For me and Justyce project we decided to do a Talent Show. We were advocating for this talent show to happen because these past couple of years of living in a pandemic have been challenging for many of us all. I’m sure many are still trying to process everything that has occurred along with dealing with grief & loss. We believe that having this talent show will be refreshing, promote positive school spirit, uplift & support one another, and bring many together socially again. We can’t erase the past as we know but we can do our best to move forward and begin to enjoy life again. This is also our last year at SLA so we thought why not leave on a fun positive note and doing something that would benefit the school in a positive way. In doing this capstone we ran into some challenges because although covid has gotten better we are still enduring some complications hence having the talent show. Throughout this processed one of our complications was trying to find a date to have our talent show. After the many complications of finding a date because of covid we decided that doing this talent show we had to change some things around making this talent show an unusual one. So, we turned our show into a virtual talent show allowing students to turn in videos of their talent and we turned those videos into one big video.

My original purpose was to complete an internship at Penn to assist primarily African-American children in learning and playing lacrosse. Furthermore, depending on the activities and when they might need my assistance, I’ve planned to visit Penn once or twice a week to serve as a student coach. By traveling to Penn after school every Tuesday and, if possible, Friday, I’ve used my time and resources to work on the project. Furthermore, I’ve made the most of my tools, including my phone to track progress, my voice to assist in coaching during practices and games, and my collaboration abilities while engaging with the staff and kids. Moreover interacting with children helps me to be able to see the more broad perspective of how the lessons taught to younger children stick with them all throughout their lives and I’m more than happy to be a part of it. Furthermore, connecting with children allows me to have a broader understanding of how the lessons imparted to younger children linger with them throughout their lives, and I’m delighted to be a part of it.

For my capstone, I decided to create a podcast composed of film reviews. This project aimed to answer the question “How can I learn to give a meaningful critique of movies, that would challenge people to think more critically about the media they engage with?” I started working on it in February. I did one episode every week. First I would watch a film, usually on the weekends, then I would write out some bullet points of things I wanted to talk about. On Wednesday, I would record audio and start editing. I would finish editing and publish the episode on the weekends. I managed to create a total of 16 episodes. They range in length from 6 to 20 minutes. From this project, I learned a bit about audio editing, thought not as much as I would have liked. I also learned a lot about how to think about and critique films. This project also helped me hone my verbal communication skills and taught me to better express my thoughts and feelings.

Learning Through Passion (Capstone)

My senior capstone was my class: Learning Through Passion. Every Wednesday, I would go to the Powell School and teach what was essentially an introduction to Anthropology, Psychology, and Philosophy. A huge anxiety of mine is that the kids wouldn´t like the material, I wanted to make sure they could have fun, and that they could make the class about them. So my guiding question became How can I make a class for them that they can learn from and appreciate. What I learned from my capstone is that a lot goes into a class, but something that became highly apparent is that when working with students, I needed to be transparent and relatable, yet firm.

For my senior capstone, I partnered up with Enijah. We wanted to give back to the community but not by just giving them money. We want them to feel good about themselves and be happy. I know there are a lot of people around the world who don’t have a lot. They may not have homes, food, toiletries, and also they may not get exercise and we felt like everyone should be able to get out on their feet and also get something to eat. So me & Enijah decided to have a community walk where anyone could join & also have an event to feed the homeless where they could get some food & also get toothbrushes & toothpaste to clean up.

Reflecting on my project, I learned that I could further explore my creative side. My end goal was to share my journey with the young creatives who will come through our school or simply see my project. l shared various tips as I encountered them along the way of building up my two brands. Taking note of the things I see on the daily helped improve the creativity aspect in terms of the brand and just brainstorming in general. I used networking to find out different manufacturers and vendors for material and printing. Even getting small feedback from potential customers such as family and friends helped. Concluding this project and going forward with my brands and my development as a fashion designer, I have to say the most important key to all of this is simply patience.

Sanai Browning - Dance Runs the World

Our project is a sign of many things, including history, sisterhood, black culture, dance, and more. In a mini-course, Salena and I decided to teach black girls dance routines, and we also taught them the history of dance throughout black culture. We also decided to teach the students about the history of dance in short lessons. We have taught two different routines, each with its own style and level of difficulty. We are very proud of our students for being able to learn these routines and show their style and individuality at every rehearsal. I can’t wait to find out what they will do next. They have also come up with a routine on their own, based on the five values we teach them at every rehearsal. We have also had a lot of discussions where we talk about things going on in our community and how they affect our dance lives and lives in general. We are always firm about how we talk about these issues so that our students know they can speak up and use their voices to make a difference in their communities. Change has been brought about in many ways, and dance is one of them. We want our students to feel proud of themselves and care about each other and themselves. As teachers, we have worked hard and made mistakes from time to time, but our students show that the hard work we have done has paid off. We hope that what we taught them has stuck with them.

Many aspects are represented in our project, including history, sisterhood, black culture, dancing, and more. Sanai and I agreed to teach black female dance routines as part of a mini-course, as well as the history of dance in black culture. We also decided to give the pupils short lectures on the history of dancing. We’ve demonstrated two separate routines, each with its own style and difficulty level. We are quite proud of our pupils for their ability to learn these routines and demonstrate their personality and style at each rehearsal. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do next. They’ve also devised their own routine based on the five ideals we teach them at each practice. We’ve also had numerous discussions regarding events in our town and how they affect our dance life, as well as our lives in general. We are always forceful in how we discuss these topics with our students so that they understand they can speak up and utilize their voices to make a difference in their communities. Dance is one of the numerous ways that change has been brought about. We want our pupils to be proud of themselves and to be concerned about one another. As teachers, we have worked hard and made mistakes, but our kids have demonstrated that our efforts have paid off. We hope that they remember what we told them.

I am formally introducing myself, I am Othello Kwaku Amo Adjepong, I’m a 18 year old Ghanian American academic scholar, who is a gifted visual artist and a track runner. The son of Howard University graduates. Currently I am a upperclassman at (SLA Beeber) Science Leadership Academy at Beeber., who is currently an active member of many programs,Ctrl shift sponsored by Dell, Project Lyft Sponsored by Philadelphia Work Ready ,Cap program Sponsored by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc, 100 Black Men of Philadelphia ,Penn (RSSA) Penn Rising Scholar Success Academy, UKG INC,USATF Track & Field, AAU Track & Field. I want to research programs that satisfy my quest for majoring in a field that I can be passionate about. I believe that I can gain a broader perspective on the college experience, get to meet other young people who share my zest for technology and social media and participate in a program that will allow me challenge my knowledge and learn something new. I am constantly searching for youtube videos, tutors and apps that will help me understand a math problem. However, I know that I have to put in the extra work to accomplish my goal and at my high school there are several teachers and resources to assist me in math. Not every student, especially black and brown students, are able to receive the needed support to make them feel confident in science and math. Hence, I believe this has a major impact on why there is a lack of diversity within the STEM community. Artificial intelligence is intelligence demonstrated by machines, as opposed to the natural intelligence displayed by animals including humans. In the next few years, AI will become an important part of our lives reaching the level of super intelligent machines to exceed human intellect. Some examples include opening the door of your hotel room without a key, but through facial recognition. This will become more efficient for humans. products delivered by smaller drones straight to your doorstep within minutes of placing an order. Companies save time and effort by automating their business processes and enable their employees to work more productively. A variety of AI software tools are used to make the business process much simpler and more effective. For example, software that recommends products to users in an e-commerce shop, chatbots, software that automates content marketing creating, tools that predict sales, etc. There’s no doubt that AI is a technology that will transform every business, every company, in every industry. Every future-oriented business needs an AI understanding and an AI strategy. Your AI strategy will help you achieve your business goals and create strong competitive advantages.AI has many benefits and applications in business. It powers customer service, ensures cybersecurity defense, performs data analysis, helps in customer care, reduces energy costs, predicts sales, helps businesses to be more customer-centric, etc.

I create this project in hopes that it could inspire anyone that listens to it to become more active in the activism world and not just follow the trends of society. Want today’s generation and the future generations to know what activism really is and how much it can change society’s opinion on a certain topic. With everything happening in the world today I think we need some real activism that is willing to fight public figures and politicians for the things we need as citizens and as people. My podcast The New Activism will address the many different types of activism and how today’s generation has kinda changed the meaning of activism.

For my capstone, I recorded a music album about my senior year. I have been making music since I was a sophomore and decided this album would accurately represent my ideas for this project. I decided to name the album “The Senior Tape” and that it would consist of 10 songs with one of those songs being a feature from another senior in high school. Throughout the project, I had to change up my ideas in order to fit a budget as my original idea to create a concert would’ve costed more than I would wanted it to. Overall, this album was very fun to make and can benefit the community by showing people that you can do anything you put your mind to. This album will be available on Soundcloud and Youtube May 27th.

Capstone Project

Hello everyone, This project has been the culmination of my 4 years in high school and rowing. I have had a hard journey discovering myself and rowing is what helped me find what I love and what I’m good at. This past year I have done the most in my sport as I have ever done to prep for rowing in college next year. I have competed in harder races and have become a regional champion and hope to do well in The national regatta in June. However, this project wasn’t about me it was about helping others. Rowing is one of the only things I love making it easy to decide that I wanted to help other people find it and love it as much as I do. For my project, I mentored a young and new rower as well as started a cycle of other people helping out and talking with younger athletes.

Hi! This is my final product for my capstone. Here is a mental health awareness box. Over the years of being at SLA, I discover how important mental health is through journaling and talking with my peers. Coming back from a pandemic and being brought back to in-class teaching it became harder for teachers and students to help build back that communication of engaged learning. I myself struggled with interacting and being engaged in class because of my mental health. Therefore I created a distraction box and anonymous box that I hope will be used by the community of SLA in the future years to come.

The guiding question that my capstone followed was how are we able to give advice to younger students trying to navigate high school? We wanted to share our experiences with how the reality of high school is actually very different from what we see on television and in movies. The way we went about this process is firstly we wanted to make it longer and include more, but we felt like we should just make it about our experiences and made it the highlight. We created two parts talking about our experiences and we talked about multiple topics in them. I felt like in the end, we learned that high school isn’t going to be perfect like there will be ups and downs, but it was experience that made us who we are today.

I wanted to make it more teen based because I felt like not a lot of teen have representation, especially POC. The idea was a podcast because I feel like as humans we don’t know how to communicate. It is always assuming that we know what others want from us. I think that is a reason why our issues have not been solved. I want to touch people in a way that they have never been touched before. I know that the only challenge is getting people to engage. I see that because we undermine mental health and recovery, we are stuck in the mindset of shaming and feeling embarrassed. It is not something that you shouldn’t be proud of. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1gxNrSjXDHtpkXPXq0H1zrdbm_2xVUfP22TYuYsnHo4A/edit

Being a student is hard. I see teachers and other people in leading positions, fleetingly mention the importance and presence of a personal life as a student. I rarely see people actually pay attention to it and break down the struggle of balancing your life at home and at school. This struggle is especially difficult as an older sibling because there are more responsibilities that include taking care of yourself and other people (your siblings). I took one of the main challenges I face to focus on and decided to give advice to other students that are in my position. I created a platform where all the information about the struggle and resources on how to better maintain would be incorporated into a website. This idea is the third I had for a capstone but happened to be my last. I am satisfied with my final project and how well it ties into my personal life and literally most of what I have had to deal with throughout my years of schooling. My capstone was based on mental health. Together Milah and I wanted to make a difference for kids we saw mentally struggling in school. We noticed over time that due to quarantine, the attitudes of our peers around us have entirely shifted, which even took a toll on our lives. So from there, our essential question became “How can we make school more comforting when it comes to mental health?” At first, the initial response was to make a mini-course so that people could talk. After much research, I realized that everyone isn’t comfortable speaking in a group so we created an anonymous google form that people can talk to and get responses from one of us. We want to continue it once we graduate because mental health is too important to take lightly. We also did interviews throughout the year talking to kids in the school about how they felt. Overall I feel like we learned a lot about how education can affect our mental health and methods to soothe the stress

My capstone was based around the question “how does one person in a community cause a positive effect on the rest of the community?” As I went through the process I was able to finally do something which could benefit me, my community, and others watching me. I decided to create mini vlogs showing what it’s like helping other people watch their children. I was able to gather up some kids on the weekend who I normally watch and keep them for a few hours. Sometimes I charge and other times I did it for free. The people provide for the children and I provide everything else such as food, snacks, somewhere to sleep, somewhere to play, toys, etc. Through this experience, I was able to see that at some point parents need help as well. It’s not always easy taking care of a child by yourself. Showing people around me that they have support no matter what was the biggest takeaway from this project. I was able to grow more bonds that I never knew I would’ve had before. Being able to gain a new level of trust with parents and children just shows that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

My capstone was centered around the following guiding questions, What ways can we better support young entrepreneurs? What information can we help entrepreneurs obtain that’ll benefit their business skills? In what ways can we bring together young entrepreneurs and make them collaborate? 2 of my classmates and I, who also have businesses of our own, hosted a “Boss Brunch” at Merion Botanical Park where we found vendors that were interested in marketing, networking, and socializing with other young entrepreneurs. Having to find a place for the event, vendors, speakers, a caterer, and get a permit for the park. We charged a $25 vending fee and used the money to pay for tables, chairs, decorations and other things we needed. Providing food and drinks, allowing every business to set up and sell their items and also gain words of encouragement from a few experienced entrepreneurs we found through social media and personal connections. There was also a photographer who captured all the memorable moments at our boss brunch. I learned that even the most successful people have been at the point I’m at now. Everyone left supporting new businesses they didn’t know before the brunch, exchanging social media handles and creating connections that are continuing to last after the brunch. Bringing the young entrepreneur community together and allowing them to connect with each other is the best way to support them because you relate to a group of people just like you and help uplift and support each other.

My original idea was to teach younger students binary so they can use it to show off. But later I changed it to just helping the 5th graders with coding instead. I teach at the Powell center which is where the other SLA is and I teach the 5th, 6th and 7th graders coding. I have been doing this project for about 2 quarters now and I kind of get the hang of how things work. Since I didn’t start a work log in quarter 2 I can’t really say anything. My work log for quarter 3 consisted of me noting down people’s progress and where they were at in terms of the assignments that I gave them which was to make a game. The website that I was using was from my computer science teacher and I have been using it ever since. I have told them to start with 3 tutorials before trying to make their own game. The first tutorial runs with the basics and what they are familiar with, which are the blocks. The second tutorial is the coding that I have been taught which is python. It’s kind of a step up from the last tutorial but it’s nothing major. The last tutorial is kind of the same as the last tutorial but it’s a different method. So for the entire marking period I have been directing and using the website so that the students can get the hang of it.
