Volunteer Experience

As a student volunteer of the Committee of 70 my group and I walked around the Roxborough area assisting the elderly with the voting process as well as answering questions they did not understand.  Although the process was not fun, I thought it was interesting. My group was assigned ward 21. The four locations we visited were; Cook Wissahickon School, Andorra Branch Library, Houston Recreation Center, and Saul High School. The process was nothing like I expected, I thought that there would be lines of people at each location and that they would know what the questions ment. I was lucky to see maybe four people at each location and I had to read the background information for most of the questions I asked. I did not see anyone less than forty years old. Walker made it sound like were were going to be doing an amazing thing and help the community and meet new people. I am sure the data we gathered was important, but out of the dozen people I asked about five of them said they had time to answer my questions. All the people were trying to do is vote but people would keep giving them flyers trying to sway them to vote for whoever they wanted to win. When they exit the building they are bombarded with questions from other people and when they get to me they are tired of asking questions and they walk away or answer the question without any thought. I know the importance of voting, but it seems like it is more work then it is worth to cast your vote and I think this is why young people do not vote. One question I have is why can't we vote online? It would be more convenient easier to do, and you don't have to go anywhere.  But at the end of the day it was not a bad experience I walked away with a ton of flyers, committee of 70 lanyard, and a sweet Sean Stevens pen.

2016 Primary Election

On April 26, 2016 the people of Pennsylvania exercised their right to vote in republican and democratic primary election. The Primary Election is the election when you vote to who you want to see on the ballot for president in November. As a high school member of the Committee of 70 it was my duty to visit as many polling places in the 21st ward of Philadelphia, help voters with any questions they had about the ballot, collect sample ballots and ask voters

IMAG2143.jpg(Photo taken at the Andorra Branch Library)

after they voted unbiased questions to help better the government in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. We asked the voters five questions after they casted their ballot, (1) Would you support allowing voters the option to request and submit absentee ballots before Election Day without offering a reason or excuse?; (2) Would you support allowing voters the option to vote for a certain period before Election Day at a select number of early voting locations?; (3) Would you support amending the PA Constitution to create an independent Citizen’s Redistricting Commission's responsible for drawing Congressional and state legislative districts?; (4) Would you support allowing independent and third party voters to vote in primary elections?; (5) Would you support allowing young people aged 16 and 17 the opportunity to pre-register to vote? (Voters must still be 18 or older to cast a ballot)? Something that was interesting to me was when I introduced myself and told a woman what I was there for and asked her if I could ask her questions she asked me what kinds of questions I had. I then told her I was with the Committee of 70 and that it was a non-partisan group, she then answered the questions. I thought this was interesting because she would most likely not have answered biased questions. Something else that I was excited about was that the voters knew how to answer the questions I asked and did not need a background to them. In Ward 21 I went to 4 different voting locations, Cook Wissahickon School, Andorra Branch Library, Houston Recreation Center, and Saul High School. I had the best experience at the Recreation Center because of the people that were also their outside of the polling office. They informed me and my group that there was an African-American male that was furiated with the Proposed Charter Change Question #3, which we decided was worded incorrectly and could be threatening when read by an African-American male but not threatening when someone from a differently ethnicity and/or background is reading it. There were only two people out of 24 would not stop and answer the questions which is a lot less than what I was expecting.

Street Art

The meaning of my art piece is that anything can be art.

There's really no meaning of the art I created

My art is inspired by the people who like doodle drawing.

I chose the location I did because I think it fit in with the other art that's on the wall

This project change my perception of art because I didn't now anything can be art.

This project really didn't change my perception of art I see while I travel around the city.

Street Art

The meaning of this art work that I have created is to love your natural hair and have confidence in your appearance no matter what race you are. I have always been natural, I never had a perm/relaxer but I never really like the texture of my hair. I had a hair type of 4c and it was very hard to handle so I started putting certain treatments in my hair to make it 4a/3c. This change made me have more confidence in wearing my hair in its natural state. This is what inspired me to draw my piece of art. I put my art in from of my advisory. I chose this location because I wanted the people that I will be going through high school with, to see something that represents who I am and understand me more. This project made me realize that most art have deeper meanings behind it that some people wont understand. When I travel around the city and I see street art I don't usually think about why the person drew what they drew and I just see the big picture and I don't get a deeper meaning of the art. Now that I have done this project and I understand art better I will try to analyze what the art means and the purpose of the art.

My H.O.P.E. Sign

I created a sign colored in the basic colors of the rainbow (roygbiv)  with the phrase "Hold On Pain Ends" leading across and down the square paper. The meaning of my piece is that even when times are hard and life seems stressful and hopeless, there is always hope around you somewhere. Then, when you dig deeper into the meaning of "hope," you find the idea/theme of the word (can be) hold on, pain ends, and that there is a light in your future, so don't give up. I included the rainbow background behind the phrase because in my opinion, rainbow's can represent opportunities and happiness that can appear in many forms, hence the multi colored patch. This ties together to show that hope is always around, and pops up in many different forms.

I am extremely into music, and I am always writing new song lyrics for myself. About a year ago, I decided to look up "life quotes" on google images to find inspiration for myself for a new song. That was when I came across a picture with the phrase "Hold On Pain Ends" and I immediately wrote it down because I thought it was genius! When Ms. Hertz explained to us what we were going to do for this mini project, I thought about the quote, and made the connection very suddenly to rainbows.

I chose to put my drawing/piece on the wall next to the door to the school store. I chose this location because I know that many students come by that area every day for the school store, as well as just to hang out, so I could be sure that my art would be seen by many.

I have realized that art doesn't have to be a drawing, it can be a phrase, or even a word, that has lots of meaning behind it.

There is much more art around Center City than I really realize.

Street Art

The meaning of my piece is that life and death are fragile like glass. Life is represented by the glass, and when it breaks it reveals the skeleton which represents death.

I was inspired by the way people think of death. I think people get too upset over it because they are scared of not knowing what really happens after you die.

I chose my location because I see it every day while at my locker, so that I can check up on it.

This project made me feel like it's something I can actually do.

This project didn't change my perception about it because I had already been obsessed with street art and graffiti

SkateRock Street Art

SkateRock is a rock band that I am in. It focuses on the two coolest things ever: Skateboarding and Rock Music.

Bands that inspired me to start SkateRock are: Green Day, Blink 182, Weezer, ACDC, Linkin Park, Sum 41, Good Charlotte, Paramore, and NOFX.

After drawing the SkateRock logo on the square we were given for the project I
chose a spot right next to a skateboarding poster in the hallway and put it up there. I thought this was an appropriate spot because of SkateRock's love for skateboarding.

This project made me realize that even something you drew that you thought was cool could be art.

I see a lot of street art around the city and this project made me appreciate it a lot more.

Election Day Experience

Campaign Experience

On 4/26/16 I volunteered on election day helping out the Committee of Seventy  for my very first time. I worked with my partner JaVon all morning talking to people and helping them with things they were unsure of. We walked around to four different polling places and collected ballots and took pictures and asked people survey questions. The first polling place we met at was on 50th & Spruce where there were lots of people standing at. Being in involved with helping with the election was a bit overwhelming because we are teenagers and don’t really know much about this stuff. We were around a lot of experienced people and didn’t want them to think that we didn’t know what we were doing. We kept calm and continued to do what we were told to do so at the end of the day we were ok. Beside being overwhelmed I felt like I was being a big help to our community and to the candidates and that was a really great feeling. Most teen don’t get the opportunity to get to put on their resume that they volunteered for an election and that is a very big deal. Even though I wasn’t receiving anything it was still a pleasure to help.  I enjoyed working with my partner because we were very helpful to one another and asked each other questions we were unsure of when helping other people. The only thing we didn’t get a chance to do was take pictures with candidates because we didn’t see any out there. That was what I looked forward to the most but maybe next time. I would like to do this again some other day. The only questions I have based off of my experience today is how do I read the ballot and understand it?  My second question is how do you register to vote once you reach the age of 18? My last question is how do those people get involved with being in charge of each polling place? Do they volunteer or is it an actual paying job?

Mulatto- Street Art

IMG_4580
IMG_4580
  • The meaning of my art work explains the mixture of my race white and black. This symbol represents that we are one whole whether we are black, white, Asian, etc.
  • What inspired my work was to be able to take race and bring it into art. With me doing this it will take the unknown necessary comments of race and difference and see it as one. As one artist known as Miss Mulatto, had a black and white parent. With her parents growing up and taking care of her was a struggle so with me creating this piece I imagining what sh faced.
  • I choose this location because it was at a very high spot where people would be able to notice it.
  • This project changed my perception because it took Street Art to a different level and to a different idea of Art. Instead of always using a paint brush and book, having a spray can and a street wall is the same.
  • It changed because I always looked at graffiti as graffiti I never once thought thee was a story behind it or had a meaning. I believe Street Art is Art.

Street Art

20160427_100015
20160427_100015
Meaning: The meaning behind my art piece is atheism and god.

Inspiration: My inspiration was a conversation I had with my friend. The conversation was about his life if god existed. The castle represents his life and the dragon represents god.

Location: I don't have a specific reason for why I picked the location I did.

Perspective: This project changed my perspective of art because I use to think that art was always paintings but now I know that that is only one part of art. It also changed my perspective around town because I use to think that it was all graffiti but now I know that some of it are murals.

Poesía Project

For the poem project, we had to pick a poem from a poet that was listed on the project description. Along with that there were many writing components. There was a summary for the poet, a short description for successes/achievements in your life, include the poem that you selected, write a short description of the themes in the poem, and write a poem of your own based off one or more of the themes in the poem.

I had some trouble writing everything in Spanish, but it ended fine. I had everything that was required. The poem was the most fun apart about the project. I enjoyed finding the themes and I enjoyed writing my own. I worked hard on this project, I think my grade should've been higher.

Mis padres trabajaron duro a criarme. Lograr éxito voluntad hacer mis padres feliz. Yo debo que a mis padres.

Un Poema de Mario Benedetti:

No lo creo todavía

estás llegando a mi lado

y la noche es un puñado

de estrellas y de alegría

palpo gusto escucho y veo

tu rostro tu paso largo

tus manos y sin embargo

todavía no lo creo

tu regreso tiene tanto

que ver contigo y conmigo

que por cábala lo digo

y por las dudas lo canto

nadie nunca te reemplaza

y las cosas más triviales

se vuelven fundamentales

porque estás llegando a casa

sin embargo todavía

dudo de esta buena suerte

porque el cielo de tenerte

me parece fantasía

pero venís y es seguro

y venís con tu mirada

y por eso tu llegada

hace mágico el futuro

y aunque no siempre he entendido

"Relaxing Bug" Street Art

IMAG0754 (1)
IMAG0754 (1)

My piece was inspired by the children's books that I read with my son. I wanted to create something that felt whimsical and imaginative.

I chose the location I did because I wanted it to look as though the insect was lounging in  a corner and I wanted it to be near my room.

I have been paying attention to the different styles of illustration in children's books and have really been thinking about how under-appreciated some children's book art is. I also thought about how an image can transport the viewer and also pique a viewer's interest in finding out more of the story. I like to imagine that there is a story being told in my drawing.

I am now paying attention to the varied styles of street art and I think more about the purpose behind the art that I see and the characters that artists create, similar to how children's book illustrators have to think about the characters that they are illustrating.

Viajar Project

For the Viajar project, we had to create a travel company and travel packages to go with them. The packages were of 5,7, and 9 days. You had to create a prezi/presentation that includes a total price of each package, where the people go, activities that are included in the package, flight times, and much more. A brochure that includes each package, a company logo,  and pictures. Lastly, you had to include a commercial advertising the company and packages.

I enjoyed creating this project for the most part. However, my group could have done better. We worked hard but not hard enough. Our grade for this project didn't fully represent how hard we worked. It had some flaws, but it was done well.

For this project we had to make a 3 day brochure for a trip to a Spanish speaking country. Though we had to make a 3 day travel plan we only had to go into detail about one. We as a group had to plan out what your full day would consist of with each plan including tours, food, and fun.

No te quedes inmóvil

al borde del camino

no congeles el júbilo

no quieras con desgana

no te salves ahora

ni nunca

 no te salves

no te llenes de calma

no reserves del mundo

sólo un rincón tranquilo

no dejes caer los párpados

pesados como juicios

no te quedes sin labios

no te duermas sin sueño

no te pienses sin sangre

no te juzgues sin tiempo

pero si

pese a todo

no puedes evitarlo

y congelas el júbilo

y quieres con desgana

y te salvas ahora

y te llenas de calma

y reservas del mundo

sólo un rincón tranquilo

y dejas caer los párpados

pesados como juicios

y te secas sin labios

y te duermes sin sueño

y te piensas sin sangre

y te juzgas sin tiempo

y te quedas inmóvil

al borde del camino

y te salves

entonces

no te quedes conmigo.

This is my poem project, for this project we had to research a Spanish-American poet and research enough information about that poet to write a biography. Following that we had to choose one of their poems take the key points/topics of the poem and create our own around the same topics.

This project was pretty easy to do and stressed the student's creativity while showing us new and possibly interesting poets.

Creating a Coffee Table/Charging Station

For the third quarter I was partnered with Louie. We decided to build a coffee table that contained a charging station to go in the new library that is being made. Our process was simple. First, we used a LucidPress chart to map out the custom measurements and how we wanted the table to fit together. Next, we used the makerspace to cut the various lengths of wood. For the legs, we connected them on either side closest to each other by using a reinforced triangle technique. This ensured the table was as strong as possible. For the picnic-style tabletop, we overlayed several long, vertical boards onto 3, shorter horizontal boards and glued them together. Then we took the two pairs of legs and the tabletop and put them together with nails of sufficient lengths. The final step was to put a power strip into the undercarriage of the table using velcro. This allows it to be removed or replaced if it malfunctions. Overall, this was an easy project and we had a ton of fun learning how to use the different tools.

Travel Project

Viajar con nosotros. This project is about creating a travel company, a travel package and a commercial to describe the travel company. We were given approximately 3 weeks to complete the project with a group. I feel that I completed this project very well given the time and group I worked with. We had to make minor adjustments with the group presentation, however we did very well.

This project was one of the hardest of the year. There was a lot of stress and some members of my group didn't work as hard. What was shocking was that my group actually got it done. For this, I actually felt proud that we were able to get it done on time.

Travel Project

For this project, we had to create and plan a trip to a Spanish-speaking country of our choice. My group decided to choose Panama, and we worked together very well. Although each person in the group had a specific role, we still all worked together very nicely.

This is my quarter 3 project for Spanish. For this project, we as in my group had to plan a 3-day trip, the this includes the flight ticket, the hotel, the activities, the restaurants, and much more. I had to bring my A game on in order to pass the project we a perfect grade but also I had to not let my groupmate and myself down. The country that we had picked  was Lima Peru, we had to create a brochure, a video and a powerpoint base on all of our research. Planning this trip had seemed to open my eyes because I had time to see how much money everything had added up too. Overall I would say this project was a success because I and my groupmate had put the time and the effect into our work to get it done on time and did pretty good on the presentation.

Travel Project

I enjoyed the project because if my group very funny and it was entertaining that's it and plus we got the job done. The priority was pretty easy to nothing to hard that I could not have figured out. I think it was cool and nice to find a country and act like we are tour guides and all of that so the project was not completely bored to do. The process was still long cause we had to find a lot if information.
