Ngozi Enwereji Capstone

Hello, my name is Ngozi. The main focus of my capstone is based on designing a 2 dimensional and physical representation of a fictional spacecraft while also applying logic to how this could actually become a reality. Although the designing process might be easy for me, I had to do actual research on what was in an actual fighter, it’s accessories, technology, and how it worked. To take it a step further, to display my engineering skills, I created 3 additional designs while pertaining relevance to it’s first fictional counterpart. In conclusion, this project is essentially putting my engineering mechanics and designing on display.

Marieam Bah Capstone - Homeless Care Packages

PicCollage
PicCollage

Everyday we get up to brush our teeth with toothpaste, wash our bodies with soap, shampoo and condition our hair, moisture our bodies with lotion, and for women use the necessary feminine hygiene items. We are fortunate to have these small, but dire necessities daily. Unfortunately, 400,000 of 1.6 million Philadelphians are not as lucky. My mission is to create 50 personal care packages for homeless men and women in Philadelphia complete with necessary toiletries including toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap, socks, a bottle of water, and pads/tampon for women. My motivation for helping the homeless came after watching a YouTube video I came across randomly, it was about homeless women who struggled monthly to get the necessary feminine care products like pads and tampons. I was immediately moved by the video and decided to apply my efforts to respond to the issue via my senior capstone project. I set out to raise $300 to purchase the necessary supplies for 50 care packages through donations in-person and online. I was able to raise $165.70, this will be enough for 30 care packages. It is 20 less packages than my goal, however I am happy to be able to make any contribution, no matter how small to helping those less fortunate than most with the most basic of necessities. I am also glad for the lesson I have learned in taking on this project and the support I received from my family, friends, teachers, and people that believe in the project.

For our capstone, we wanted to create something that everyone will be able to benefit from as well as ourselfs due to this being our last year at Science Leadership Academy at Beeber. We wanted to make our mark on the school that's where my partner and I had come up the idea of creating a small workshop, during lunch that will involve STD and HIV.We also we are going to put our interview  that we took at the clinic center so we are able to show students a good a real-life example of this disease and how important public health is we are also creating a website that we will present to the school so we hope this answer all the questions that anyone may have about this type of diseases. The reason for us to create a website was that we strongly felt as if nobody in this generations doesnt likes to read books anymore so we made it easier since the internet is very useful when getting information across the world.

Science Leadership Academy Middle School Mentorship Program w/Faithe Ben

Capstone Presentation
This is a 6-month long program meant to reach out to the SLA Middle School students and help them acclimate to the core values and the expectations that come along with going to an SLA school. We would be helping them with social issues that come along with being older and working with other students, which is encouraged by our collaboration value and aiding them with any academic issues they may come across. Essentially, the mentors would be playing a big brother/big sister role and working to help improve relations with the mentees throughout the program. This program will help build ties with our sister school and also teach them how they, too, can help the community around them. I choose to continue this program because I have 3 younger sisters and several cousins, so I am very involved in helping them with troubles they may face in school, with classwork, or with people. I wanted to extend this to kids in the SLA community that had no one else to help them. This program helped to make kids who weren´t comfortable talking to other kids, comfortable and willing to engage with their classmates. This program helped to encourage kids to try their best even if they fail a couple of times before they make it. This program was created to give the rising students of the SLA community a place to go and feel like themselves, to be guided, to be listened to, to create bonds.

“Prom has all the elements of a popular story. It reeks of all-Americanness, tension, drama. It has romance. Pretty dresses. Dancing. Limos. High school. Coming of age.” - Adora Svitak

The Capstone project that I completed along with two other partners was the planning of the Junior class prom.  The initial person responsible for the inspiration of this project was my partner Tajanae Smith, but after several discussions we decided to work collectively along with Aliyah Watson. I believe that with this Capstone project, it would positively impact the SLA Beeber community. For instance, by helping the juniors, we were able to show the rest our community that by collaborating you can truly learn from one another despite how hard you may think the challenge may be. The vision for my Capstone project was to be able to effectively create the best prom experience for the Junior class. Despite what you may think, planning a prom is not the easiest task. There are sleepless nights, constant phone calls, mass group texts, and not everyone agrees with each others ideas. However, the job must be done!

During my experience I also set a personal goal before starting my Capstone experience. The personal goal that I set for myself was to be able to apply all of my knowledge that I have learned from the five core values and apply them to my prom planning throughout the year. I strongly believe that by setting personal goals for this project, it helped me develop several skills that I didn’t think were essential for the prom.

For our Senior Capstone project, we decided to work together in rehabbing an entire house in Port-Richmond area. I was in charge of all construction in the house and Zoe was the interior designer. Zoe and I have always loved using our hands and creativity to make things, and even more so when that thing could be useful to others. I enjoy doing the structural aspects where I have to always think ahead on what I’m making. Zoe enjoys taking simple things and her own artistic views and implementing them in big ways. Putting these things into consideration, we felt that doing something as big as this, was a great idea. Not to mention that we are both pursuing careers in these fields going into college next year. There was a great deal we had to figure out along the way and we knew from the beginning that this was not something we could do alone. We hired peers from school to work with us on the weekends and had to cut things from our own schedules often to get more time in the house. Our mentor, John Staack of Staack Moore Woodworking, was incredibly helpful throughout this whole 11-month process! He provided us with all the resources we needed to bring this house back to life. Even now as the Capstone presentations are coming soon, there is still some work to be done in the house before the open house in June. But, Zoe and I are seeing this through to the end and, when it’s all good and done this is an experience we will never forget and always appreciate.

For my capstone, I decided to do a mural which would help the school hallways look better. This project started as an idea in 9th grade and evolved to be what it is today. My partner and I worked together to create a painted wall with flags and the name of the school on top of it. To create the flags, we sent a survey out to the school to collect information concerning the different countries our students are from. We used all of the information and collaborated with our mentor to decide all of the flags that should be included. I tried to find an interesting way of writing our school name that would also fit the style of our school. Through this, I think I got a better understanding of how diverse our school is. This project took a lot of physical work and even more planning but the final product is worth it.

My final project for high school is a mural. This mural is very creative and lights up the hallway. My partner and I decided to work on a mural, we started with 5 mini walls we would do but then decided to do one wall that represents everything. The wall contains flags of the students that go to Science Leadership Academy @ Beeber and the name of the school. We wanted to include the students and their opinions, we started off with surveys for the students which asked for “What country are you from?”. From there we started sketching, my partner and I  had different ideas first but we decided that we should combine everything together. While doing this mural, I have seen many students connect with the flags that we put up, they were excited for their flags to be on the wall. Cyrus and I put a lot of hard work on this project, we both went out of our way to get the supplies we need. This mural is my favorite high school project that I spent days and days working on.

My partner Alexus Tomlinson and I did a Public Service Announcement about Homelessness. We changed what we wanted to do a few times, but at the end, we settled on Homelessness. When I was looking up information about homelessness and looking at the statistics is devastating. There are many people on a given night who sleep on the streets or in a shelter in Pennsylvania and in America. We went to Old Pine Community Center and The People's Center and interview a few people who worked or volunteered at these centers. We asked them a few questions like why they do what they do and how we can reduce homelessness. I hope my PSA would open the eyes of many people and hopefully find their own way to help the homeless people in their community.

Yarisnel/Diabetes Awareness

Diabetes is one of the leading  diseases happening all over the world.  I personally know about 5 people who have diabetes. It is because of this epidemic that I decided to do my senior project on a diabetes awareness video. Although I already know a lot about the disease eye when to doctors and nurses and people who have this disease to talk and to understand more about it.  This video was not only important but it was personal to me. As you can see in the video of my grandmother has diabetes. she also lives with me, if they're my family we all take turns helping out taking care of her giving her the proper assistant she needs. The video I don't only explain what diabetes is I give a inside as to how my grandmother got it and how it has affected her.  I also gave pointers on ways to prevent diabetes and the difference between the two types of Diabetes. I hope for this project is that people will he and get a better understanding of how diabetes worse and how to it can have such an effect on a person's life.

For our senior capstone, my partner Theresa Debrah and I decided to create a video about friendship. We wanted to create a video that expresses how the friendships you make at SLA shape you into the person you are today. For the 4 years of attending SLA@Beeber, there has been some ups and downs within friends. Meanwhile, there has always been a great support system within our friendships, whether it is emotionally, physically and intellectually. Which we fail to realize because we end up to become too prideful and let certain things get to us. However, starting the 10th-grade year, Theresa Debrah and I became friends. Then, became closer through the years and decided to do our capstone together.

The capstone process has been long and stressful. My partner Theresa and I  have struggled with coming up what to do for our capstone. We first decided to do a fashion show, but unfortunately, we weren’t able to do so. Similarly to doing the fashion show, we decided to put on a school plays which, also didn't really work out the way we wanted it to. As a result of our unsuccessful capstone ideas, my partner and I finally decided on creating a video, that was inspired by our Principal Mr. Johnson who spoke about friends helping each other out to succeed. Although, we had encountered many ups and down on the capstone journey we had finally produced the final product to our capstone that we can say we are proud of.

This is a picture of 22 pillows and care packages I made for a local women’s shelter.
The idea that I had for my Senior Capstone was turning an idea that I had into something bigger and better. The.Pillowtalk was an idea that I had for a pillow company with my target market being college students or people that just wish to add an accessory to their home decor. However, as I worked throughout the year, I had the idea of making a care package for those in need. I experienced some difficulties along the process, for example, finding what materials work best for
pillows, how to incorporate lining, the best way to create a care package, and making sure the pillows look presentable. I had the opportunity to create pillows and care packages for 22 women.

I am most proud of the process of making the packages. Cutting fabric, making sure it was accurate, stuffing them with poly fiber filling, and hand sewing them closed was a long process. However, I received a lot more practice with one thing that I consider a hobby. I am also proud to have done something positive for others. In the future, I hope to improve on my skill while also doing a great deed.

For my Capstone, I have been looking over the essays that I have written throughout my high school career, and I challenged myself to choose a few essays that resemble my overall growth as a writer. This was quite difficult as writing is one of my strengths and passions. However, I did not let this get the better of myself. Upon looking through the essays with a critical eye, I was able to easily pick out essays that resemble my growth as a writer. I chose this as my capstone because I wanted to challenge myself to not only find out whether or not I successfully create a project that exhibits my writing, both as a passion and strength, but to also see how far I have grown as a writer and reflect on the overall impacts that writing had upon my life.

For this capstone, we decided as a group to make something that summarizes and symbolizes our 4 years at SLA. It took us a while to figure out what exactly it was going to be, and we had trouble deciding which direction we should take our idea. After continuous discussions with each other and different ideas being presented, we went forward with the creation of a short book. A book was a way for us to show the experiences that we had together at this school for 4 years, but in a fictional story. There was input and feedback from different mentors that aided us in the process, each helping in various ways.  For the book, we wanted to create an accurate picture of what life is like at SLA from our point of view, while using the feedback of others to create a second story during the presentation. Our school is different in everyone's eyes, and this project illustrates that.

For this capstone project, I created a PowerPoint presentation on the steps to become a veterinarian. I wanted to create a capstone project for this because this was a career that i have inspired to be for years. I have been wanting to be a veterinarian since the age of six years old and it is a career that I still enjoy. With this capstone, I wish to inform people on the profession that I was interested to for so long and it would be an incredible thing to at least get people to consider doing something like this as their future career. Convincing someone to become a veterinarian would be amazing to do because that is exactly what I want to achieve. Throughout my presentation, I tried to give some of the simplest of steps to help guide someone that would like to become a veterinarian. If I can not do that, then I simply wish to inform others about my and possibly other people’s career choice to hold respect for them as others would respect different types of career choices and future professions. I have tried to thoroughly experience the steps from the course to take to how to possibly opt out of it if they want to. After this project, I feel like this research has became a refresher. The reason why I feel this way is because I was able to go over information that give me  more things to think about for my future career.

My group and I decided to make a go kart for our capstone. We have two mentos which are Mr. Lawrence and his friend Sal who we work with at downtown SLA. We decided to make a go kart because all of us are going into engineering majors and we are all really interested in cars. Since we didn’t know where to start with building the go kart we started to look on ebay and craigslist for different parts of a go kart that we thought we might need. We bought was a frame and an engine. Sal told us that the most important thing is to create a design for the go kart so that it’s easier to understand all the dimensions and where everything needs to go. We ordered all the other parts that we need for our go kart like the rear axle, the clutch, and brakes. We haven’t finished completely building the go kart but we just finished the final design. We have all the correct dimensions and the parts that we need. Now we have to weld the frame so that it is the size that we want. Then we have to attach all of the parts to the rear axle and then weld that onto the frame and then place the engine on the frame. Once we finish this all we have to do is attach simple things like the steering wheel, pedals and wheels to the go kart and we will be finished.

Entering Science Leadership Academy at Beeber in ninth grade was a start of a chapter in my life. In this chapter were laughter, blood, sweat, tears, contentment, and happiness. I am sad to say that this chapter is coming to an end, but before it ends we are given the opportunity to apply what we learned at SLA@Beeber by doing the Capstone Project. At first I didn't know what to do. I changed my Capstone topic three times before coming choosing my topic. My Capstone Project is about stress and how it affects one's mind. I chose stress because it played a major role in my four years of high school; especially during the college process.

To prevent stress for the "soon to be seniors" I presented a powerpoint on "What You Need To Know To Succeed In Your Senior Year". In this presentation, I covered everything from the application process to senioritis. I covered many topics that will come up in their senior year, to have them feel more prepared. I understand that my presentation will not erase all stress because SLA@Beeber has a rigorous curriculum, but I hope my advice could help them make better decisions and by better decisions have a more successful senior year.

Capstone Nursing One On One by Ashley and Jorge.

For my capstone, I wanted to create something that everyone will be able to benefit from as well as myself as this is my last year at Science Leadership Academy at Beeber. I wanted to make my mark on the school that's where my partner and I had come up the idea of creating a small workshop, during lunch that will involve STD and HIV. We also we are going to put our interview  that we took at the clinic center so we are able to show students a good a real-life example of this disease and how important public health we are also creating a website we will also present the presentation and the website to the school so we hope this answer all the questions you may have about this type of diseases. The reason for us to create a website was that we strongly felt as if nobody in this generations likes to read books anymore so we made it easier since the internet is very useful when getting information across the world. I feel as if I was able to grow as a student when creating this project this capstone as made me learn not only more about myself health but the public health as well. In fact, public health is extremely important not only does it affect our absorbent it affects our bodies as well. In this capstone, Jorge and I had come up the idea to interview a person who deals with HIV/ Aids computers on the ruler. As we asked the questions I felt as if I was able to get a better understanding of how  HIV relates to public health. Also, one thing many people may not know about HIV is if a woman had sexual intercourse with a person who has HIV and she gets pregnant that baby will be born with HIV. One important questions I felt like me and my parents kept getting asked was can it be transmitted by kissing,  touching, drinking off of that person to sum everything up the answer is no HIV can only be transmitted to a person by sexual intercourse. Overall this project had given me a different viewpoint.

“Knowing that it has never been done before makes me want to fight even harder.”
― Misty Copeland

The Capstone project that my two peers and I decided to complete is a dance showcase. The vision for this showcase was to be able to show the individuality of my group members to successfully create a cohesive artistic piece. Dance holds a special place in each one of our lives.
Dancing is a unique art that only requires passion. To us dance is just not any movement put together; it's harder than many people may think. Dancing has certain moral and lessons. “ Five! Six! Seven! Eight! Pull up, turn out, head straight, toes pointed and tuck your butt”. Being a dancer takes a lot of courage. Dancers are consistently told there aren’t good enough to make it professionally or their too “thick” to be a ballerina. Dance is the best medium in which people show the world their true colors, showing their vulnerable side. When we dance, we connect with the music that affects our body, our thoughts, and the mind. We dance because there is nothing that can engage us physically, emotionally and socially. It's a journey of growth that helps us understand the world from a different perspective.
Throughout a dance career, you get the best dancers in the world and ones who inspire you as a person. Our vision was to share our craft with others, we thought that making up an SLA dance team would help others to break out their shells and try to do something positive within our community. Within this project, we learn how to become a role model and for them to become part of a sisterhood. However, the making of this team was not the easiest task.

For my capstone I worked with a student who has ASD. Every Thursday I would go and talk to him, play charades, draw, and even just do check ins. As time went on I started enjoying the time spent with the student so my time with him increased to twice a week. I started keeping a record of the different things I did with him and different drawings that were made. I love helping others and when I come in and help this particular student I am able to help him feel comfortable in his own community. I know how hard it is making friends and to socialize with people and that needs to be changed.

When I first met the student I actually thought it would be difficult working with him because I myself am shy even after being apart of this community for 4 years so I know how he feel for his first year. I still get shy but working with this student has been a pleasure because we both have been stepping out of our comfort zone with each other by playing charades and acting different things out with one another, by showing our art skills and even just making conversation about how our week has been. Many people don’t know what ASD is or what having autism means so here is my awareness presentation on what ASD is, effects of having ASD, different types and the relationship it has with social skills.

When we saw Mr. Elish working on the room Brandon and I knew immediately that we wanted to turn the room into something spectacular. We got together during the summer and decided that for our capstone we would help turn this room into a more comfortable and advance room so it looked like a legit bike workshop. Above you can see our first blueprint of how exactly we wanted the room to look like. The metal sheets were going to be the floor mats, the checkerboard wall (Mr. Elish idea) and a bike hanging from the wall. Of course we made a few adjustments to the plan. For example the metal floor mats we choose to replace with foam mats because they were cheaper and more sensible to use for the purpose we needed them for. Another adjustment we made to was the color of of paint we were gonna use. Currently we have the whole room painted white and are waiting for the floor mats to come in so we can pick them up. Instead of hanging a bike on the wall we created a banner with the bike shop logo on it to hang up. As you can also see above, the logo changed a few times as well. Eventually, we got it right and decided to go with the last logo as it showed both skateboards and bikes which is to show that both communities are accepted. We are very excited to present to you SLA Beeber's Bike and Board very soon!

When you start High School you never know how your four years will be like. Some people may have good experiences and others may have bad experiences. Either way, high school will be a learning experience for everyone. I believe my four years at Science Leadership Academy at Beeber have been a roller coaster. For my Capstone project, I wanted to share my experience with the people who have impacted me the most at SLA at Beeber by creating a video. I believe making this video was the best way for me to do reminisce and reflect on the importance of what SLA has done for me and others. I wanted to focus on how things changed for me because I came into this school with a lot of confusion. I continuously asked myself, who will be my friends? How will I be academically? Will I have good relationships with my teachers? My video shows how I came to terms with all of my curiosity. I made this capstone to reflect on my four years in high school but also thank everyone. To do that, I had to put together interviews with students and teachers for people to really understand what it is like to be apart of the SLA community. In conclusion, I gathered videos and pictures of all the people who have were significant to me. The goal of creating this video was to be inspirational and for people to remember Science Leadership Academy at Beeber the way I will remember this school.
