In my capstone to come up with an idea was difficult at first but after hearing the Sla core values it became really relatively clear to me.The process of getting it to together was especially difficult because i had to find while participants and a date to set up a performance.However;i learned that making and designing a performance is very difficult and every is always subject to change.The overall product that im creating though is a Black Greek style performance called a probate the performance is gonna be done in a presentation and is gonna be preformed by a group of guys in the school.

Jordan Lewis Capstone

Back in the 8th grade, I had a specific pair of nubuck sneakers that was my favorite which I did everything to keep clean. One day I had worn them to gym class and they ended up with scuffs, dirt patches, and random marks.  This made me take the sneakers home and use basic materials to attempt to clean them. When my family saw the results, they started to ask me to clean their sneakers as well. Kick’s Rebirth™ is the product of a sneaker cleaning hobby of mine that began after cleaning that one pair of sneakers in the 8th grade.  

I chose to make this my senior capstone because this is something that I have a large interest in that also benefits others. Not everyone pays notices how many people walk around with dirty shoes wishing they were in better condition. Especially those apart of the sneaker head population. Kick’s Rebirth™ helps those who don’t have time to clean their shoes themselves and saves money for those who end up buying new shoes due to the old ones being dirty.  However, the idea of Kick’s Rebirth won’t just stop at sneaker cleaning. It will soon include sneaker customization, therefore this is a project that you may wish to stay tuned to!

Ashton Woodson's Senior Capstone

​Throughout the year I've been working on big project, known as a capstone. I experienced a lot of hurdles when it came to completing this project. I very indecisive when it came to deciding on what I wanted to do for my capstone. I knew that I wanted a project that benefited others. But, do something that I was passionate about and enjoy doing. I went through a ton of ideas for this project. With that being said, for my senior capstone I decided to make a video about natural hair. I love natural hair and what it stands for. I’m very passionate about natural hair and I love editing video. The inspiration for this project was my TED talk I did in my Art of Short Story class. I wanted my video to be in a YouTube video style. Meaning, I want it to be fun and informative about my subject. In my video I include cool music, animation, clips and images. With my topic of natural hair I wanted to talk about how it plays apart in the African American community. I realized when creating my project that it can mean so many different things. With this natural hair video I talked about hair discrimination, the history of natural hair and I give some tips on natural hair. I you enjoy my project just as much as I enjoyed creating it.

When i was four years old my mom bought me my first gaming console. A man down the street from my house was selling a Playstation 2. That's where my love of games began. Now my only goal is to spread to the joy of video games to others. That's why I have decided to make my capstone the creation of my first game named "The Restraint of Carlos".

Based on the popular games "The Binding Of Issac" and the original Legend of Zelda games, it is a top down survival game where the objective is to defeat as many enemies as possible before all of your health is depleted. The images you see are some I took during the creation of the game. During my presentation People will be able to the firsts to play the game.

RaVaana Griggs Senior Capstone

Recently I started my own business called “RaVi’s Rastas”. Before school started I decided I wanted goddess locs for school. All of the professional stylist charged over $150 so I decided to do the style myself: I did my hair so well that people began to ask me to do their hair. Starting my business I decided to only charge $75 for the goddess locs, going forward the price will go up but this is just my start off price. My mother and I made business card with my Name, Email, and phone number: The card also has the name on my business and a picture of my hair. I knew though my hair would bring me so much. Because of the great business and clients doing my own hair got me I decided to do the same thing for others. On a Wednesday of my choice I will be hosting and leading a workshop for anyone who is interested that teaches participants how to do goddess and faux locs. I will also make a portfolio of the styles I created and an outline of the business strategies I used to gain more customers. The most effective thing I want to do is make a YouTube tutorial on how to do the style, Once I do the whole project I will be putting together a video of the workshop, my tutorial, a slideshow of my client pictures. Saraa Fadl Senior Capstone

For my Senior capstone, I want to create and implement a year-long girls soccer practice because I want to make a change in my Sudanese community. This initiative would be a Sudanese girls version of Starfinder, a soccer-based youth development program that I have been part of for the past four years. Playing soccer, and being part of Starfinder has had a big impact on my life, and I would like to pass what I have learned onto other girls in my community. I am a soccer girl and I have been that way for most of my life. However, I am one of the very few Sudanese girls that actively plays soccer all year long. I want more girls to have the same opportunity to play and benefit from the sport the way that I have. 
         To successfully complete this project, I have the help of my best friend, Razan. She is also a Sudanese American girl who plays soccer for her high school team. My goals for this project are to teach young girls the discipline and life skills that can be learned through soccer, and most importantly, how to have fun! Through this project I realized that it took a number of people to make things happen; to make a change. I also learned that there should be alternatives if something doesn't go the right way. Overall, I feel like I'm close to achieving my goals of teaching my girls how to play soccer.

Haniah Jones & Amani Sheard Capstone

“There are no bad kids, just bad circumstances” A quote from YTC ( a youth transition center located in Southwest Philadelphia). As seniors in high school, we have never experienced homelessness or having to live in a shelter. But what about the hundreds of teens that have? We stepped into the shoes of others by staying at and helping out at a youth shelter and documented and analyzed the experience. The end goal is to help change the community and go beyond what we know. Not only will this open up a new perspective to ourselves and others once we share, but we plan to promote and emphasize a youth center that could be beneficial to many.uld more than likely be our biggest challenge.“The YTC Program is for homeless youth ages 14-17yrs old and utilizes Positive Youth Development (PYD) Best Practice Models, while incorporating Trauma-informed care and Harm Reduction approaches. Through mentoring, education, case management, and employment readiness training, YTC concentrates on building satisfying lives. YTC is dedicated to helping homeless youth, their families, and the community by offering holistic strength-based services.   The whole point of a senior project is to create something memorable and useful to our community. What better way to do so by tackling an issue in our community that directly.

For our capstone, we wanted to create something that would stand out and interest others, as well as ourselves. With everyone in my group wanting to go into some form of engineering, and with all of us having an interest in cars, we decided to create something incorporating both of those ideas, a go-kart. It was small enough that it wasn't too crazy of an idea, yet still intricate enough that we could learn a lot from it and give us a challenge. The process that we went through has been a long and somewhat tedious one. To start we had to learn 2 different 3D modeling programs, the first being Solidworks and the second Autodesk Fusion 360. These two programs helped us to create a visual representation of the parts that we would have to machine and piece together to form a working machine. In addition to learning how to design the pieces themselves, we also had to learn their basic functionality too so that we could get a sense of how everything worked together as one. We then also had to learn other basic requirements for achieving any task such as how to cooperate as a team within our own time constraints and schedules and how to budget ourselves so that we would be able to pay for all the parts and materials necessary. The go-kart itself is still in the final stages of development but should be finished very soon.

Sounds play an important part in many of the things we enjoy. Music, films, television, and even youtube videos use sound as a major component in their media. It is one of the most fundamental parts of entertainment and communication. So inherently I found the subject of sound to be appealing. My desire to understand the fundamentals and facets of sound was a motivating factor. Synthesizers seemed like a logical step since they are like sound boxes. The uses of synthesizers range from music production to movie production as they are used to generate all sorts of sounds and noises. Throughout the year, I developed four fully functioning synthesizers each with its own sound, style, and purpose. Before even beginning to build synthesizers I had spent time researching and learning about sound and the components of a synthesizer itself. Much of my time was also spent testing, designing, and planning synthesizers before construction began. 
Through synthesizers, I learned new concepts, skills, and understandings regarding electronics, programming, sound itself, and circuitry. Computer programming is a completely new skill I had to learn and develop throughout this project, the same goes for creating complex circuits. All of these things took time to establish an adeptness for and required a considerable amount of commitment. The ultimate purpose of this project was to weave together a learning experience with a topic I am interested in and eager about to explore sound and new skills.

When I was initially thinking about what to do for this capstone I was considering the idea of an informative display about greenhouse gas. In addition to information about the effects of greenhouse gases, I wanted to include alternatives. For this project, I decided to inform people about the 5 contributing sectors, transportation, agriculture, industry, electricity, and forestry.  I gather the information about what makes up each sector and how much it contributes and how.

Then I began to consider how I wanted to present this information. I started with wanting to create a model city with information printed or engraved on building and streets. Then I worked down that idea to each section a dedicated box with background information, examples of contributors and alternative to help reduce emissions. I used adobe illustration to make the layout of the box and the laser cutter to cut and engrave the text. In addition, I  used fusion 360 to add in 3D models of the examples to accompany the information.

The information about the specific sectors and about how much of a populated city can contribute to carbon emissions was learned. It was informative to talk about the forestry and agriculture sectors because of how trees and plants affect O2 levels and how reliant this country is on agriculture. I also learned how to create a project from of my own idea with the objective of teaching something specific.

Mya Bulgin & Iris Wilson Capstone

​​For our capstone, the vision that we had was to address and explain serious issues high schoolers are faced with in a way that a younger audience can easily comprehend;we accomplished this through telling of multiple stories which we then compiled into one storybook. The book is divided between three main topics including advocating for yourself, the balance between mental health and school and (whatever the third story is). At the end of each tale, there is a page which details the big ideas and lessons that could be pulled from the story, hopefully prompting the reader to reflect on that. The process of creating this book could described as having three distinct stages; research, story mapping and revision. We were already fairly well informed about the issues we wanted to write about, so the focus of our research was more about how to address such complex problems in a simple way. Once we got a better understanding of how to do that, we had to move onto to actually solidifying storyline details, which took a lot more time because we had to make sure we were only writing things that could also be shown through illustrations. Thankfully, the editing phase was the shortest, as it mostly focused on the aesthetic aspects of the book and it’s quality. This project taught us a lot about how to communicate more effectively in terms of reaching an audience and about how each experience we have is a lesson.

Tyrone Hart Capstone

The greatest thing about having a senior project is that you have one final product to remember yourself and what you brought to your school community. Ever senior has a story, and this project gives them the opportunity to express their opinions of what the perfect project consists of. In my opinion, the best thing I could do with my capstone is written about my high school experience, because I am a very deep thinker and love self-reflection. I get to see how much I’ve grown as a student and formulate an idea of who I want to be as a college student. In my writings I began by discussing my life before SLA and my expectations for school, then I transitioned into my freshman, sophomore, and junior years. Throughout my story, I stop at certain points and acknowledge the lessons I’ve learned in the process. My senior year is formatted a little differently. I started off with my expectations and ended with a summary of all my thoughts on high school and the role I believe experiencing high school will have on my future. During this process, I changed my ideas of conducting my project many times, but overall, I am really proud of my work.

Ivana Gutierrez's Capstone

As the year ends we are close to presenting our final project for the year! For my senior capstone I decided to be a bit more creative with myself. I chose to do special effects makeup (sfx), because of my capstone I believe it allowed me to demonstrate of what I am capable of doing and also I believe it’s a fun way of being creative. What I did for project was make two videos, one of the process and the other of all the final looks. Each look took me about an hour and half to create. In the video everything is sped up so it wouldn’t be a long video when someone is watching it. I created three different looks but similar at the same time, they were all horror and gore. The first one I created was a scary clown and I used my brother as the model for it. The second look I created was a torn off face and the last look I created was monster with scary teeth. Both those I created on myself. From creating this project I learned that there is another side of just using regular makeup, there is also other ways to be creative and that hopefully this can inspire others to try something different.

Working out has become apart of our everyday lives. For some people working out can be difficult and we completely understand because we have experienced this feeling before and sometimes feel it currently. With this being said, we wanted to give an opportunity to people to have the ability to workout. Our goal is to get people moving and shape their bodies to their self liking. The reasoning behind this is because we know how hard it is to get fit. Along with this, athletic trainers charge a lot of money just to share their tips. We felt as though everyone should be able to have the option to get in shape without getting their pockets burnt out; that's where we come in place at. We produced a variety of videos to show a sense of guidance. Some of the videos include ab workouts which focus around the belly area, glute workouts which focus on the bottom area, leg workouts which focus on strengthening the legs and a few bonus videos that will simply make you feel good. Today, celebrities portray this image that you have to pay to get your body done and they show how easy it is. Although working out can be difficult, we wanted to give people who don’t have any motivation a little push towards a better lifestyle. Everyone should build their body instead of buying it.

My name is Amir Lomax-Osaghae and for my senior capstone, I decided to do a celebration for student-athletes who are underappreciated in our school. With that being said, alongside with my colleague and close friend Chris Jones, we put together a sports award assembly; recognizing and shining a light on all the student-athletes here at SLA Beeber for their hard work and sacrifices, as they proudly represented our school throughout the school year. As far as the process, when it came to organizing our capstone, we had a pretty easy time getting the assembly set up and ran due to the outstanding coaches and staff here at SLA Beeber. From this capstone, we have picked a tremendous amount of organization and leadership skills while also earning how to properly and better manage our time. After we present we hope to shine a better light on student-athletes and hope that we post it down to a senior next year to want to do the same thing that we did and then on and on.

Zack Waxler Capstone

For my capstone project I decided to use my skills in web design and programming to make a social media website accessible to only SLA students. I got the idea for this project by looking at current websites that serve this function (slabeeber.org blog posts, twitter, instagram, etc.), and noticing that they all have various problems that prevent them from being appealing options to share meaningful content with other students. The blog for example is almost never used aside from teacher’s announcements and mandatory student submissions, and other social media platforms are rarely used for school related purposes. I wanted my website to serve as a middle ground between those two extremes of school related social media. I created the backend of the website using a framework called Express.js along with many plugins, and I created the frontend using HTML, CSS, and Javascript.

Rymir Vaughn Capstone

My Capstone is a reflection of my journey through my mental health. I take a look back at my feelings toward school, life, and everything in general. I also reflect on the process that I took to get where I am at today. While doing this project I learned a lot. Not only did I learn a lot about mental health and how to deal with it, but I learned so much about myself as well. I hope you enjoy leaning about my journey just as much as I am grateful for my experiences.

Our project was originally to make a   to create a blueprint and create a base for the rocket representing our grad year. The following grad year would add to the rocket and it would keep building up like that. Each grad class would be able to represent themselves within the rocket that would symbolize SLA.  Eventually, we decided to build a full rocket statue. We then pondered on the thought of creating an actual rocket that we would launch on graduation day. That would be a cool idea, but it wouldn’t last long. We wanted to create something that would leave a mark so we decided to turn the rocket into a statue. After doing this we created 2 models because we were in between ideas. We have decided on making 2 miniature models for multiple reasons. One being so that we could have something to reference when we start building the final rocket.  Another reason we decided to build our models is that we wanted to eradicate any potential problems we would run into. We are also currently between ideas as of now so building the two will give us a better view and make it easier for us to decide.  We have a rocket made up of wood and glass and this should serve as a device that students look at and use to reflect on their time spent at SLA. From doing this project we learned how procrastination could be more lethal than sickness. We also learned how important it is to not underestimate a due date that seems far away, such as an end of the year project assigned in the beginning of the year. Another powerful lesson we learned is that you have to be as limber and as strong as a bamboo tree when it comes to challenges. The reason why you only see a part of our rocket is because we want the whole school to see it during our presentation. See you there...

  For senior project, our  main a focus was on the African root connection because this club is  create a school family for the student through learning about our African cultural roots and this club have every aspect of Africaness also we had non -African student who want learn about  African Cultures. Africa is broadly divided in to five as regions but were focsed on two regions the East and west African coutries history and culturies.

 Many SLABeeber students have prejudices about life in Africa.  They believe people from Africa wear long dresses and all African immigrants cover their heads.   

SLABeeber students from Africa have been asked questions like “Why do you cover your head?”, “Why don’t you speak English”, “Do you wear clothes in Africa” and called names like “African Booty Scratcher” and told “Go back to Africa!” and “If you took off your hijab, you’d be pretty”.  The best way to help people understand African culture is to teach them about it. With our African Culture Club, we helped students learn about African cultural clothing and food. We planned activities like attending educational presentations and cooking African food.

Our club helped students learn how to make injera, a local African flatbread. Students at SLABeeber now have a better understanding of African culture because we taught them the reasons behind the food we eat and the clothes we wear.  The club members were so surprised to learn why we cover the heads. Our club members know to understand the traditions of Africa.

The Power Of Poetry By Salina Beattie

For my capstone, I wanted it to be about something that I am passionate about! Or else, I know I wouldn't be able to put my all into it. Since 6th grade, I had a love for poetry. As I got into high school, my love for poetry grew like a wildfire. While working with the Philadelphia Poetry Youth movement, they inspired me to want to widen my audience of listeners. So I came up with the idea of teaching kids (middle school) and teenagers (high school) about "The Power Poetry" and what it can be used for! Throughout my slides, you will see both of the breakdowns for high school and middle school.  I got an extraordinary chance to be able to work with kids from SLA middle school with the supervision of their teacher, Ms.Hamilton who welcomed me like I was her own. Then I taught two tenth grade classes in my school.

My capstone mentor challenged me to cater to both audiences without losing the "it factor" of using poetry to make a difference. So that's what I did! I wasn't able to put the recordings of each grades performances in but I do have them and they performed amazingly! I have to be honest, I was scared that the kids wouldn’t want to participate in the open mic at the end. But overall most people did because they were intrigued by the prompts that I gave. I made sure that we made the room a safe space before sharing. So everyone had a understanding that nobody including the teacher and myself wouldn’t judge the student about what they wrote. After all I was always taught that writing has a mind of its own and will take its course no matter who’s listening. Thank you for viewing my Capstone. For my senior capstone I worked with Tajanae Smith and Samihah Maven in assist to Ms. Houwen. We helped put together the entire junior prom. This includes making the venue, finding the location of the prom, picking a theme, gathering decorations, creating the student’s tickets, etc. The process was not easy but it all turned out well in the end. I arrived at Science Leadership Academy during my junior year of high school, I knew not one single thing about a capstone so I had no idea of what I’d do during my senior year. 
Thankfully Tajanae asked if I’d be willing to partner up with her and Samihah for the capstone. Initially I thought it was a great idea and it would be something fun to see come to life. I then realized, throughout the process that it was not as fun as I thought it would be, whereas it took a lot of time and work. The juniors prom date is May 18th, that being today. Due to the grace of god everything came through successfully causing me to be very much pleased with the outcome of my senior capstone. 
I learned a lot from the process alone, when creating a big of event as prom you have to be really “hands on” with everything you do in order ensure that the people attending the event have a good time. You need to be responsible, have the skills of leadership, communication, organization, etc.  I’m proud of the outcome.

As seniors in high school, we have never experienced homelessness or having to live in a shelter. But what about the hundreds of teens that have? We (Haniah Jones and Amani Sheard) are going to step into the shoes of others by visiting YTC youth shelter while documenting and analyzing the experience. We seek to help change the community and go beyond what we know. Not only will this open up a new perspective on ourselves and others once we share, but we plan to promote and emphasize a youth center that could be beneficial to many. A challenge that we initially anticipated had to do with the fact that we have never been in a shelter. And neither of us have ever interacted with teens who have faced emotional hardships. So thinking of how to approach them without offending them would be difficult. The whole point of this senior capstone project is to create something memorable and useful to our community. What better way to do so by tackling an issue in our community directly. At first, we wanted to just simply volunteer at the shelter, but decided that we needed something better to base a whole senior project on. Therefore, we thought that stepping into the shoes of someone else would not only help us appreciate what we have but then see for ourselves what this program is about and then volunteer afterward. Another goal of this project is to indulge in the lives of someone else to then deeper understand them as people in hopes to end youth homelessness and learn to appreciate what we have in the process. Lastly, to help promote and enforce the goals of the YTC program to those who need it.
