Botany PSA - Epifanio Rios

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHYIVDlQdS8&feature=youtu.be

Summary - In our video we talk about the benefits and the reasons of why you should start a garden. We also talk about how to maintain a garden and what steps you can take to keep your garden in a good condition. The video also has some background support from a nearby urban farm on the benefits of an urban farm. We tackle questions like: what is a garden? How do people create relationships with plants? What are the needs of a garden? and How has nature and gardening affected you?

Reflection - I contributed a lotto this project. I have been the main contributor in terms of photography, writing, and planning. I was the sole editor and director of this PSA. My group mates have contributed in terms of writing and in the interview process. I think as a whole we did a good in providing a well written script that touches many points in the rubric. But I think we could improve on the quality of the images and videos used. Could have used key images in relation to what was being said. But we wanted to show the beauty and the usefulness of a garden as a backdrop to the narration. Personally I thought the most meaningful experience of creating the PSA was going out to record and photograph the indoor and outdoor gardens we have and interacting with them for the video. It really makes you appreciate the environment and having the privileged to take part in it.

Other Section - What factors affect urban gardening? Well there are many factors that effect urban gardening: community, location, neighborhood, even the plants you decide to grow. Depending on who you are surrounded by, an urban farm can thrive or not. The location can determine the benefit it has on you and the people around you, and it can really bring people in if it somewhere where they people can care about it and use it. And the Plants you grow can help bring people in too, since fresh produce is always in need and people will come to get some since it can serve as a convenient source. What factors affect urban farming in schools? The most important factor affecting urban farming in schools is the role the garden plays for the school. Whether it is used to teach or feed students and teachers can really make a difference to urban gardening in schools. What role do the economy, politics, and society play in gardens? Truly each of those things to do not need to play a role in gardening if resourceful you can keep politics out of gardening. Society plays the role of providing people who have the drive and power to garden. It is the working hands. Economy plays the role of funding the garden, but also providing people with the means to obtain produce or experience from gardens. Its the pushing and thinking mind. What Careers apply botany and urban farming concepts? Any career can apply botany and urban farming concepts. Both of these fields can provide important ideas and skills to be able to meaningfully interact with others or even improve your work. Cultivating can really help teach someone about care and purpose being put into their work and how to ensure success.

Botany PSA on Urban Farming/Gardeninig

Our video includes an interview with two members of the Greensgrow Farm on Cumberland Ave. They share their views on management of the garden, new urban farms and the societal benefit of these farms. We really wanted to meet with with staff members of urban farms and gardens to know how they think about gardens and farms, what there experiences have been? Not only that, we mention the benefits of composting and the ways to manage soil pH levels. We want people to know that starting or being a part of an urban garden/farm isn't daunting.

As a group member, I contributed in helping create our PSA. Not only that, I worked with another group member to arrange our meeting with Greensgrow Farm. I thoroughly enjoyed our meeting at Greensgrow Farm. The beauty and ambiance of the area was so inviting and pleasant. I personally felt in peace walking through the plants and flowers, it felt so refreshing.

Our other research focused on economical and political impact. Urban farming reduces the cost of fruits, vegetables, and dairy. Small communities growing their own foods lessens our carbon footprint and saves money. Nonetheless, our Administration doesn't believe in going all green. Not only that, accessing land is a difficult at this time.

For my senior project which is also called a Capstone, my partner and I decided to throw a SLA  @ Beeber's first fashion show! As you can imagine it was both exciting and stressing being as though we are both 18 years old with outside of school responsibility we had to tend to but overall we got the job done. We did a "blast from the past" fashion show covering different ears such as 80's , 90's Afrocentric and Present day. Both the Afrocentric and Present day clothes were designed by SLA students. The first three months were strictly fundraising , we did bake sales , waterice sale , hot dog, chip and soda combo's . All to raise the money to fund the clothes the model would be wearing in the show and to fund  other things for this production , The next month around February we began our tryouts and starting practices for the show. We did photo shoots to create flyers to advertise the show and me being the present day designer, I began to work on my pieces that would be in the show.  We partnered with another student Jason Prez and got him to record the show so we could have not only pictures but a video of what we put together. We had to do research on what the clothes looked like at the time, we to create a estimated price range etc. This fashion show was far from easy, it took so much hard work but it all paid off in the end.

Q4 Benchmark Final

The video we created was a PSA containing two types of information. We first had an skit that consisted of the people in or group protesting on the street saying information relating to urban gardening. Then it would soon switch to an interview were took at an actual community/city urban garden. We asked them a lot of question based on our previous checkpoints to make a 21 minute interview.

To this group I contributed plenty by taking part of how we were going to do the skit; the basic idea of what we were doing. I also helped by including at least three questions to ask during the interview we would soon accomplish. I was also present in the video and the recordings.

I think our interview went perfectly because of the questions we had, the amount of care the people displayed, and the responses we got. I feel like our commercial could be better (If I had to pick an area of improvement). I’m not sure in a specific area, because I think it’s fine, but I don’t think it had the same flow of information as the interview (Even though it was 21 minutes). But I'm still very pleased with the skit.

The most meaningful part of the PSA was doing the interview, because I learned a lot of things from the questions i asked. I was very interested and it made m plan in my head that “when I get my own apartment, I will definitely have some kind of garden in my backyard”. Even after the interview, off camera, I asked another question because I was genuinely interested. It was about what kind of water was used to fuel water plants (WHICH DOESN’T NEED SOIL!).

Q4 Benchmark INDIVIDUAL final submission

  1. Provide a summary of the contents of your video and a rationale for why YOU chose this topic, in paragraph form.
  • Our group did our video on tobacco use. We chose this topic because we already knew it was a huge public health issue that many people pay know mine to. We start the video with a introduction to what tobacco is. Then we start to talk about tobacco in media. After talking about tobacco in media we talk about tobacco in the youth. Health and how tobacco affects it is what we talk about next. After that we give our closing statement.
  1. Provide a reflection on how you contributed to the project and the role you played in the group.
  • I believe I contributed a lot to the project. I wrote the script and put the video together.
  1. What did you do well and what could you have done differently?
  • I believe I did well explaining our topic. I feel like I could had done more research to get more information.
  1. What was the most meaningful part of the experience of creating the PSA?
    1. Try to summarize by addressing some of the unit essential questions
      1. What factors affect public health?
      2. What role do the economy, politics, and society play in the healthcare system?
      3. How is the process of research being affected?
      4. What careers apply public health and concepts from anatomy/physiology?
  • The most meaningful part of creating this PSA was being able to inform people. Tobacco is one of the leading cause of deaths in the U.S. and still people smoke. The government puts taxes on cigarettes but that still doesn't stop people from smoking them. Media keeps people from being well informed, everyone knows smoking is bad but most people do not really care. Most people who are against tobacco use are cancer survivors or members of a family who lost someone to cancer. They lead the movement and start charities and organizations to help people from all over.

HIV & Aids

https://youtu.be/jhsIemCL-ps
During the Quarter 4 Benchmark in Anatomy and Physiology the topic that was given to my group member and I was HIV. This topic plays a big role in a lot of peoples lives who live in world. It is extremely important that we read and understand this disease. I was able to help my partner Wayne with filming and I was responsible for checkpoint 2 as a whole. The biggest thing I learned from thi s has to be that there are people out there who live with this and only they understand how they feel. I also enjoyed hearing Ms.Lees point of view on the medical field.

On a 36 x 36 canvas, I created a piece to express my struggle with depression. I choose bright colors in dark hues of acrylic paint to shade my image. I came up with the concept of a profile of a dazed person showing the inner battle in their mind ( a person taking one step at a time) I sketched it on paper and added more meaning throughout the design and mapped out the design on scrap paper. Then painted the background waited for it to dry and outlined my design in chalk. After that, i began to block in color starting with larger objects like the hair, mind, and neck and then went on to smaller objects like the eye and lips. When I completed that I went back and added more detail. When I was finished I let it sit and decided that I didn't like the eye and hair so, I repainted them… twice. As far as color scheme and proportion I was inspired by artist like Mark Paul Deren although the design was completely original and I did not use a reference photo.

Alcohol Abuse & Public Health

Overall, I enjoyed this project however the process was very stressful. Starting with the interview, it took a while for people to get back to us because they were so busy. It took us a few weeks until we were finally able to get the interview. When we did, we were able to ask Dr. Catherine Williams all the questions we had a phone interview which was over a half hour long. After finally getting our interview we then worked on filming other clips for our final piece. That was moving very smoothly until we had some problems with getting the footage off the cameras. From this project though we did learn a lot about how alcohol abuse in one person can impact many others.

For my Senior Capstone I wanted to do something that was important to me and a significant part of my high school career which was sports. I played a sport every year of my high school career and I had some hardships with it but overall it has helped me through highschool and staying focused on graduating and going to college. My partner Gianna also felt the same connection with sports so we collaborated on our capstone to hold a sports banquet for the 2016-2017 school year. We wanted to come together and celebrate all the sports, athletes, and coaches from this great athletic year for SLA@Beeber. Starting in about November Gianna and I had a plan for a banquet but as the year went on and we often had a lot of other work to do our plan got away from us. We wanted to start fundraising but was never able to make time for it. We then realized by March our plan was a little unrealistic so we started to downsize it but still focusing on the final product of a ceremony to honor our peer student athletes. We then also started budgeting our own money because we weren’t able to fundraise and was able to make arrangements that fit the budget but would still be worth it in the end. We now have a full plan and are still executing it. Our ceremony will be held in the auditorium on June 7th, 2017 at 1:30.

 Annotated Bibliography

National, Hazeltine. "Making Your High School Sports Banquet Memorable." Hazeltine National Golf Club. N.p., 8 July 2013 . Web. 04 Apr. 2017.
This article was written by Hazeltine National, a professional event decorator. This article was mostly about how to decorate your party area. An event such as this requires a lot of thought and coordination. National went through step by step on what to do and how to do it. Some steps she included was making it memorable with props, color coordination with school colors, honoring students accomplishments, table and seating arrangements, etc. This is super helpful to us because it gives us a basis on how to start our set up. It allows us to picture the decor we are most looking for and where to start that from.

Brennan , Cheri . "Creating and Designing a Sports Banquet Theme." Ezinearticles.com . N.p., 30 Aug. 2009 . Web. 4 Apr. 2017 .
This article was written by Cheri Brennan and it goes into great detail on what we need to create for part of the decor at our banquet. Sports banquets are suppose to be formal, since it is an honorable event. Being said that, formality is what we are going to aim for. She explains that lighting, backgrounds (for pictures), a podium, eating materials (napkins, plates, silverware), etc, are all important factors in creating a “formal” look. Knowing how to create a formal look is going to help us a lot in the long run because that is what we really want to come out of this. We want to create something so perfect that it will be memorable. Coming in with a very coordinated event will be something no one will forget.

Writer, Leaf Group. "Sports Banquet Invitation Wording Ideas." Entertainment Guide | Local.com. Local.com, 26 June 2011. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.
Invitations are one of the most important things to include when creating any kind of event. Its most important when creating a formal event like a sports banquet. Since our event is honoring and congratulating athletes, that needs to be really broad on our invitations. They have to be particular and noticeable. The article explains what needs to be on the invitations since our event is specific. It tells us to include; location, attire, who is being honored and what the official agenda is. This really benefits us because creating the invitation is the number one thing to start with, after finding all of the general information about our event. The invitation attracts our invitees.

Berkowitz , Kenny . "Better Banquets." Better Banquets. N.p., 29 Jan. 2015 . Web. 04 Apr. 2017.
This article is about other schools and what they do to keep their banquets interesting. Sometimes, events such as this one can be really drawn out and people usually leave when it isn’t even over yet. For us, that is not our goal at all. We want to make it as involved and fun as possible. This article gave us different ideas to keep it interesting. It explains that involving as many students as possible is the best idea because everyone is being honored (which parents want, and more people will come). It also gave us the idea of selecting a few people, mostly seniors, to give a speech about their time at SLA and how their sport is important to them. We also want to include as many lower classmen as possible.

"Team Awards Dinner Ideas To Celebrate The End Of the Season." To Celebrate The End Of the Season. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.
This article doesn’t have a main author, but it talks a lot about the food part of any sports banquet, or any party at all. In the article, it is suggested that before we start doing any catering planning, to have a all around survey on what people like. By having people take a survey, a more diverse list can be created, offering many. They give us ideas on what kind of food set up we can use, and we find it most helpful using a buffet set up. A buffet will allow our guests to have a little bit of a choice. Although this article mainly focuses on food options, it benefits us because now we have an easier way of figuring out an easy food plan.

Blankenburg, Eric. "Ideas for an Athletic Banquet." EHow. Leaf Group, 24 Jan. 2010. Web. 04 Apr. 2017.
This article goes over a couple of important things; decorations, foods, awards, activities, gifts, etc. We find this article most helpful when the author focuses in on awards. As a pair, we haven’t quite figured out what kind of articles we are offering yet. But, this article explains that the most important one to hand out to each sport team is “MVP.” This can open up a variety of awards that we could use such as “most improved” “most team spirit” “all around athletic” and many more. The article tells us that it is important to recognize and all and not leave anybody out, especially if they are there. As we have said before, we want this to be as memorable as possible considering these are the first ever athletes at SLA and this is the first capstone.
