the rack with the light. So i was very supposed and intrigued when we moved them to the real tower gardens in the corner. I also thought that the tower garden were really cool and i had been wondering what they were for a while back there.
I was kind of sad that i wasnt there the day when we planted seeds so i couldn't observe my own plant myself. regardless of this although i am having fun observing my group members and seeing how their plants are growing. I never knew that seeds could sprout so fast so to say i am intrigued is in understatement.
I also think that tower gardens are very sustainable. It makes me wonder why people don't have them in their house. I feel like they would be great way to grow your own fresh and healthy food and help save money because you wouldn't be spending so much at the supermarket. It also makes me wonder is there anywhere  in philadelphia where they do practice using tower gardens.

Reflection
During our tower garden journey, we experience some ups and downs. For instance something that we noticed was that only the tomatoes and the lettuce seem to be the only plants making substantial progress. We also noticed that some of the plants were developing a reddish tone to some of our plants stems. I think another bump in the road was that we had trouble thinking of new things to observe because I think we weren't exactly sure how to truly observe. Everything just looked the same day after day. I think that we should have recorded new info once a week instead of everyday. It was great to see the plants grow from little seedlings to cool little plants. I think in retrospect, it might have been wise to not use artificial light, I think natural light would have helped the plants grow faster. I think all community centers, schools, and homeless shelters should grow food using tower gardens. This would really help in lower economic neighborhoods and create a more environmentally just world.  My conclusion is that the plants will continue to turn into fully grown veggies.

Photo Journal

Beginning this project I was under the impression that when it came to plants everything was smooth sailing. I’d never heard of tower gardening and essentially I was interested in how exactly people incorporated it into their everyday lifestyle. Tower Gardens are a powerful idea of growing food in the future. It was pretty cool to see just how short of an amount of time that was needed for plants to start growing. Surprisingly this was with little to no maintenance.

Over the course of the two weeks I was disappointed because my eggplant seemed as if it didn't have a single ounce of growth effort. Sustainability is being able to uphold long term ecological stability. Tower gardens would go a long way in the correlation between our ecological footprints as humans. We would be able to not only sustain ourselves but to cut down on the harmful acts that sometimes come from our choices.

The photo journal was a great way for me to keep track and identify the changes within our plants. My eggplant didn’t show much growth until I began to notice a difference on the last day, we were set to transition the plants. I had finally spotted a sprout!

My Reflection
In Environmental Science this semester we learned a lot about our environment. We learned how we as humans interact within it and how we contribute to it positively and negatively. Knowing what we do to our environment is extremely important because it functions off of how we live in it. In class this semester, we learned a lot about what is currently going on in our environment and what we can do to make it better.
My group and I did a pretty good job on keeping track of our garden. Although we did a good job on keeping it taken care of, the other plants around ours affect how ours grew. We didn't achieve much growth because other groups were around ours and maybe ruined the way ours grew. This is a prime example on how humans can affect the environment without realizing it.

Tower Gardens Photojournal

What factors affected your garden? What conclusions can you draw based on your observations?
The factor that affected my garden is that the less of an sun or too much of an water on two of my plant that are not grow any sign of roots or anything or it could be bad seed that we planted. The conclusions that I can inference in that When I was researching about tower garden, I noticed that they said growing in a medium rock-wool, which could provides plants with oxygen and consistent moisture, encouraging rapid, healthy growth. I noticed that when we plant the seed last week, we plant the seed in wet rock-wool and then we had to add extra water to the side, having extra water will it affect the the roots of the plants?
Question: Which procedure is healthier, planting seeds on the outside garden or planting seed in tower garden?
The tower garden is healthy environmental production food sever because you can grow your own food in the house if you don't have enough space in garden or you don't want to get messy outside, It's good for people who are not able to make change in outside, they could use tower garden at home to produce healthy food. My understanding of Earth as a system is that we have a "Photosynthesis" is the process by which plants, some bacteria, and some protistans use the energy from sunlight to produce sugar, which cellular respiration converts into ATP, the "fuel" used by all living things.

Rockwall Plants:

Marketmore Cucumbers

Peppers

Cherry Tomatoes

Sweet Basil

Day one

In our beginning stage we had a lot of trouble with our plants beginning to grow we thought that we would have to start over and replant because none of them were sprouting.

Day two

Prediction:I think that the tomatoes will sprout first (Which they were the first to sprout).-We labeled the three plants, peppers, tomatoes, basil and cucumbers. And then carefully set them under the light and into their water beds so they can start the growing process.

Day three

-We also checked the progress of our plants the tomatoes  were beginning to sprout  I can predict that the basil will be the next plant to sprout next because you can start to see somewhat of a difference in the rockwall.

Day four

-The only two which have started growing is the tomatos and the basil the other two haven't started yet and have had zero progress at all.

Day 5

-We have not yet transferred any of our plants to the tower garden yet

The factors that affected our garden was  the amount of seeds we put in the water and light that it was receiving and if we were careful when planting them. The conclusions that  I  can you draw based on my observations is that o plant grows exactly the same and just because it starts off slower doesn't mean it isn't gonna start blooming,

The Tower Garden connects to my understanding of the Environmental Science course and my overall understanding of the Earth as a system is that plants are a great way to represent  studing the environment physical, biological  information and practicing oberservation and patience. It helps us understand the earth systems because  we get to study the earth based nutrients tahts involved and growing something and see how much effort and time is put into studing this.

Conclusion:

During the project, I often have talked with my group discussions and encouraged to seek feedback from my group members about our work. The water cycle and atmosphere after our plant they grew, for example, our lettuce and cucumber along with everyone else grew the faster due to the weather and also because of water cycle it was reviving. After we have collected and analyzed our data what we have done so far, and analyze our experimental methods challenge. Working in small groups, we have a support from each other in our observation data collection and analysis to refine and strengthen their scientific arguments. Also,  We worked toward a culminating event during which is we can interact next time with adults acting as members of the community, such as an urban planner, environmental engineer,  scientist, and farmer. We also can say that to them that will work to these community members they might be able to use the Tower Garden to address issues in their local and global communities. Because it’s lots easier than doing another process. Based on this Tower Garden doing in our classroom team. I think we more eager to try vegetables. I feel like it gives us more ownership of our food system. Once we know how to grow food,  we do what we have to do. I can’t wait to see how is grow bigger. It seems to me our team love to taste vegetables and herbs from the Tower Garden in our classroom community.  In our observation, we  should have on our planet and  we also waiting for our vegetables that how quickly we get to eat the vegetables. How great it is to learn so early that we can easily grow the really nutritious and delicious foods our bodies need to be strong and healthy! I love to take care all of our plans also we love our Tower Garden.  We will get applied for a school salad bar to use our fresh produce next time. It will take little while for the rest of our plants such as the basil, paper, and eggplant to grow but for more climate trained plants they will be able to grow much faster. Tower Gardens have helped with my understanding of environmental science by showing me that there are more than two ways to grow pesticide filled food around us, and we can actually help out our communities physically and mentally by planting these foods, we can also so polluting the community this way as well.

A couple of ways that humans have altered the environment is by global warming, chemical fertilizers, cutting down trees and large scale farming. Sustainability when referring to the environment means is the ability to maintain the qualities that are valued in the physical environment. Threats to these aspects of the environment mean that there is a risk that these things will not be maintained. An environmental system as a system where life interacts with the various abiotic components found in the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere. Environmental systems also involve the capture, movement, storage, and use of energy. The First Law of Thermodynamics. The first law of thermodynamics, also known as Law of Conservation of Energy, states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed; energy can only be transferred or changed from one form to another. Systems can be open or closed to exchanges of matter, energy, or both. A systems analysis determines what goes into, what comes out of, and what has changed within a given system. Environmental scientists use systems analysis to calculate inputs to and outputs from a system and its rate of change. If there is no overall change, the system is in steady state. Changes in one input or output can affect the entire system. Variation in environmental conditions, such as temperature or precipitation, can affect the types and numbers of organisms present. Short-term and long-term changes in Earth's climate also affect species distributions. Environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people in the community. Philadelphia Water is committed to a balanced "land-water-infrastructure" approach to achieve its watershed management goals. Where appropriate, this method includes infrastructure-based approaches but focuses on implementation of a range of land-based stormwater management techniques and physical reconstruction of aquatic habitats.

Our Garden Observations & Questions

Plants

Observations/questions

Peppers (Nick)

What color will the peppers be? I observed my pepper seeds were really small. I noticed the vermiculite had to fill over half the hole and I wonder why?

Marketmore Cucumber (Imani)

How long will it take for the cucumbers to sprout? My seed were oval like.  I also observed that the cucumber seeds were relatively smaller than I expected them to be.

The lettuce is currently growing but I don’t see any cucumbers sprouting

My lettuce is currently still sprouting and getting bigger but i still don’t see any cucumbers

I wonder when the cucumbers will start to grow?

The ph balance in our water has dropped

Gourmet Lettuce (Jada)

Why are gourmet lettuce seeds so small? I had to fill my hole differently than everyone else’s because my seeds were smaller. The pH balance of the water is very high.

The lettuce is the only plant that’s growing somewhat.

The tomatoes and the peppers haven’t started to sprout yet.

The cucumbers started to grow as well as the tomatoes.

The lettuce has grown a lot and so has the cucumbers and tomatoes. The peppers haven’t grown at all.

Beefsteak Tomato (Moesha)

1/10/17

How will these large tomatoes grow in a small indoor environment?

I realized the tomato seeds were small compared to the actual size of the tomato when it grows. Each of my group members and I had to plant two seeds each except for Jada and her gourmet lettuce.

1/13/17

The lettuce is the only plant currently sprouting.

When will the tomatoes sprout?

1/17/17

The lettuce has sprouted and so did the cucumbers.

Unfortunately, the tomatoes and peppers haven’t sprouted.

When will the peppers and tomatoes sprout?

1/24/17

The pH balance of the water went from 7.0 to 6.5.

The cucumbers are growing the fastest.

The peppers have still not grown and I wonder why?

I hope my tomato plant doesn't get intertwined with the lettuce.

Slideshow of Our Tower Garden over 2 weeks https://youtu.be/0GDprgkiBpg

Tower Gardens Photojournal

When Ms.Aziz first introduced this project I was fairly excited about it because I never really planted anything inside before. I thought it was really interesting and cool that we have these resources to these kind of projects. I also liked how she introduced us to different ways of gardening. Tower gardening  promotes an environmentally just society because this brings the community together. This also benefits the rest of us as a whole. Our land is being used to grow natural resources. This can lead to a healthier for many people. This natural resources being grown can be sold as well. Young teens, and children are the future of this generation, so having them activate in this can help the world spread more quickly, and also draw more interest. Some factors that may have affected our garden is that one of our plants didn’t grow and that might have been because it was to much water or light.

The impact of humans on natural systems has been significant for decades. However, technology and population growth have dramatically increased both the rate and the scale of human-induced change. Sustainability is the use of Earth's resources to meet our current needs without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The ecological footprint is the land area required to support a person's lifestyle.

How will these large tomatoes grow in a small indoor environment?

I realized the tomato seeds were small compared to the actual size of the tomato when it grows. Each of my group members and I had to plant two seeds each except for Jada and her gourmet lettuce.
