Q4 Project Tech
Q1 Overview
I wasn’t here first quarter, I went to lower merion. At lower merion, there was a lot white people and they would always follow me around and say ‘yup Leon’. Throughout my journey at lower merion I did not enjoy. The people there were very awkward and the school day was very boring. I wasn’t challenged much so I didn’t much work. In short Lower Merion sucked.
Q2 Overview
So Coming into sla during quarter 2 I had decided to work on a video. In this video I would make a combo video of me and friends playing super smash brothers melee!!!! In the combo video my aim was to make everyone look sick and good(we aren’t). Unfortunately recording clips on your phone makes the footage look like it was made in 2006. Get a capture card if you can. The video was a pretty good success, I liked the way it panned out.
Q3 Overview
In quarter 3 I did a image editing project. In this project I wanted to highlight the time period in which Leffen was just winning all the tournaments. I decided to take inspiration from Nega Scott’s ending in Scott Pilgrim vs the World the Game.I put Leffen’s face over Nega Scott who was what the picture was about and it was perfect since Leffen is the “Villain” of the community. I put the Gods of melee over the main characters face since they were pretty much unstoppable until Leffen showed up and beat them all.
Revised Project
I decided to go back to my quarter 2 project since I liked it a lot and really enjoyed making it. I couldn’t really salvage footage due to unfortunate circumstances of my memory card with all the footage being stolen. Knowing this I decided to add special effects to some portions of the project and try my best to make it more aesthetically appealing. This proved difficult and I think that at a later
Highpoint
A high point for me was definitely gathering the footage for my combo video. It was an increasingly fun experience and playing my friends was great as well. Overall it was a good way to play and play with a purpose.
Area of Growth
An area of growth would be completing my work in a timely fashion and getting better quality footage. This needs to get better because frankly, the class is easy and fun so there shouldn’t be a reason to not have an A. I also don’t want my footage to look like it was filmed on a potato so a capture card or something that will get footage better would be great

When I think about my future the first thought that comes to mind is how much I want to be a veterinarian. The feeling you get when you help an animal is so priceless and beautiful. In the United States alone there is an estimate of 70 million stray animals. Let me repeat that… 70 MILLION. This opportunity that my capstone has given me was directed towards my future. For my capstone, I decided that I wanted to help these animals in any way that I could. In Philadelphia, there are stray cats found everywhere… especially where I live. I decided that throughout the school year I would document how I helped them through journal entries, pictures, and video footage. In my neighborhood alone there's about 11 cats that I feed daily and the story to how I acquired all these is amazing. The time, money and effort that I have put into taking care of these animals are evident throughout these journals. Every two weeks I buy a $15 24 pound bag of cat food, and throughout the school year, I've bought blankets, houses, boxes and food trays for them. I spend time with the cats and treat them like my own honestly. If my father weren’t deadly allergic to cats I would probably adopt two of them. I hope that through these journals and pictures you can see how the cats I take care of impacted me. Especially my last journal. Down below you’ll find journal entries scattered throughout the months.

For my project, I made a book of short stories and poetry. The reason I chose this specific way to do my project is because writing is definitely one of my stronger points and one of my passions other than music. Poetry is a creative way for me to express myself using words when I can’t adequately verbalize my feelings to others and the world. When I met up with my mentor Ms. Fanning, I had told her that I wanted to make a book of short stories and poetry. She helped and guided me through making it. At first, she had suggested that I make a Chicken Soup for the Soul kind of book and I agreed with her on that suggestion but I just figured to make a chapbook. A chapbook is a small book ranging from 20-40 pages consisting of poems and short stories. I chose this simply for the fact that it aligns with my strengths and it was fun. This has made me learn how to expressively and creatively use words and structure them the way I want to help express my emotions and experiences to others.

During the early years of high school I was a lonely child. Although I was very friendly at the time and had no trouble finding friends, I found trouble confiding in them and I felt unable to speak my mind. This had led me to begin writing as a way to express these emotions. I had continued to write, but slowed down in my sophomore year of high school, due to learning the skill of woodworking/carpentry. For the first time in my life I was able to create something tangible from absolutely nothing but an image in my mind. That was something I had never experienced before this point. It was liberating in so many ways, and it led me to other practices such as electronics, drawing, painting, and so much more. However in my junior year I had begun to deal with some very personal problems, and my family life became very chaotic. It was once again difficult for me to express myself and I had lost focus on what I wanted in life. That changed, but only after I had found my old writings, because I had begun to understand what writing used to do for me mentally. Eventually I had pulled myself from a very dark place through writing, and that collection of writings was meant to be my capstone in the form of a book. This vision had to change, since the writings were all more or less separate they have to be organized and tweaked so that they flow as a cohesive book. I do want to complete this project, even if it takes me thirty years to do so. The collection of writings are just very personal and have to be edited very delicately before I can comfortably release them for everyone to see. But since this is my senior project I knew I had to have something completed, so I decided to create a blog. So that I may post as I complete the pieces and so I can organize them as I release them. The first blog post will be posted, and read as part of my capstone presentation. Feel free to add your input on any posts, and welcome to my first attempt at a blog. Any updates will be noted in future posts.

This year for my final SLA capstone, I decided to crochet a few hats and a scarf to donate to CHOP. This was a really cool thing to do because not only was I able to learn how to crochet and teach some of my peers, it sort of felt like a social experiment. In a day and age where everything is changing so rapidly, it’s hard to assume who’s going to be doing what. Many people are going out of their ways as activists to break down social constructs in order for people to freely express themselves and be comfortable while doing so. I’ve been knitting basic rectangular scarves on and off again since the 4th grade. Ever since then and even now, people would jokingly call me a grandma or old lady for knitting and crocheting. I’ll usually laugh along with them without a care in my mind. I personally appreciate those women older than me who were patient and willingly to teach me these creative stitching methods. I think that this could be an important skill to have if you wanted to stretch your entrepreneurial skills and sell your products or just to make winter hats yourself and save money. I personally enjoyed crocheting because it relaxed me and was so easy to do and easy to travel with.

For our Capstone project, I thought it would only be right if I focus on animals because I am going to college to be a veterinary nurse and Kashia believes animals should have an equal opportunity to a good life just like us. For our project, we decided to challenge the concept that zoos aren’t good for animals by making a video to help people really look at how zoos make animals feel. We assume that since animals cannot talk we know what’s best for them and can make decisions for them. That is incorrect. Animals come from a different world than we do and have their own lives to live.
We cannot put them in any environment to help accommodate for what we want all the time. That is why Kashia and I went to our local zoo, the Philadelphia Zoo, to observe the animal's behavior when put into a room to be observed by the public. When observing certain animals like primates, I noticed that most of them looked rather sad and bored living in there. While others like lions and tigers, who live in an open space outside were a little aggressive. Watching the animals lay in the little habitats made me feel really dead inside. Especially, seeing the polar bear outside on a partially cool day, living alone. He wasn’t happy just like most of the animals there. That is why we say no to the created creation and preservation of zoos.

I would like to start off by saying that I do not have a passion, a dream, nor something that my heart is set on pursuing in life. Though I am good at many things there is only one thing that I can honestly say I would never get tired of, that would be doing hair. I getting better at it but before I show you my work I want you to know that I try my best at everything I do. I cannot work in the shop, the money that I made went to a foster care system called Turning Points for Children.
For my project I made a hair portfolio. People would come to the shop and get their hair done by me. I learned a lot about doing hair while working in the shop. I met a lot of new people and I learned the ways of business. This experience is helping me decide on what I want to do with my life. My final project is allowing me to look back on the work that I have done and improve on it. The project is also showing me whether I am either good or bad and what I can do better.

Abstract:
For my capstone what I decided to make was a book. The purpose of this book was to be entertaining yet possess some information regarding things that could happen to our world if we did not take care of it. To most people this could seem like a simple task but a good amount of research was needed in order to picture how the future would look if say, we don't take action on global warming. I first started out by attempting to write the book without any outline and it was horrible. But that helped me realize I needed to act as if I never knew about the book and that was I made an actual outline to remember what to say next. Through the creation of this book I learned how to describe a setting better and how to blend in information with a form of entertainment. Even if it was tedious due to all the editing that was involved I found it fun and hopefully others will like this book and think about our environmental issues more.

An efficient peer to peer mentorship program is something that is very challenging to organize. Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way, over the course of the nine months which I had to organize my very own peer to peer mentorship program. Sadly the mentorship program which I have organized with only two members who were actually fully able to participate isn’t what I expected it to become. All the beneficial principles still apply to the outcome of an efficient peer to peer mentorship program, members both mentees and mentors of the program still develop communication and self-advocacy skills. However, the approach we take to starting the program can ultimately determine its consistency and success. In other words the program I organized tended to have a majority of senior upperclassman participating as mentors, which was ideal at the time because these students had the most high school experience. However high school seniors at Science Leadership Academy At Beeber tend to have a full plate with applying to colleges, working on their capstone projects, and just keeping up with the usual load of school work they have. So I found that not many mentors had the time to meet weekly with their mentees. Another issue was that the way I started the program; it could have been much better in terms of the process in choosing mentors and mentees to participate. Originally mentors would have to go through mentor training to have a mentee but including this within the program is almost another program interiorly on its own. That being said organizing both these things at the same time made it more difficult to make sure both aspects were running efficiently. Lastly, when I was organizing this program I had two mentors, but I still couldn’t organize all these things by myself in time to start the program early on in the year. Starting the program early on in the year is probably another major aspect of an efficient mentorship program, this way mentors and mentees can get to know each other throughout the year not half way through it. The reason I was unable to start the program like this is that I had to first organize everything on my own, if I were to start over I would work on this during the summer leading up to the school year.

Since we are the first class to graduate we thought it would nice to honor, and show appreciation to our senior class. We started this school all of the hard work that we put in made this school into what it is now. My partner Jame and I wanted our capstone to be original, and different at the same time. Most importantly we wanted to display our creativity, that is why for our capstone we chose to build it. We did start our project later than we expected because we couldn’t come up with a design concept that we could stick with. While working on our capstone, we spent most of our time working on this during our engineering class, and after school. Considering that we started late we stayed after school longer, that way we could focus. So our process for this project was simple, physically making it was the hard part. This isn’t the first project that my partner, and I have worked on together, prior to this we both have experience. The first steps in building our capstone consisted of us building a base. Wood was the best material to use as a sturdy base. So before we could cut or do anything else we had to take measurements first, because we wanted our capstone to be a reasonable size, secondly because we needed all the pieces of the base to be proportional, and fit evenly. Once all the pieces of the base were measured, then next step was to cut. Cutting was easy since we only had to make three cuts. Now that everything was cut we nailed all the pieces together. The hardest part was next which was painting, because it was so time consuming. We coated our base with two layers of blue paint that way it would give it a smooth look, and feel. We had to pay very close attention to details because when we assembled our pieces we lined them up evenly that it would be straight. Once this was done we were pretty much finished for the most part. We plan to have the all the seniors sign our piece that we can be remembered, and display our piece

My senior capstone was to have a deeper understanding of the term gentrification. I was interested in finding out more about this topic because gentrification is something that is taking place in my neighborhood constantly and rapidly. I have lived in my current neighborhood all of my life and the changes due to gentrification amaze me. My goal of this project was for me to have a deeper understanding of gentrification and how it affects people in my community. I did my own research on the topic as well as interviewing people that are involved in my community to hear their pitches on the issue and what they want to do to solve it . My capstone will fall under the performance projects since I am creating a presentation along with videos and pictures to go along with it. My project helped achieve my learning goal because I obtained information by doing research and finding statistics as well as conducting interviews in my community. The core values fit into my project because I will used inquiry when I asked questions while conducting my interviews. Research fits into my project because I researched facts and statistics on gentrification in my community and why it is happening. Collaboration fits into my project because other people be helped me create my project by being in my videos. Reflection fits into my project because I assessed my learning and findings and related it back to my learning goals. Presentation fits into my project because I will have to showcase my documentary.

Abstract:
Since 2017 is my last year as a student at Science Leadership Academy @Beeber, I decided to do my Senior Capstone on “Welcome to Cooking With Jasseca”. As a Cambodian American living in Philadelphia, not many people know about us, our culture or our food. And because of that, I decided to incorporate my love for food and my culture into my Capstone Project. The purpose of my Senior Capstone project is to learn a few Cambodian dishes from scratch with the help of my grandmother and uncle. I wanted to focus on something that is a part of me. As I was growing older, I felt a sudden disconnection from my culture. Though, as I entered high school, I was able to slowly come to terms on who I am and where my family derived from. And so I asked myself the beginning of senior year, “What can I do for my capstone where I will enjoy and learn throughout the process? How can I make a positive impact to others with what I do?” And so I thought about cooking Cambodian dishes! Not only do I enjoy cooking, but I can learn what type of things are used to create these dishes. I decided to make a blogpost where I can put the recipes on in order to share with others who are interested in cooking these delicious dishes! Sharing these recipes with others will allow them to have a taste of Cambodia! So far, I was able to make two soup dishes and 1 appetizer. I hope to continue doing this in the future, adding on more recipes of delicious Cambodian cuisine to my blog.

For my capstone I chose the art of writing. The book is called: The Overshadow Of Asonavis, which is of the High Fantasy genre. It is apart of a bigger project, my Omágdom Auii-ʌm as I call it, that I have been working on since December of 2010 (The whole thing, not the book).
The initial goal of writing this was first, obviously to publish it, but to have a semi-cult following much like Terry Pratchett.
One huge way that this benefited me was by allowing me to show my true potential. I hope that in the creation of this book, which goes hand in hand with a religion that I made, The Eỹrthr̃uosus Religion, and a language that I made, Lusom, that I do prove what I am capable of.
For this project, my main focus was on Character Development and I think that I did a good job with it. Character Development may seem easy in theory but in practice, it's not so. I worked hard to connect the main characters not only with each other but the world that they live in, dealing with such things as how they experience things together and their past experiences.
As my last remark, I would like to thank readers who take the time to read my book and to my teachers and family for helping me through this process.

For our capstone, we taught a mini course based on the processes of game design. We had data compiled from junior year and senior year to get as much experience as we could. We looked up certain things like teaching methodology and how a class is run and how we should convey our information. Our capstone process involved a lot of testing to see how we could give information to the bright young minds of SLA. I do believe that the many sessions we had, we really got involved in learning what it is to be an educator, and as someone who wants a career in computer science I enjoyed setting up programs for the kids and trying to find new ways for them to collaborate. Each week we learned new things about how to handle teaching and I learned what it is like to try and provide curriculum that I know to other people. Yes there were some students that I had to learn how to deal with correctly, but I was still able to get through to them and make the learning experience for them great. The parts where we had to teach them how to use the program Minecraft in year one, was the year that really stuck with me the most because we had to learn what it is to change an operating system on their machines. I really enjoyed year 1 because of all the hands on computer stuff we did.

My senior capstone was to redesign the senior cafe. The goal was to enable us as seniors to create something that will be able to stay after our present SLA seniors. We wanted to make the senior cafe a place where seniors would actually like to eat their lunch. Over the course of this project we learned about leadership and taking control and leading by example. We wanted to do this for many reasons. Questions were brought up such as, How would the space be useful after we leave? Why don’t many students use the cafe now? ,What kind of room do we want it to be?,. Will it keep more people out of the hallways? ,What would it be used for? We also learned about management and budgeting. We completely renewed it from the paint colors which were chosen by a survey done by students. We brought furniture to go in the room to make it more comfortable and inviting. We purchased games that we thought students would like to play on their free time. We fundraised twice a week to be able to afford all of this stuff. In the beginning we started off with selling ice cream one day and pizza another but the pizza wasn’t making enough money so we stopped that. Towards the end we wanted to add something new to the ice cream. We chose to sell waffles and ice cream, and it was a big success. We also chose to leave something to remember the first graduating class by putting their hand-prints on one the walls in the cafe.
