Kitana Seals Capstone.Bentum.2019

For our capstone we made a video for both seniors and upcoming 9th graders. We used seniors and advisors to get the message across. We interviewed the seniors so that the incoming freshman could see what it could be like in the SLA community as well as the experiences that you could have. The advisors in the video would be for the seniors and their final message to the class of 2019. Before we got to this outcome we had to do some research about what a community really is and how it can affect people. When we gathered information on a community we wanted to ask questions that would relate to what people in school thought of our community. It’s about being in a safe space and having a mutual understanding of the people around you and creating things together. That relates to some of our core values like collaboration and presentation.we thought about how we can make this a legacy at SLA Beeber. This video is a heartwarming style documentary about what people actually think about SLA and what seniors are leaving to the future generations. We’re establishing a foundation that they can build on and make the community and school better.

Jadaline Torres: Sexual Assaults on College Campuses Capstone

As a young woman, going into college this fall, my goal creating this project was to expand not just my knowledge but other upcoming freshman going into college, the importance of sexual assault on college campuses and why its such a common thing with not enough attention. I also wanted to address the damage sexual assaults cause, what people think when they hear sexual assaults, the controversy of the topic, and what we can do to bring more attention to prevent them. I included research in my capstone by looking at various statistics and websites with information on sexual assault on college campuses. I incorporated collaboration by connecting with different students from SLA (a 9th grader, 11th grader, senior, one teacher) to see how all of their perspectives varied/differed. For the presentation section of the core values, I first decided to do a google slide shows with different statistics and helpful information. I changed my mind because I felt a video was something more memorable to leave behind at SLA and I also felt it was more creative to get some of my peers involved and hear about their views/opinions of the topic. In conclusion, reflecting on this capstone, I was happy with the outcome of what I created and liked that I was able to collab a few of my peer's opinions/views and see how they were different/alike. Creating this project,  I aimed to be able to spread more awareness of sexual assaults on college campuses and I hope I achieved this.

Tianna Cain - Mental Health Capstone

For my capstone, I wanted to know how does school affect teens and staff mental health. In order to go about this question, I had to send out a survey with various questions and then go off to interview students and staff throughout the school. This originally was not the plan, I had planned to just have google slides, but Ms. Aziz inspired me to do something more. It took Savannah and me a while to figure out what questions we wanted to include on our survey but we had already known what questions we would ask during the interviews. The final product of our capstone is the interview video with various students and staff. I concluded from listening to our student interviewees that school negatively impacts them more than positively. Personally, for me, the school also impacts my mental health negatively also. It's not common for me where it's always positive days that nothing bad has happened during the entire day. Whereas with the staff interviewees, school impacts their mental health more positively. If I were to do this again, I would want to interview more staff so it's close to an equal amount of people interviewed. Overall, I would say that I enjoyed completing this capstone and I wouldn't mind doing it once more.

Public Health: Epidemiology of the Eye PSA

https://youtu.be/VOe0EIiNI8I
This is a video made by group talking abput the importance of eye care and the various afflictions that can happen to one's eyes. Alongside an interview with the wonderful Mrs. Rachel Bishop

I personally wish I could have been around more for the work behind the project, but I am happy I was able to help edit and put the video together

Public health and the Epidemiology of the eye and vision care

For our project, we as a group decide to talk about the eyes from a public health stand point. We gained some general knowledge on eye care and public health through research but that information wasn't enough. So as a result we planed to interview Ms. Rachel Bishop. She is an ophthalmologist and she was able to answer the questions we had prepped. Now, in my group I did do some research and for the interview I was there helping record it. Outside of that I wish I were able to get in contact with my ophthalmologist. As for the meaningful part of the project, it would have to be the fact that people who could see the video would be able to understand that Eye care is a very important subject when it come to the mater of public health.

PSA: Public Health and Epidemiology on Vision and Eye Care

For this project my partners and I decided to research the epidemiology of Eye care and whether or not it is supported by Public Health. Along with our resources and background knowledge we had an interview with Ms. Rachel Bishop who is an Ophthalmologist and asked her many questions to inform watchers about just how serious eye care is and why it matters in public health.
In the project I did a lot of the research but I wish I was there for the interview. Unfortunately I was busy with the play, but Samuel did a great job asking the questions. I was upset however, that I had to play "Mother" and force my peers to complete their work, but luckily they got the work done.
The most meaningful piece of this project is that everyone who watches will understand the epidemic that is bad eye care and I need everyone to know.

Tobacco PSA

For the last quarter benchmark, me and my group were tasked with creating a PSA video about a public health issue. Me and my group were tasked with the Tobacco industry and how do we combat this epidemic. In the video we talk about the how Tobacco affects the body, how addictive the substance is and how the physical tobacco entices consumers to buy it, among other things. During the project we discovered various things among them the fact that the tobacco industry is a largely negative industry since it causes problems to the general public either through the consumption of tobacco, product of which causes bad health problems and how it impacts other industries economically. The purpose of the video was to educate the public of the problem that is Tobacco and the Tobacco industry and give a professional outlook of the problem through interviews that we did and showed.

PSA: Food Safety

Food safety is a subject that impacts all of us. Recently there have been a number of bacterial outbreaks that have threatened our public health. Factors that play a big part in these outbreaks are lack of prevention control, hand washing, proper sanitation, following rules and regulations provided by FDA and FSMA and regulatory agencies such as the CDC and OSHA enforcing fines on corporations who do not implement food safety that were put in place to protect the public from outbreaks. The way that I contributed to this project is by researching and sharing my opinions and ideas in our PSA. I also conducted the interview. I think what I would have wanted to do differently was spend more time finding more people  to interview for more perspectives on the issue. Food safety issues have recently just been taken more seriously. researched has been stumped due to lack of money from the government to take care of the issue. The FDA has been finding more money to get technology that will benefit out mission on protecting our public health. The most meaningful part of this PSA was learning and getting to share what I learned to help our society come together for a cause that will in some way affect all of us.
