Filthadelphia, PA

Our video features interviews with students and teachers. We named our video “Filthadelphia, PA” because of how much the littering problem and filth has taken over our city of Philadelphia.  We were able to get many different perspectives on the littering problem in Philadelphia. We chose to cover the littering “epidemic” in Philadelphia because we understand how big of a problem it truly is. Everyday walking through our neighborhood, seeing trash makes us feel truly ashamed, especially when it is not much for us to do about it. We wanted to understand how other people felt about trash being in their neighborhoods and the type of effect it could have.

I was in charge or interviewing the people featured in the documentary. I also made the script for the voiceover featured in our project. I feel that I was an effective interviewer that asked the questions necessary in order to get our message across in the video.

I asked very good questions during the interviews. I believe I asked thought provoking questions to our interviewees. I also feel that I did a good job of picking a wide range of students and teachers to interview. I wish we could have got more footage of Philadelphia for the video.

The most meaningful part of this experience was interviewing Mr. Rosen-Long who gave an interesting and very different perspective on the littering problem in Philadelphia. He changed my idea of why there is a litter problem in Philadelphia. I won’t explain what his perspective was because it is featured in our video which I hope you will check out!

Anaiah On The Street: Air Pollution

In our video, we decided to create a parody of the television/web series “Billy On The Street”, where we question people on the spot and see exactly what they know about air pollution, the effects, and causes of air pollution while still having a comedic twist to it. I chose this topic because, as someone who often can’t breathe around smoke and other air pollutants, and someone who is socially aware about how it’s affecting our climate, I think people really need to know that although it doesn’t look like it, our city is very polluted and there needs to be information getting out there.

I felt a bit like the director and editor of the group. I made sure that we got all the footage we needed, that the video looked nice and presentable, and that all the information was contained in the video while still trying to keep it entertaining. I feel like we got what we wanted with our video: to be short, succinct, and funny while still giving out information about air pollution. What I wish I could of done differently is focus more on my group, as when I tried to I had to help other people and got sidetracked often.

The most meaningful part of this experience was seeing and getting genuine reactions from people to see what knowledge they have on air pollution. It was great to get their answers and to know that they know a ton on air pollution facts and how to help.

Water Pollution.

  1. In Environmental Science, we've talked a lot about Environmental Justice, and what it means to be environmentally just. The definition of environmental justice according to Wikipedia is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies. In order for my project to relate back to this topic, I researched different issues that I thought would inspire me to educate the world on, similar to what I did with the Dakota Access Pipeline. I decided that I would discuss an issue with something that I use everyday, which was water. My group and I focused on the Delaware River as it runs through Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The issue of water pollution pertained to me because there are people who do activities in this water such as rowing, and the water which contains toxins, and bacteria can splash on them, and then they often will just get in their car with the wet clothes from rowing, and contaminate their car with bacteria, and they're unaware of it.
  2. The members of my group were Keya Ghosh, Samir Smith, and Jenna Cox. The role that I played in the group was the organizer. I helped to keep all of the documents organized, and made sure they were completed in a timely manner, and there were little to no errors. I also made sure that no group member had a bigger part than someone else and that we had enough time to edit the video.
  3. In regards to what we did well, I believe that I did well with organization, and proofreading. I could have done my recordings earlier in time though, because I could only hope that I spoke well enough, and loud enough for the video. I also think that I could have set a dress code so that we all would have been in the video instead of doing a voiceover.
  4. The most meaningful part of the creating the PSA is that I was able to collaborate with a new group of people who have different abilities, as well as learn more about a topic that I would have glossed over in the news. I hope that the right people come in contact with the video my group members and I created, and learn a lot about it. I was also able to incorporate prior knowledge of water issues into the PSA which made it even the more meaningful for me.

Air Pollution Parody: "Anaiah on the Street!"

Our video is a PSA made into a “Billy on the Street!” parody where we run around to people in our school and question them on various subjects surrounding the air quality in Philadelphia and how people are affected by it. I think air pollution affects the most in any given area in the city than any other form of pollution so I thought “Why not make the PSA on a relevant topic that is relatable to the people affected by it?” Plus, out of the topics available, we chose air pollution because we were most knowledgeable about that in comparison to other environmental justice issues.

I contributed to the group by helping out with filming and recording some few scenes shot in the video. In addition to that, I made some few of the questions for the recording that were asked on video. I was more of an assistant to the head of the group because I am very inexperienced in video editing and in film direction.

I saw that I did well in filming when I was learning how to keep the camera steady more than anywhere else. After watching the video, I saw that the way I said certain things could have been better and how I approached people could have been more relaxed and comfortable as well. During the video, I tried greatly not to be bland but accidentally was awkward and uncomfortable to watch in some places.

The most meaningful part of creating the PSA was learning more about video editing while giving the message of the problems that Philadelphia currently faces with environmental issues. Video editing is an interest of mine that I always liked but never got into while I feel strongly that any environmental issue should be addressed sooner than later since they affect us later on, so this project really brought those things together.

Philly's Fight for Environmental Justice Q2

Our video addressed  the issues regarding crude oil trains and how Philly can take action to make sure that if one of the trains passing through happens to derail, we have a plan and can take action. Oil trains run through Pittsburg, New Jersey, New York, Minnesota, Washington state, California, and Pennsylvania. We chose to focus on this because the media wasn’t really bringing attention to the issue and also Pennsylvanians don’t have any laws to protect their residents from this issue. This is a major problem because in the past three years there have been three derailments just in Pennsylvania. We need to take a stand and make a law to make sure we can prevent future accidents. Everyone should have access to clean air water and  soil, and to a healthy, safe, livable community. Unfortunately, these rights are often denied to minority and low-income communities, creating a disparate risk and environmental injustice for Pennsylvanians.

We set up our video as a news report. In the video you have news reporter, Governor Tom Wolf, Senator Hillary Clinton, and a random resident from the neighborhood. Governor Tom Wolf and Senator Hillary Clinton are discussing their major concerns who on the crude oil trains and why it’s important that the issue is addressed.

My contributions to this project was help create the script, helping edit the video, and set up recording times. I believe that I did a fair share amount of the work. Things I did well during this project was keeping everything organized and staying on top of the checkpoints and something I could have done differently was maybe thinking thoroughly on the PSA. I think towards the end of the project my group members pulled it together to create a great video. The most meaningful part of the experience of creating the PSA was knowing that I’m getting awareness out there to the world. To be a part of something like that makes me want to take more steps to get other environmentally justice issues out there.

Illegal Dumping in Philadelphia

Reflection

  1. In our video we decided to focus on the dangers and effects on the environment that illegal dumping had around the city in the video we discussed what is usually thrown just on the ground on a regular basis and we also explained how these things being dumped on the corners and in vacant lots is destroying our environment and we lastly discussed hotlines that you can contact when you see someone dumping things illegally or see something that was dumped illegally.

  2. In my group I played a big role in the creation of our video I recorded some of it and in the parts that i was in the video I spoke on the hotlines that can be contacted for illegal dumping.

  3. I did a good job at recording and acting in the video. Something I could have done differently is write a script for myself instead of improvising.

  4. Learning how these things affect the environment and how to combat them.

Littering PSA

Me, and my group decided to research and create a PSA on the littering issue in the city of Philadelphia. The reason we chose this topic is because we believe that litter is the biggest issue concerning the environment in Philadelphia.

The most meaningful part of doing this project to me is the fact that I am making a difference in my community by creating a PSA and raising awareness about environmental justice. It feels good to have done something relevant that concerns all of us and our very lives. Maybe I could inspire somebody who watches my video to re-evaluate themselves and treat the environment and the community around them better.

I am proud of myself and my group. I am proud of what I contributed to the group and also what my group did and contributed. I just wished I could have fixed some minor errors in our video and and more pieces to improve our video because I do believe there is room for improvement and it can be better.

I hope everyone enjoys our video!

Crude Oil Trains

The video below was made to publicize an underrated issue, CSX crude oil trains running through PA. Most people, including myself, are unaware that these oil trains are passing through our state and to most that might not seem like a problem. However, there have been several reports of these trains derailing which leads to dangerous oil spills and could harm a lot of civilians. Pennsylvania is the not the only state where these trains pass through, but the reason it's an issue specifically for citizens of PA is because of the fact that we don't have any laws protecting the trains or the people living near the tracks. The reason I chose to do this topic is because as a citizen of PA I think it is important for not only our health and safety but as a community that we have the resources and capability to immediately take action if a train is at risk of derailing or does derail.

I contributed to this project by doing several interviews with fellow students to hear what they know about the trains and their opinions on them and to also provide awareness. I also did extensive amounts of research on train crashes, derailments, and other issues that could be caused by these trains. As well as acting in a scene as Hillary Clinton to show a political view of the issue. I wish I had helped more with the video editing process but I think the research I did for the video was a great help and it also gave me a new view on crude oil trains. Doing this project showed me how little we know about what's happening in our own neighborhood, before doing this I had no idea these trains were running through Philadelphia, let alone near homes with families.

B-Band Art
January 11, 2017

When doing this project I learned a lot of things in the process. I learned my vision for my work wasn’t that far off but I wanted my shading to be a lot better. I achieved most of what I wanted despite messing up some of it. I think most of the people who see my painting will just see a rose. My rose reflects things in my daily life because it’s a flower and flowers are in nature. I did a rough draft of my picture first, I created a rough draft and a final copy on canvas and I painted it. My work fits in with contemporary art because Morris’ painting “Fruit in the blue bowl” he used a lot of the same colors that I used like red blue and purple. We both also created simple pictures. I think by working on this project I made comparisons with the modern day artwork and that I have really high expectations for myself when I paint/draw/etc.

Value, Line and Texture Drawing

The reason  why I have created this work is because I was gonna draw actually gonna start by drawing a cube but some house expanded on it and made more than I was going to do. Which became sort of like two hallways.

At first what I was hoping to achieve was a cube but I saw that it wasn't coming out the way I wanted it to come out so I wasn’t accomplishing my goal. So then I just decided to add random thing to my drawing and came up with two hallways like if it was an apartment, but I drew it randomly so I didn't really do it based off of two point perspective.

I think that what my art communicates to any viewer is an illusion in most of it and many different colors just mixed in, also how I fixed it by adding the two points of perspective and then fixing it which made it way better.

What I think I’ve achieved through the creation of this art is how to draw a two point perspective piece of art.

I don’t think that my current work relates to any of my previous work because when I learned how to draw a one point perspective room I was a freshmen and I am now a sophomore. And I haven’t learned how to draw a two point perspective drawing this was my very first time doing this.

My piece of art fits into the Abstract Sculpture Sean Newport made a sculpture that causes an illusion and I made a drawing causing an illusion.

The first thing I did was draw a rough draft of what I wanted to do which was a cube. But then I just switched up and added plenty of things and made lots of changes. I had to eliminate so many things and add others.

What inspired me to draw this piece of art is that last year I learned how to draw a one point perspective room but this time I wanted to do like two hallways going to two apartment doors.

I guess you can say that this work reflects the world we live in because nowadays there are various artists that draw pieces of art like the one I did. I don’t really think that this work reflects on my own life. My experience was last year because I learned how to draw 3D objects and illusions.

I think that my work could influence or make an impact on the world is because when people look at my drawing they can come up with so many stories to it because of the various things I’ve drawn.

Knowing what your doing is very important because I didn’t know that I had to draw two point so I could draw the walls of the halls perpendicular to one another and so that everything can be equally measured.

Do some research or ask your teacher about what your doing make sure your 100% you're sure you know what you're doing.

In conclusion I think that I have improved my piece of art in a major way because I started of with just a cube and ended with 2 apartments. This is why when your drawing you should have an open mind because you never know if you're going to expand on your drawing or make a whole new one that’s better.

Essence Artist Statement

I chose to create this art because I thought that it would be unique. I had two different pieces art and looking at them I really liked the way they worked together. I have a love for eyes and flowers, I never thought it’d look nice to combine them. I just wanted to convey an image that catches the eye and looks nice. I think it communicates that the artist has a love for eyes. I think I achieved the view I was trying to get across. I think since a lot of my pictures are of eyes this one connects to it, but it is also an improved version of my past attempts. My art kind of reminds me of Wolfgang Tilmans. I created two separate pieces of art and attached them together to make one. I first drew the flowers, then the eye. Together they worked well so I decided to make that my final project. I didn’t have any inspiration from anyone other than myself. It doesn’t really reflect the world we live in. I guess it shows how there is art and beauty in things that you wouldn’t think would make sense. Maybe my art can influence others to try to make something that doesn’t necessary makes sense, but still reflects themselves into the work. The shading was an important part of my work. It adds to the effect for me somehow. I learned a lot more about shading and texture making this. (blending as well)

Illegal Waste Dumping PSA

Reflection

  1. Provide a summary of the contents of your video and a rationale for why YOU chose this topic, in paragraph form.

    1. The content of my video was showing how people constantly dump in the streets as if it is nothing, our video explains how this can harm not only the environment but every living organisms within the environment. Our topic was Illegal Waste Dumping and this topic was chosen because this is a growing problem in the Pennsylvania but also The United States and this is what we call home so we are suppose to keep it safe. This problem is killing our environment and it affects us as humans in our everyday life and if we as young adults do not fix the problem now the younger generation will not have the earth to enjoy because it will be destroyed.

  2. Provide a reflection on how you contributed to the project and the role you played in the group.

    1. I contributed in the group by helping out with the script, recording and engaging in group conversation on how we can make the video much better or how to go to the extra mile in this assignment.

  3. What did you do well and what could you have done differently?

    1. I worked well with my group members and we communicated well with each other. I think what I could have done differently was my time management. Sometimes when we were suppose to be on track we were not because all members of the group were not there.

  4. What was the most meaningful part of the experience of creating the PSA?

    1. The most meaningful part of the creating this PSA was that I learnt so much while doing it and that I can make a change by speaking on the problems I see and inform others. It will not just happen overnight but I know that I can make a change because this is a problem and by doing this PSA it had taught me so much about how we as humans destroy the place we call home and it made me think on some things differently.

#TheCrudeIsRude

Reflection

This video was created to inform Philadelphians about the CSX Crude Oil Trains that pass through Philadelphia. I chose this topic because many Philadelphians like myself were naive that trains transporting oil pass through our city. There has been no plan for evacuation created in case an explosion happens. These trains go past the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, North Philadelphia, and Center City where many people live. The fumes these trains leave behind makes our environment worse than it already is. I think all residents should be aware of what passes through their neighborhoods that could potentially harm them.

My contributions to this project were editing footage and audio for the public service announcement video. Also, I organized times to record and the content that should be displayed in the video. I gathered most of the statistical information presented to viewers. I did well with researching and relaying information, but I could have communicated with my group members more about their contributions. The most meaningful part of the experience of creating the PSA was getting the SLA Beeber community involved in the project and their opinions. This opened up my eyes to how many people don’t know about what goes on in the places they live in. I think this issue should be brought to the attention of lawmakers, so they could create regulations for the CSX Crude Oil Trains and a plan of evacuation if an accident is to occur.

Reflection Video - Indigo Harris

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDx0gALcXe4
After doing all the research, helping create a script and then creating a video to help bring it to live, I feel like I have learned a lot and gained a lot of information My role in the group was to help find the information to create the script. This was a topic I took interest i because we touched base on this topic in class closer to the start of the school yer and I was interested in where else the topic would go so I talked to my group members about furthering our research so that we could learn more about the topic. I think many people can learn from watching our video, we aimed to make our video entertaining and educational. We wanted our video to inform while also keeping the people engaged in the video. My creativity added on to the group a lot, I helped come up with a lot of our ideas we added to the video. Something that could have been worked on was our communication. I feel like we didn't talk to each other enough through this process of creating this project. The most meaningful thing that came from creating this PSA was that we got the information out there and now people are informed and that's all as a group we wanted.

Value, Line, Texture Project

I created this work because the art project that I chose focussed on textures and I felt that eye sketches demonstrated texture in artwork nicely.  My vision changed throughout the project because I was not sure what I wanted to do, but for the drawing I chose, my vision was to have an eye that showed a wild, fierce, look to anyone who stared at it. I felt it was challenging because my drawing consisted only one eye.

I think my art communicates that the eye of the beholder could say many things even though it haven’t spoken at all. I think I achieved a piece of artwork that means different things to different viewers, but it says the bigger picture states the same. My current work relates to my previous work because I think my previous work has been very technical. Even the color wheel that we did previously had a technical design to it which was the dream catcher. I think my work mostly relates to Cindy Sherman because most of her portfolio is in black and white I feel like her art is very technical like mine. The process for my work was not like others.

I switched through my materials from choosing to draw with regular pencils or charcoal pencils, even though it was more difficult I chose charcoal because it looked nicer. It was very hard making sure the charcoal doesn’t smear and even so, it still looked smeared in the end. Sources for my inspiration were pieces of artwork that I’ve found off of various websites, but the artists were anonymous or unknown. Most of the pictures I’ve seen came from Pinterest , so I couldn’t really find the real source of the artwork.

My artwork reflects my life because it reflects what want my personality to be like. I feel that the eye gives off a fierce “don’t mess with me” kind of look and that is a personality I want to portray in life. I don’t want people to fear me , but I do want people to know me as the girl that gets what she wants by hardwork and determination. My work could influence the world because it could help women see that they could be this determined girl in my artwork and don’t have to back down from a fight when the times get rough. Certain technique is important to the artwork because I feel that if I made a mistake in the eye itself then some people would get confused on what the parts of the eye were, like in my eye there is a reflection of a light in it and I feel like it could easily be mistaken for something else. A new technique that I experienced with in my project was working with charcoal. I feel that next time I use it I will be able to handle it more properly when moving my artwork into my backpack so the pencil won’t smear into my other papers and around my artwork

In conclusion, I’m glad I did this project because I feel like it wasn’t too difficult, but it did present it’s challenges. Also, I feel like since I made did this project it gave me an idea on which project I wanted to do next because it was certain parts of the projects that I enjoyed that I found I would do more of in some of the other projects.

The Long and Lean Ballerina

Tania Crowell.JPG

I chose to do Limited Palette Painting project because it was a challenge for me. It was a challenge because of the thought of using only 3 colors to do a painting was different from how I usually do work with paint. When I chose to do this project I looked at examples of people's work that used only using 3 colors. I saw a pattern with people doing lots of nudes/skin tone so that kinda gave me an idea in how to make a ballerina. I know that ballerinas dresses can be a simple white . This painting was very different and fun to try out.

My vision for my work was making a ballerina that was the  most realistic and detailed as possible. What I wanted to  communicate to the viewer was the skill of a dancer. In the painting I wanted to capture a moment of her performance when she's standing still before she continues to dance again. I believe that my creation achieved uniqueness. When I was creating this art piece I wanted to make it look its best and stand out from other artists in my classroom. I did that by of course having a different canvas (wood board)  and capturing a ballerina dancer performing  on her tippy-toes.  I believe that my current work does not relate to my previous work because  it had different directions in how I did  the artwork, for example the first art piece was on making a color wheel and the one that I just did with the ballerina was limited colors only 3. Both projects are very different.  Both art  pieces to relate on the way of using  paint. I believe that MIKHAIL BARYSHNIKOV and Alli te Espero, 2003  really relate to my artwork.

In one of the paintings that MIKHAIL BARYSHNIKOV did called Untitled #7, 2008 is this beautiful simple painting. I has nice mix of grays and blacks and browns that I believe relate to my artwork. I believe that he really captured the movement of the dancer and my art peace didn't really show movement but it should a women in mid air dancing. I really wanted to capture her silhouette and her dance routine in a moment.  In my painting I did not find that the face was important but I wanted expres the body and the movement, you can see she's stopping from a spin. I believe  that this connects to MIKHAIL BARYSHNIKOV because he doesn't really have her face in the painting at all. In BERNARDO TORRENS art work called Alli te Espero, 2003 , the artwork I think it relates to my art work because in how he has the  same materials that I use such as wood canvas. The naked women has the same hairstyle as my ballerina dancer which is a bun. He uses a women as his artpeace like mine and he focused on skin tone like I had to in my drawing. My process for doing this art piece was starting of the background. I didn't want to use to dark of colors so I decided to do a light gray that would later become dark gray. Then I started to do the wood floors in which the ballerina dancer would later dance in. When I was done with the background I started right away on her dress. I had to experiment a lot on her dress. I noted then that the background was clashing with her white dress so then that's when I changed the background to medium gray. After I changed the background I started to only use the fat pointy brushes for the bottom part of the dress and for the to of her dress I did a small brush that would culet the white paint more and would make it less transparent and much more solid

I looked at lots of examples of artist that did beautiful ballerinas that inspired me to make a balerna, the following link is what I used for my research.https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fimage.shutterstock.com%2Fz%2Fstock-photo-oil-painting-girl-ballerina-drawn-cute-ballerina-dancing-251591584.jpg&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.shutterstock.com%2Fpic-251591584%2Fstock-photo-oil-painting-girl-ballerina-drawn-cute-ballerina-dancing.html&docid=oOF9IKZhW7khGM&tbnid=LOVuF6YrfCqZ8M%3A&vet=1&w=1500&h=1596&safe=active&bih=631&biw=1366&q=ballerinas%20dancing%20in%20a%20painting%5C&ved=0ahUKEwjcncOhxLbRAhUPelAKHSnsDV0QMwgmKAswCw&iact=mrc&uact=8 and https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fs-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com%2Foriginals%2Fb9%2F04%2F85%2Fb90485527e6a903cf3615f8fee710c2d.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinterest.com%2FKatDoyle1%2Fballet%2F&docid=RuwrmFclv3KEIM&tbnid=NC9h1Y2ya0iyAM%3A&vet=1&w=392&h=550&safe=active&bih=631&biw=1366&q=ballerinas%20dancing%20in%20a%20painting%5C&ved=0ahUKEwjcncOhxLbRAhUPelAKHSnsDV0QMwgpKA4wDg&iact=mrc&uact=8 and https://flamencopaintings.files.wordpress.com/2014/09/irinaw.jpg

How does your work reflect the world you live in? Your own life? Your experiences?

What I enjoyed in doing this art piece was the fact that when I was drawing and painting there was skills that I learned . I had lots of fun with the process and how it would look in the end and I must say that I wasn't completely thrilled with the end result but the experience and the rules for this painting made it worthwhile to me. I went to the Barnes Foundation  this weekend for my dad's birthday and so many paintings that have influenced artist and tourist. I found that people that were looking at the artwork at the Barnes Foundation we're really happy to be there and be surrounded by art. When I should my mom my art work she was very happy with it and I hope to make more art work that later in the future influence people. If the ballerinas tutu was heavy she wouldn't have looked like a ballerina. I learned how to make fabric feel light and fluffy on the wood canvas.

Art 2 Quarter 2 Final "The Art of a Sandwich"

I created this work because I thought it would be a challenge and also because I saw a sandwich in my lunchbox. It ended up being a challenge for sure because I could only mix three starting colors. An example of this is the crust of the sandwich. I couldn’t make a brown, so I had to be creative with which colors I mixed. My overall vision for the work is to make people have more of an appetite when they look at it. I accomplished this with my peer critique partner. My work communicates that food is a necessity to life, so why shouldn’t we make it look and taste good? By doing this, I became more thankful and grateful that I have access to food. I learned how to mix colors when I painted my color triangle. This taught me how to look at the three colors that I started with, white, red, and yellow, with a different light. I am now familiar with more colors as a result.

My work fits in with contemporary art because it is based on a realistic thing, but it is somewhat abstract. I can compare my painting to “Éclair” by Derrick Guild. Some similarities are that both paintings are of food, and both are of something sandwiched between bread. A difference is that his is more realistic and he has cream in the center instead of turkey and cheese. In order to create my artwork, I started with sketching. Then, I painted over the pencil with paint, and I used really light yellow for cheese, yellow for mustard, light pink for turkey, and a really light tan color for the bread. The crust was the most challenging part to come up with a color for, so I used orange primarily, but some red in some spots. This work reflects my own life because I like food, and I like sandwiches. Therefore, painting a sandwich accurately reflects a part of my life.

My work can make an impact on the world because it could inspire viewers to not take food for granted, and maybe even to lead a healthy lifestyle. I created texture by doing blobs of paint in certain places, and this made it more realistic. Specifically, the blobs made the turkey more 3D. I learned and practiced the technique of painting with a palette knife. I used this for the background, and it created depth. I am excited to use this technique more in my artwork. All in all, I enjoyed painting this artwork, and I am proud of the work I did.

Q2 Environmental Science Reflection & PSA By Eliza Meketon

Please enjoy our air pollution PSA

Reflection

Our video was about bringing awareness of the rampant air pollution in one of Philadelphia’s poorest districts, the River Wards. We discovered that the River Wards has a shocking amount of people who have had to go to the hospital due to asthma related symptoms. We believe that the problem really stems from the fact that the River Wards was a very industrialized district back in the day and that the pollution caused from large factories has lingered and has caused many of its' residents ongoing health issues. The video really calls people to action, especially since it features a preview into the River Wards future, which is ultimately not a pretty sight. The fact of the matter is, air pollution has been a pepple in America’s shoe for quite sometime, not only that, but countries all over the world are starting to see the effects of reckless industrialization and air pollution.

I chose this particular topic because while we may not see the signs of the ways in which we currently pollute the earth, air pollution is relatively easy to see the effects of. As I said before, people are having to be hospitalized just for stepping outside. That is just not right in my opinion. If things don’t start to change, than the dystopian future we demonstrated in our PSA will become our very grim reality. The thing about air pollution is that due to the fact that much industrialism in America happened before I or any of my classmates were born. A whole generation would never have experienced a world without air pollution. Imagine how much longer our life spans might be if we severely regulated factories, automobiles, or anything else that produced larges amounts air pollution. I just wanted to show the world that we as a society need to step up and start thinking of solutions and do our part for our neighbors and the world as a whole.

I think I contributed to this project by helping create the script, helping edit the video once we shot it, as well as having a speaking role within the video. I think I did my fair share of work and I feel as though my team members would support that statement. I think that we as group in general worked really hard to create a top quality PSA and I am very proud of the work and effort that and  my team members put in it. I believe that I tend to try to be more of a leader, however I feel like I had a really amazing team and I always had someone to help me so I didn’t have the take all the responsibility of getting everything together which was really nice and I really appreciated my team members.

I think that I really used the class time efficiently and I got something done on the project each class. I think that I also made sure that we were getting things done in a timely manner and keeping everyone aware of the deadline. I think maybe I could have started working on the project a little earlier than we did, I think that maybe I should have worked on the script sooner. I also feel like I could have maybe worked a little harder to make sure everyone felt like they we being allowed to contribute. Sometimes i'm so focused on what I am doing I forgot to include other people.

I think the most meaningful part of the PSA was watching it slowly all come together. There was this great moment when we were editing and I saw all the content that we had and I just remembered how in the previous week we barely had anything. It is a pretty great feeling to see all your hard work on a platform. Sometimes with projects, it is just one and done, however this project might actually be shown to a larger audience if it gets picked for the film festival which is pretty amazing. When you're doing these types of projects, a lot of the time it just feels like it is just work for work's-sake, however air pollution is something that affects all of us and it is a very serious ongoing problem that most people just shrug off as another issue with no solution. However we wanted to open minds and allow people to come to the conclusion that silence in this case is deadly. It is time to speak up and take action

Environmental Justice PSA Project

For this quarter's benchmark my group chose to do air pollution, we focused on a certain part of Philadelphia though. We did the Riverwards which is a very toxic place in Philadelphia with about 5 or 6 neighborhoods within it. Asthma and death rates were high in the area. There were about 400 people more or less affected in the whole city of Philadelphia as of August 2016. A problem that we found was that a number of old buildings and factories were polluting the air both when they were active and now.
We chose this topic because millions of people die globally each year which is a huge problem. Our human population and other populations are dropping dead due to the chemicals, fumes, and toxic/trashy smells being released into the air. An example, about a week ago in South Philadelphia the air had a foul smell which was caused by a ferry in the water where oil was leaking. Little things like that can cause a big problem. An oil leak made a part of the city smell like it was rotting. We chose to this for reasons like that, the air can be polluted by little things which our human population will always be affected by. My group would just like to bring awareness to air pollution because some people don't know every component of this type of pollution and we would like them to know what they can learn and do from us.
In this group, I contributed ideas, and lots of information on this topic. I also contributed support to my team members ideas and tried to come up with suggestions if I didn't quite like their idea. In this group, I worked on this video with some of the creative things within the video. I said a lot of my knowledge of computers in learning how to find things and bring things up that my partners weren't able to do. I believe that I could have done better with my research portion. I found the valuable information I just don't think that all of my information was good for the part of the city we focused on. I believe I did well with communication and staying on top of all my responsibilities in this project. I was on top of everything I had to do.
The most meaningful part in creating this PSA was being able to communicate with everyone without a problem and everyone being supportive and understanding. Also learning how to use the editing app to make the video. I learned a lot moving through this project. Things like using the green screen. This project has taught me a lot about air pollution. I knew some things and I learned more things. This project was meaningful in a lot of ways.

I.S.G

1. The internet changed the way the humans communicate in many ways. There is a current theory or hypothesis that relationships are not as deep as they used to be since there is less “face-to-face” interaction and more “screen-to-screen” interaction 2. Immediacy-Regardless of the speed of your Wi-Fi or any other variable the chances are that when you attempt to post something its going to post immediately. In other words, it posts instantly. This leaves very little room for a mistake or human error. Therefore, be very careful about what you post or any site or app especially popular ones because of course “we are in the age of technology”- Mr. Hertz 3. Permanence- This is another word for immortal. To elucidate or clarify, once you post something it’s because of immediacy you won’t know how many people screenshotted, copied, reposted that item you posted. Causing a major predicament for you especially if you posted something demeaning, offensive or embarrassing, (and other word I didn’t cover). 4. Lack of Control- This what happen when mix Permanence and Immediacy you will get the word or topic “lack of control”. The meaning of this word is very self-explanatory. Basically, you have no control of what you post when you post it! Opening a “Pandora’s box” problems for you. 5. There are multiple ways to manage your reputation in the “real” world and in the “cyber “world. One of those ways are thinking very critically. In other words, carefully monitoring what gets posted and while thinking…Will this affect me in the long-run. Another way is to be very reserved. To clarify, many sites and apps have a “private account” option where only your friends (on the site and/or app) can see and read what post. Doing this allows you to let only the people you trust see your material. 6. In my personal opinion, I believe the internet has a series of rules that are very broad with overly complicated consequences. Causing people not to pay attention to rules and causing them no to respect them. Because of this, many people are very confused when arrested for violating a crime (internet-related). 7. Cyber-Bullying- bullying using anything that at some point you have to plug in. 8. Harassment and Stalking are two big kinds of cyberbullying. Harassment is considered cyber bullying since its basically regular bulling but just with a fancy name and with a device. Stalking is considering cyberbullying since you are constantly violate a person’s right of being watched without their permission. Or when you are going out your way to find somebody to pester them, watch them, or etc. 9. Victims- 1. Stay strong, 2. Don’t let em get you down 3. Speak up!!!! 10. Bullies- 1. Think Do I really want to do this?? 2. Remember karma exist 3. Remember “there is always someone better than you at playing dirty” 11. Bystanders- 1. What the heck!! 2. Help the poor man/woman. 3. Clearly they need help 12. Your Top 5 tips for using the Internet 1. Be careful 2. Be smart 3. Use common sense 4. Be responsible 5. Be “of age”

Survival Guide

  1. The internet’s communication has changed a lot. Before people just used to send emails now people chat on all different types of websites. Now people use google hangouts to text and to video chat.

  1. Immediacy means how fast a comment can travel from the internet. I think permanence is when you put something on the internet and it stays there. Lack of Control is when you don’t have control over what you post.  They affect your offline life because that’s the reputation you have now because of what you posted.

     3. Two ways you can protect your online identity is don’t use your full name on the internet and don’t talk about your private life.

4. I think the internet does and it doesn’t. I think it doesn’t because you are allowed to post whatever you want to post. But then again if you cross the line they can track you do and you can get punished.

5. I think cyberbullying is when you mess with somebody over the internet or when you harass them.

6. One type of cyber bullying is harassment. The other one is annoying someone.

7. I think that you should report whoever does that and if you do it you should stop. Cyber bullying caused people to kill themselves.

8. 1. Don’t Bully people

    2. Don’t give out your information

    3. Be smart

     4. Don’t say anything that you wouldn’t say in person

      5. Watch what you post
