Biochemistry Benchmark Ecosystems Response To Change.

Something that stood out to me during the creation of this project is the fact that we all know that the world is overpopulated, but what can we really do to change the world and make things not populated? I believe that you really can't put a limit on population. What if things become underpopulated because that's possible. I think that the world needs people to thrive in my opinion. I'm wondering if we can keep the population the way it is and change other habits? Would that help make the world a better place? We can say that it could, but scientifically would it?

I would say for the entire ecology unit, I understood most of it and was confused about a little. The one thing I didn't like about this is unit is all the reading. I don't enjoy reading, so all the packets we received was tiresome. The key things that I remember from this unit is when we did food chains and food webs; basically understanding how that worked out. That was fun to do and to use our own knowledge to make the chains and webs. The food matters campaign stood out to me because it really allowed me to see deeper how our food is really important, no matter if we're eating it or using it. The thing I'm still wondering is if its possible to add a few more years to earth's survival.

After finishing this benchmark, I understand how ecosystems can be affected by single populations and how it could potentially change the biome as a whole. For example, I found out that certain pests could infest the trees in the Taiga biome and completely destroy the current ecosystems. In addition, I have also learned that humans use the Taiga biome as a main source of lumbering, mining, and even industrial work. These factors harm the ecosystems in the Taiga biome. As the temperature raises up over time, species are being forced to move elsewhere as they are not suited for the current climate. Newer species take their places and this overall harms the ecosystems of the Taiga biome.

Ecology Benchmark: Researching the Amazon/Rainforest

For my quarter 4 biochemistry benchmark, we were assigned to choose a specific biome of our choice and research it focusing mostly on unique issues facing the biome. While completing this project, a lot of information about my chosen biome (the rainforest/Amazon) stood out to me. It was interesting to read because I wasn´t aware of how much damage people were causing our trees, animal and our world itself. Upon completion of the project, I enjoyed being able to make a physical display of the biome and having a chance to show my creative side to my classmates and teachers.

During this entire capstone procedure, I experienced lots of ups and downs throughout the entire project. Believe it or not, my whole goal got turned around and created the birth of my newly found idea. The intention of my capstone was to create an annual event for the future of the SLAB community to be able to have fun and enjoy. I illustrated a 3 on 3 basketball tournament for the students to participate in. How the tournament worked was, the first 16 teams that had entered were selected to play. There were a series of rounds that led up to the final championship game. In each of the previous rounds there was a scoring goal of 11, first team to it wins. In the final game the scoring goal increased to 21 in order for each team to get as many opportunities possible. After the winners were announced, each team member earned a unique t-shirt as well as SLAB’s very own ‘Annual 3v3 Tournament Champions’ trophy.
The extremely diverted amount of people that participated in the tournament was what really seemed to amaze me the most. Some people I knew for almost all four years of my high school experience and never knew that had any ounce of passion in them for basketball. From this, I took it as an understatement. Just because someone doesn’t try out for the basketball team does not mean they have no love for it. I learned that some people may even have a nick for something that they’ve never tried before. So for that, I’d like to thank everyone who participated in my event and hope that you’ll be there to continue the tradition.

KidNap: MaD Final Project

I created an action short using iMovie that was 1:30 long. The goals of this project were to entertain people and have fun, but I wanted to learn how to edit as well.

Step by step process:

  1. Plan out what the short film was going to be about

  2. Cast friends as characters

  3. Meet at a spot to record footage

  4. Begin choreography movements and director placements

  5. Begin recording (about 3 hours of collecting footage)

  6. Plan out editing style and use whatever software is the best

  7. Edit footage collected

Successes were, finishing the project and getting desirable footage. Failures were just retakes. Someone didn’t do something the right way, or the way I wanted them to, so we would have to retake certain footage, not mass amounts though. I learned how to imagine and brainstorm when it came to creating visual content. I became pretty confident with editing but not very great at it. I’m still learning a great deal and I know very little about it. I think the project itself doesn’t look the greatest but I used everything I knew about editing on this short film and I am very proud of that. I learned that I am good at directing and that people listen to what I have to say, most of the time, because I have a loud voice. If I could do this project differently I would start the recording process earlier. For anyone else doing this project I would say, don’t take the time that it takes to record for granted, because it’ll bite you later on in the project. Instead, record very early on so you have the footage you need in order to finish the project. The medium chosen added more depth and everydayness to the short film. This project has inspired me to learn a lot more about editing and encourage myself to excel at it. All of the sound effects were from iMovie on the Mac.

Sunrise- Roy Lichtenstein Recreation

For this piece, I decided to recreate/ make my own version of Roy Lichtenstein’s “Sunrise”. I chose this painting after studying his work and life over the 3rd quarter, at first I wanted to recreate a more iconic piece like “Drowning Girl” but I wanted to try something that I could make a little more my own. When looking at the painting compared to the original you will see that the colors are not the same, and I used two different sunrise paintings by Lichtenstein to create mine. At the bottom, there is something that resembles mountains or hills painted pink, and the clouds are right above it in white. The focal point of the painting, the sunrise, rests above the clouds making it look like a sunrise. The center of the sun is a light purple while its rays are a bright yellow against a blue background/ sky. Finally, at the top there is a white line as well as a pink like, I’m not sure what they act as, that was just apart of the original. With this painting I wasn’t really trying to convey much, more of show my knowledge of Lichtenstein’s work and try to create work like his. Before this, I had seen his work and admired it but I enjoyed creating something that was purely based off of his work.
https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/roy-lichtenstein-1923-1997-sunrise-5846083-details.aspx

To create this piece, I first sketched out the original painting with a few changes, then planned out my colors. Next, I began to paint, starting with the pink, then onto the blue, after those two I painted the yellow rays and the center of the circle purple. Next, I used white paint for the clouds. To figure out where to put my lines in the hills I ended up painting dark blue lines, but it was not as clean as I had wanted it to be so I covered it with more pink paint. After all of that, the basics of the painting was done and it was time for the line art. To do this I used a fine point pen and simply just lined the outsides of every part including the sun rays, the clouds, and the hills. Afterward, I drew the lines that were in the hills. To finish and make it more like Lichtenstein’s signature style I was going to put dots in all of the blue portions but I felt as though I would mess up what I had done if I did, so I only put the small fine dots all around the clouds in sections that were similar to the work I was recreating. There wasn’t much to this painting, the most struggle I had was not sectioning off while I was painting to have clean lines, I ended up free handing the entire thing, and although it doesn’t look bad, I feel like it could look better.

There wasn’t much technique that I used while creating this, mostly just painting straight lines, or curving them to create more texture in places it felt needed. The staple of Lichtenstein’s work was his dots, now I didn’t really do as many as I had planned but I still feel like I had enough to make it resemble his work to anyone who may recognize it. I tried to create the dots as best as I can but I wasn’t fully satisfied with them. I’m really proud of this work altogether I really like it. I really enjoyed my color scheme and the flow of the painting. If I could change anything I would use painters tape to have more clean lines.

In conclusion, I would love to make my own rendition of other artists work that I admire. I would do something like this again, it’s really fun and a way to learn new techniques and styles.

For my Project I chose image editing because I wanted to try something new that seemed fun and interesting. I did my project on Photoshop because that a software I hear all the time.  For my project I used two professional sports player that I respect a lot and have the same skin complexion and join the faces into one. Going into this project I didn't know what to expect. I didn't know how much of a challenge it would be. In the end I was not able to complete this project through me having to learn this complicated task while having to complete it. I couldn't right make the skin color one and cut off excess areas I didn't need. Over all I am proud of what I accomplished because of how new this kind of work is to me.
Through this project I learned how to do basic photo shop which I think most people should know especially if you are wanting to own your own business like myself. You will need to created your own logos. This project taught me better patience, problem solving, and how to preform better research since that is all I have been doing anyway.

Quarter 4 benchmark

I created a 1 of 1 jean jacket piece inspired by my artist who uses fabrics in her art. It was originally a black denim jacket with no coloring. Now it has a distressed collar and a flower design going over the arm and back of the jacket. I want the work to communicate several things like where you can find creativity. I used a pair of red shorts to create flowers on the jacket and I never thought I would be able to do that but my artist was able to help me see deeper than what was in front of me. I used a sewing machine for most of the project and scissors to cut up the materials. All of the jacket was done pretty much by hand. Using certain techniques is important because you want to be able to do your best on the product and clothes cost money. I learned that finding a piece of work that looks kind of similar to what your final product should look like helps guide you through the creating process.

I’m really proud of myself being able to create a denim jacket with my own taste on it for the first time. I think I also found a new passion through this project so I’m really happy I did this and chose the artist I did. Now if there was one thing I would change it would be the amount of gold I put on the jacket I feel like I could of done more to make the jacket even more unique.

Throughout this project I have learned how to use my creative eye to create a one of one piece that I can wear. I’ve improved my sewing skills and learned some techniques for sewing on the way.

Image Editing

For my quarter 4 project, I choose image editing again. This is the second time I am doing this project in my media design class. But, I decided to tell another story with two different pictures. This time instead of african roots it was about immigration. I edit it a boat and an airplane together because this is the way how immigrants travel to different countries. Also, depending on how you got to your destination overseas you can relate to the picture. So starting this project I thought it was going to be easy again, since it was image editing and I only had to submit two pictures but once I got to checkpoint 2, 3, and 4, I began to use photoshop where I had to  editing the two pictures together and save it as a png etcc. But, midpoint in the project I changed to Pixrl because that was in my chromebook so itwas going to be easier. Then, I came to realize that it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be because it was just like Photoshop on a different brand. Some failures I faced during this project was that I forgot along the way how to use photoshop so it was hard to manupilate a little with Pixrl.

So,  it took me back to square one and  it was a little hard for me to edit the two pictures and Pixrl functions a little different then Photoshop. Also, the pictures came out with one background in it unlike when I used Photoshop so I had to go back there to edit again. Some success during this was the story behind the picture and during my presentation I could express myself and explain the picture clearly. This project inspired me to tell another story in the same manner. During this project I did not learn anything about myself really.  If I were fortunated enough to do this project again I will not change anything I will only explore Photoshop and pixrl first and choose a different story. One, important advice that I have for the future people doing this project is that they should explore Photoshop and pixlr first to know what it can do, so they wouldn’t struggle at the end. Finally the tools I used was the magic wand, color changing, and eyedrop tool.

Q 4 Final project

For my artwork I tried to create something that I would care enough to work on. I decided to paint my indoor soccer shoe with watercolors. The materials I used were my shoe for a reference, a paint brush, watercolors, and a watercolor piece of paper. The shoe was based on the galaxy theme and I tried my best to recreate it. I then for the background continued the galaxy so the background and shoe can complement each other. The colors I used were red, black, white, orange, purple, and blue.

I don’t think I have ever made something as cool as this and a piece of are as good as this. I really tried on this one and loved the outcome. I love soccer and I felt like the color wave of the shoe and having it to do with soccer, would be fun for me to create. I learned how to contract make colors flow and how to take my time and care about your art piece from this assignment. If I were able to do this all again I would change nothing but the colors. I want this piece of art to be a reflection of me as a person who loves soccer and whose talents can possibly take him out of this world.

        Artist Statement

For my quarter four benchmark I chose to study the famous painted, Julie Mehretu. Her style of art is more abstract and architectural, which made it difficult to make an exact replica of her painting. A lot of her paintings were untitled including the one I created, but most all of her paintings follow the same abstract styles, very few of her paintings have color. There was was no specific reason why I chose to recreate the specific painting I did, it was just more appealing, because it actually had color. While creating this painting I was a little discouraged, I kept asking everyone “does it look like hers” or “ is it ugly”. Honestly because of the lack of set structure no one can recreate an abstract painting as good as the first one. In contrast I had a lot of fun once I got comfortable with the painting. I began to try different with such as smudging the black shade with my finger to get the shadow effect, there were many different shapes and lines that I had to mock in this drawing which made it more complex. The materials I used to create this project were: tombow mono pencils, color pencils, rules, finger (for smudging), and white drawing paper. After I saw my final result I was actually very happy, it turned out better than I expected. If I were to redo this project I would challenge myself even more and use paint instead of color pencils, because that is what Julie used to create this piece.

Tobacco and Public Health

For this project, we researched tobacco as a public health issue and created an educational video.  We asked “What is tobacco?”. We wanted to show that tobacco is dangerous to your health. There are no safe substances in any tobacco products.  From acetone and tar to nicotine and carbon monoxide, all can kill you.

These dangerous substances, which you inhale when you smoke or use other products,  don’t just affect your lungs. They can affect your entire body. Public health promotes and protects the health of people and the communities where they live, learn, work and play.  Tabacco use is a public health issue because smokers are unaware of the harm tobacco uses causes  themselves and those around them.

Many people start smoking at a young age because they did not know how dangerous smoking tobacco is for your body.  Public health education on the dangers of using tabacco is important because better education will stop people from starting to smoking or help people quil.

Cyrus Foster Q4 Art Project

For my quarter 4 project, I studied David Choe. He’s known for his street art and his figure paintings, which explore themes of desire, degradation, and exaltation, are characterized by a raw, frenetic tone that he has termed "dirty style." In my project, I tried to do my own interpretation of his style with a rough, imperfect, graffiti style look using multiple tools and a few of his many characters he’s known for drawing. To create this, I used acrylic paint, oil and acrylic paint markers, spray paint and ink. The spray paint was used for the green overspray while the ink was used to make the drips on the top left corner. Everything else was used for the background and to fill in the characters. Through this project, I learned how to use my resources to their best ability to recreate a specific style or look in my artwork. My tip to anyone trying to do this project would be to observe every small detail about the artist and find similar tools to the ones that the artist used. This project has inspired me to use other styles and techniques of artists to use in my own artwork.

Q4 Reflection Project

For this quarter 4 project in Art 2 I drew a picture of myself based in the style of artwork the artist I studied have done, I included different symbols that had some importance to the world like freedom posters, people holding hands to show unity. I included worlds like faith, an equality symbol, and a lotus flower. I drew this artwork to show what I reflect on and what I see in the world.

For this project I used a pencil, markers, transfer paper, and white copy paper. Throughout all the work I have done I had a connection to the artwork or even artist. Throughout completing each project I always create a plan and have rough copies of the final. To create this project I first studied the artist I chose to base my artwork on, I created an informational google slideshow. Then, I planned how I would use my time. I created my rough draft of what I wanted my final outcome. I made another rough draft by changing the picture of myself. I transferred the draft to the final paper tracing over and then using markers to color my final copy.

Another, artist that resembled Faith Ringgold’s artwork was Joseph Kosuth. Where his focus is more on being conceptual like so http://www.pomeranz-collection.com/?q=node/210

Many different techniques are important to art like using the best tools that fit the specific like maybe watercolor when creating a calmer piece or even little things like different textured paper. I worked more with transfer paper and grasping the idea of how it works which made the process a little easier. I am most proud of incorporating a reflection of the artist but something I like as well. One thing I would change is the size of my self image making it bigger to take up more space. Throughout this project I have learned more about another artist and even more and their way of expressing art, their ideas behind the art, and all that you can do to make an art piece.

Imani's Reflection
Imani's Reflection

Q4 Project

The emancipation approximation is a series of paintings made by kara walker. I chose to recreate this particular painting which is a screen print of a woman with a bird leaving her mouth that is represented as a swan. The woman appears to be standing in a wet area with plants around it. The background of the painting is white along with the plants, and the women and swan are painted black. Throughout the Emancipation Approximation Kara Walker used the swan as a symbol which is based on the greek myth,  Leda and the swan. The swan served as a way to portray a dirty/sexual statement. With the images of the women and the swans Kara Walker hoped to communicates the history of rape on female slaves by their masters. To create this painting I started out by sketching the image in my scrap book with just a pencil. After making the sketch, I drew another draft of the painting that would be transferred on to a canvas by tracing. To make the canvas, I cut a square from a canvas roll and stapled it. I then painted the full canvas with white paint. After the canvas dried, I transferred the drawing on to the canvas and began to paint. For the woman and swan I used black acrylic paint, I painted the background with white acrylic paint for a fresher look. To get a better texture of the acrylic paint, I used water with the paint brush. I am impressed at my ability to make remake the painting, considering the fact that there were many small areas that needed to be painted that could not interfere with the white paint.

Q4 Benchmark

Marieam, Hadja, and I did our PSA about Food Safety. We interviewed a man from the FSIS and we asked him a few of the questions we made, but we only added at the beginning why he thought food safety was important. We also did a good and bad way of practicing good food safety in the kitchen. I made the script and ws the voice over for the video. I like how our PSA video turned out because it is a fun way that we presented what could happen if you don't practice food safety.

I think people as a whole affects public health like with the E. Coli outbreak. If we don't make it known people could die and cause another outbreak. Society, politics, and economy plays a big role on the healthcare system because without politicians we wouldn't have people fighting for new healthcare policies and without a society there are no people who would use the healthcare policies that the politicians are making. Without the money from our economy, we can't pay for all the things needed in the healthcare system.

Tobacco in Public Health PSA

For my final benchmark I choose to focus on tobacco and public health. But first What is public health? Public health is the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities. And what is tobacco? Tobacco is an agricultural crop, most commonly used to make cigarettes. It is grown all over the world and supports a billion-dollar industry. I decided to focus on tobacco because I felt like all i knew about it was that it was bad and a legal thing, also everyone everywhere smoke. I also know too many people that smoke all I can tell them is that smoking is bad stop smoking but I couldn’t say why. But after this project I learned that the regular cigarette might be safer then the new tools to smoke tobacco. I also know that people think they look cool while smoking by they don’t look really look cool. They are just putting their life in danger. Also the rhular cigarette reduces your life about 11 minute, but the new tools like hookah etcc is high in tar and might be high in nicotine also the chemicals in tobacco. Nicotine is the addictive thing in all cigarettes. Also we all know that smoking is bad I don’t understand why a lot of people still smoke. And why do government make it illegal.
