My original idea was to teach younger students binary so they can use it to show off. But later I changed it to just helping the 5th graders with coding instead. I teach at the Powell center which is where the other SLA is and I teach the 5th, 6th and 7th graders coding. I have been doing this project for about 2 quarters now and I kind of get the hang of how things work. Since I didn’t start a work log in quarter 2 I can’t really say anything. My work log for quarter 3 consisted of me noting down people’s progress and where they were at in terms of the assignments that I gave them which was to make a game. The website that I was using was from my computer science teacher and I have been using it ever since. I have told them to start with 3 tutorials before trying to make their own game. The first tutorial runs with the basics and what they are familiar with, which are the blocks. The second tutorial is the coding that I have been taught which is python. It’s kind of a step up from the last tutorial but it’s nothing major. The last tutorial is kind of the same as the last tutorial but it’s a different method. So for the entire marking period I have been directing and using the website so that the students can get the hang of it.

My Capstone was, well it was certainly an interesting one. I decided to make mocktails (cocktails but with no alcohol) for it and it was certainly an interesting process. The question I had asked for it was rather broad, “What does it take to create something others will enjoy?” And, well it takes effort, but also knowledge. The goal of this was to create something for people and the exact thing has evolved over time. In fact, most recently I’ve had help getting a website created. At the time of writing it’s still very much in progress but I do hope for it to become something more and for the ideas I have to become reality. I made various recipes for different drinks and hopefully will add new drinks, add some deserts and the like to this site, heck, I eventually even hope to possibly even make the café real. So, while I’m not sure I can answer the question of what it takes to make things people enjoy, I can sure as heck do my best to make something that many can enjoy, especially if it’s a safe space for my siblings in the LGBTQ+ community. Anyway, as of current the site won’t be findable without a link until I get the bits sorted out.

Speaking of which:

For my project, I will create an Ep. As well as a video/Documentary titled “Music with a Message”. As African Americans, we live in times where we have to voice our emotions and not be silenced. We have things like social media and politics helping others to push certain narratives and shut others out. So I will answer the question “How is music used in our communities?” For that, we have music artists like Tupac, Common, Kendrick Lamar, Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill, and many others who use their platforms to spread messages that the average person can’t. It has helped the African American community in numerous ways. Their music brings awareness to police brutality, sexual assault, racism/discrimination, rape, suicide, feminism/sexuality, and much more.

Project handprint -Patrick Christopher Hannon Capstone Mr.Roy

I had to give an overview of what my project is it is project and print just a handprint that my class of 2022 will leave behind each of them signing off their name to start a new beginning and to show the new world that they have left behind it’s something that they will be remembered by but as well talked about as kids walk to the hall and seeing the mural I’ve made for my class they will remember the great memories that we had left behind as well as the great story but she’ll be bold some of the great things that some of we’ll talk about where the memories that we shared after school. most of all some of the biggest things is the handprint that we left for the classes and the community of SLA Beeber. As the year goes on I will come back to visit this and see what has been made of it will a new classmate create another one for the class of 23 or shall I be remembered as the one thing a class has left behind am I past years being here at Beaver I don’t remember a class that has left something behind for the other classes to look at or remember so I believe I will be starting a new beginning with this a new idea to remember the classes that had been at SLA Bebber.

Picking the right topic for me for my capstone was difficult. I ended up not coming to a final decision until March which was pretty late considering how much time I’ve had. By that time I had decided to do my capstone on the paid internship, I participated in. The internship was called LincABLE. This internship taught me about financial literacy and networking. In terms of financial literacy, an example would be putting 10% away in a retirement fund when you can every paycheck. My process to complete this capstone was not as hard as I initially intended. The biggest part of this was me being able to apply myself and really give my all for this experience. You get out what you put in they always say. I want to voice that any rising seniors that have nothing to do from February to May should participate in this program. I completely recommend and will tell you that you will most definitely get something out of it. Linked is a podcast done by my team during the program.

For my senior capstone project, I fixed and modified my scooter. At first, I was struggling to come up with a good capstone, but when Mr. Larry recommended that I fix the scooter, it was the perfect idea. Because I do not have independence in the wheelchair, the scooter is a necessity for my everyday living. At first, we switched out the battery. Then, the scooter was still moving slow, so Mr. Larry figured out that it could be the potentiometer, a piece behind the drive select lever that translates movement to the motor. When we replaced the potentiometer with a new one, everything worked great. The scooter was wearing and tearing, and it was plastic. Then, we tried to replace the plastic with wood. Lastly, we spray painted the scooter black, because it looked ugly.

While I could have replaced the scooter with a new one, fixing it was fun, inexpensive and more customizable. Also, I learned how the scooter functions. Fixing the scooter needed a lot of problem solving. It is inexpensive because the problem was in the potentiometer, and the batteries and replacing those cost less than replacing the whole thing. To customize, we had to be creative and figure out material and placement on parts of the scooter. I am happy with the product that I got, because now I could maneuver on my own.

Environmental Justice PSA

Basically, the major theme of our film was lead poisoning, and it was more of a pros and cons discussion. The explanation for why we chose to focus on the issue of lead poisoning was that I joined the group after the topic was chosen since I was a bit behind. Furthermore, I accomplished recording and being recorded on the subject of lead poisoning while portraying facts and statistics about the issue. Moreover, there were other things I might have done differently, such as being more productive within the group while the majority of the members were absent, as well as contributing to the editing process. Finally, the most rewarding aspect of crafting the PSA was being able to convey the facts and statistics that accompanied it while working together on the mini-project.

Environmental Science Public Service Announcement

Aliou, Shimaar, Vincent, as well as myself have created a miniature public service anouncement for our project. We chose to cover the topic of lead poisoning in the inner city because we live in a large city that has a problem with lead paint being used in house that are unfit to live in. This is the most prevelant issue in the life of inner city kids right next to overheating of living spaces. Our video was created with short production time due to 2 people being sick with covid for a week and one member suffering an injury. We got to learn about this issue while recording it as another teacher gave us examples and facts about lead poisoning as well as the dangers of mercury. We hope you enjoy the video and stay safe. 😎💯🤝🏾🤞🏾❗️👁👁

PSA: Heat

Our video went over extreme heat problems in suburban areas and how that affects the community. I thought this was a good idea because, during the summer, my room drags in and contains heat. This is a problem that a lot of people face. My group talked about how the problem could be fixed with minimal effort. I think my group did well with picking locations to film in. The most meaningful part of making this PSA was talking about a problem I know first hand.

PSA:Plastic Pollution

We decided to do a project on plastic waste and pollution because we feel like it’s an important topic. People throw bottles away without even thinking about it and we would like to bring awareness to that. I feel like I did well creating the dialogue for the PSA, I just wish I wouldve done more research on the subject. It was very meaningful to work together with my classmates as the year ends.

Plastic Waste PSA

The contents of our video include examples and facts about plastic waste. Plastic waste is basically masses of mismanaged waste over oceans and land. I chose this topic because it’s simple and interesting. I did well by editing the video. I wouldn’t do anything differently because I put effort into the PSA. The most meaningful part of the PSA was my group’s collaborative effort to complete it.

Water Pollution PSA Sanai w.

Unsafe water kills more people each year than all other forms of violence combined. Water quality issues affect aquatic creatures, plants, and mammals directly. Water is a basic need as well as a major environmental issue that we deal with on a daily basis. Water is life, and we must safeguard it for the sake of the health of our ecosystem and our own personal health. I chose this topic because I thought it would be easy to research and already had prior knowledge on it. I wouldn’t really change anything but make more animations for my video.

Je'dah and Cierra's Environmental Science PSA

Our PSA is about Food Scarcity and Food Injustices. This was a topic that interested us both due to the fact that we both live in neighborhoods that don’t have immediate access to healthy food options. We feel like creating a PSA on this topic will bring light to the importance of having healthy food options in or a least close to neighborhoods that need it.

PSA VIDEO

Our video went over extreme heat problems in suburban areas and how that affects the community. I thought this topic was good as it isn’t one that gets as much attention in the world of environmental justice and sometimes people forget why it happens other than just climate change. We talked about mostly how things could get better if we take better care of our vegetation and plant trees in these environments. I think we could have had a more consistent filming session and better timing on that so editing could be more concise for sure. I think the best part about making the PSA is the sense of accomplishment for sure. Even though there were some bumps along the way I’m pretty impressed with what I could conjure given the circumstances of me having to be sick.

Environmental Justice PSA

Our PSA was about plastic pollution. We thought this was a good topic because of how serious the problem is. I think it’s also good to tell people what is happening around them to be more conscious of their actions and make changes. If I could change something about our PSA it would be to make it with clips and videos instead of me just talking.

Plastic Pollution

In our video, we briefly discussed plastic pollution, what it is, its cause, and potential solutions along with things that have already been done. This topic was one that we believe needed more representation outside of what is normally shown involving recycling while most people are unaware of what happens after your trash is allegedly recycled. The concept of our PSA was done well it served as a way for us to get our message across and to create something that would have the potential to be shown nationally as a true PSA through an Instagram story. Something that could’ve been done better was potentially referencing the exact ways that people have tried to remove the ocean from the waters. I would say the most meaningful for me was coming up wth the idea of how we were going to do our PSA.

Final Submission: Environmental Justice PSA

My group’s PSA is an air pollution warning in the format of an apocalypse. We chose this topic because we originally wanted to study the harm of fast fashion brands, i.e., SHEIN. However, that wasn’t a large impact on our country. So, we decided to settle for air pollution. I did well with planning the outline of the video. When we were given class time to work on the project, I remained diligent to complete the task at hand. I also served as a reporter within our PSA. In terms of doing things differently, I should’ve tried better at keeping my group on task. During class time, my group members were off task. In addition, we didn’t feel an urgency to complete this project. So, maybe we should’ve spent more time brainstorming how we could’ve made the PSA the best it could possibly be. The most meaningful part about creating the PSA was that this could be real life if we don’t take action now. Even though we tried to add humorous elements to the video, it could all happen in a matter of years. Overall, this was a fun project to make, and I’ll miss doing creative projects like this after graduation.

Samadi Bryan - Air Pollution PSA

The video is a PSA on air pollution disguised as a dramatized apocalyptic world caused by increased air pollution. I chose this topic because I think it’s important to discuss because this is an issue that affects not just all of us but especially those most susceptible and vulnerable to it. What I liked most about making this PSA was going with the apocalyptic style. I’ve recently been into apocalypse scenarios and I really wouldn’t hold anything against someone who believed this could actually happen. What I think could have been done better is time could have been managed better, but despite that, we all came through and our project came out great.

Food Insecurity PSA

This video is split into 2 parts about Sanai, Ainyah, and Walsend’s issues with food insecurity and their actual experiments. They also discuss what politicians (their target audience) could be doing to help citizens in Philadelphia gain better access to healthy, affordable food. I feel that the video itself is done well. I wish we could have made it a bit shorter to make it all one video but we wanted to give you all a full experience. The most meaningful part to me was our discussions. It really gives our perspectives on what we feel needs to be done and how it should be carried out to affect all citizens.

Lucas Drinen - Air Pollution PSA

Air pollution is one of humanity’s biggest threats. Everyone will feel the effects of air pollution, especially those in poor countries. Air pollution is one of the world’s largest social justice issues. People of color and low-income people are disproportionately affected. Our video touched on a dramatized version of what might happen if air pollution worsens. We also talked about which countries are most vulnerable, and what we can do to resolve this issue. Our PSA was entertaining and provided very important information. Everyone should be aware of the statistics provided. We are glad that we were able to educate everyone on the effects of air pollution. It’s important that everyone is aware of how environmental and social justice are connected.

Asbestos PSA

In this video, Malik develops severe health conditions because of asbestos, and dies in the hospital because of it. The hospital also has problems with asbestos, and the doctor also becomes asbestos. We chose to make our project on asbestos because we felt like we didn’t fully understand it, so we wanted to learn more about it. We created a very good video, with a fun plot, but I wish we had done more research on asbestos.

The most meaningful part of the experience was filming the video and doing the acting.

Asbestos PSA

Our video shows the dangers of asbestos in older buildings. We chose asbestos as our topic because we thought that it isn’t talked about much, definently in school. For our video, we made a short film that personified asbestos into an actual person/murderer. One thing I wish we would’ve done differently is try to all come together with our ideas before filming, however I do think improvising was the best part of our video.
